Our frequently focused upon entry in the Final Fantasy series takes center stage today.

Story

Humanity planned to build a new age upon the essential resource of “Mako Energy.” The Shinra Company built a monopoly with this lifeblood of the Planet, gripping the world in a cultural hegemony. The wanna-be Ex-SOLDIER Cloud, while apathetic to the Planet’s plight, still joined the Anti-Shinra Organization “AVALANCHE.” Then he met Aerith, a descendant of the Ancients, and a new threat to Planet materialized when Cloud’s old enemy Sephiroth was revived. Cloud and his companions chase after Sephiroth, taking the first steps in their journey to save the Planet.

Sephiroth

Easily wielding a katana taller than himself, this legendary SOLDIER makes use of that reach with each shining attack of his exceptionally fast sword as he overwhelms his opponents. On his world, this old enemy of Cloud’s is a former SOLDIER 1st Class. Created by the Jenova Project, he would summon the ultimate destructive magic of Meteor to create a swell of the Planet’s energy that he could absorb in order to become a god.

Cloud Strife

A swordsman with sharp, shining blue eyes. He wields a sword as big as himself with enough destructive power to knock his opponent away. On his world, he lent his skills to the Anti-Shinra Organization “AVALANCHE,” joining his future companions on their journey to protect the planet. He chased after his fated rival Sephiroth, the legendary SOLDIER he admired until the man burned his hometown to ashes.

Today we cover the characters of classic FFVI.

Story

One thousand years after the “War of the Magi” when the world was almost burned to ash… Reawakening the lost art of magic via infusion, the Gestahlian Empire built itself upon the conquest of the rest of the world. To this end the Empire sent out Terra – a young woman controlled by a Slave Crown – to capture an Esper as a part of its invasion of the mining town of Narshe. By chance, Terra was able to escape from the Empire’s subjugation when Locke, a member of the Anti-Imperial Returners, found her in the Narshe mines. Soon enough, the power of Magitek would engulf the world in a war that would decide its very existence…

Kefka Palazzo

A cruel Magitek Warrior whose mind was thrown into madness. He mainly attacks via magic with erratic motions, reveling in laughing at his opponent the whole while. On his world, he had been trusted with leading the Gestahlian Empire’s Magitek corps, and led it on the front line against the Returners and anyone else who opposed them. Drawing upon the powers of Magitek and the Espers, he was able to drive the world into ruin during his reign as a God.

Terra Branford

A young woman who wields the power of magic. She possesses the twin powers of a mage and an Esper. When attacking, she mainly uses magic, allowing her to attack at both close and long range. On her world, she was born with the natural ability to use magic, and for this reason she was enslaved by the Gestahlian Empire. While in the mining town of Narshe, she was able to communicate with an Esper and sever the Empire’s hold on her, and after being rescued by Locke of the Anti-Imperial Returners, she took her place in the war to decide the fate of the world.

Our countdown continues today with the protagonist and antagonist of FFV.

Story

A world blessed by four Crystals…
The people considered the Crystals’ gifts to be simply a common part of their everyday lives. But then, one day the Wind Crystal shattered as all of its power had been used up. In the midst of his wandering travels, Bartz banded together with Princess Lenna on her quest to protect the remaining Crystals from the forces of evil. Along their journey, they discovered the truth behind the hidden mysteries of their world.

Exdeath

An evil warlock who wields the all-consuming power of nothingness, referred to as “The Void.” While he moves slowly, movement has no affect on how wide the range of his magic extends. On his world, he was bound to the four crystals and was revived when they shattered. He fought against both sets of Light Warriors to obtain the complete dominion over “The Void,” only to be utterly consumed by the very power he sought.

Bartz Klauser

A young man possessing a strong sense of justice and a gallant heart. This talented fighter utilizes a combination of techniques from his fellow Warriors of Cosmos in battle. On his world, as he was traveling together with his chocobo Boko to fulfill his father’s dying wish, he unexpectedly came upon Princess Leena at the sight of a meteor crash, and decided to join her on her journey to save the Crystals.

Moving along with our countdown with our first set of brothers.

Story

The two moons floating around the blue planet…
The militaristic nation of Baron suddenly started to plunder the crystals from the nations they blessed. Cecil, the captain of the Airship Unit “The Red Wings,” brought his doubts before the cruel king, but the only answer he received was the order to wipe out a village of summoners with his friend Kain. But at the time, the two did not know what roles they would play in the coming war that would decide the fate of the blue planet and its moons.

Golbez

A man clad in dark armor and priding himself on powerful magic. Even when wearing such heavy armor, he is still quite agile. On his world, he manipulated the kingdom of Baron to gather the Crystals, and when Cecil left the kingdom he assumed command of the Red Wings to lead them in war against other nations. The four Archfiends of Earth, Water, Fire, and Wind served as his subordinates, attacking Cecil in his stead while he focused on the Crystals.

Cecil Harvey (Dark Knight)

Possessing the power of darkness, Cecil can assume the role of a Dark Knight. He prides himself on ground combat, wielding devastatingly powerful attacks. On his world, he commanded “The Red Wings,” Baron’s Airship Unit, but being forced to follow the king’s unreasonable commands caused him a great deal of anguish. To redeem himself from the cursed power of darkness, Cecil traveled to Mt. Ordeals.

Cecil Harvey (Paladin)

Now a holy warrior, this is Cecil in the role of a Paladin. He prides himself on aerial combat, nimbly bounding in the air with his magnificent sword play. On his world, he redeemed himself from the cursed power of darkness by climbing Mt. Ordeals, surmounting the trial to be awarded with the title of “Paladin.”

Finishing up the original NES games with this set FFIII profiles

Story

The Crystals granted their divine protection to the World of Light… But as powerful earthquakes began to plague the land and the four Crystals deep in the bowels of the earth, the World of Darkness started to overtake their light. Four youths from the far off village of Ur found their way into a curious cave while playing, and there the Wind Crystal selected them to be the Warriors of Light. From there they started their harsh journey in the life or death war between the Worlds of Light and Darkness.

Cloud of Darkness

A being who exists to return all to nothing in order to reset the balance between light and dark. She is able to fly and can use the tentacles attached to her body to attack. On her world, when the sorcerer Xande caused darkness to flood the world, she was revived from her 1000 year slumber. As she was poised to erase everything, the Warriors of Light made a stand against her.

Onion Knight

A young man who possesses the title of Onion Knight. Although he is small, he runs about nimbly and liberally uses his sword and magic. On his world, while playing around in the ruins of the Crystal’s temple, he and his friends fell into a hole caused by an earthquake and they wandered the caverns until they came to the Crystal’s alter, where the Wind Crystal presented them with the mission of becoming the Warriors of Light.

Dissidia Famitsu Reviews

Posted on December 10th, 2008 at 8:41 PM by Schala-Kitty

The scores for Dissidia appeared in this week’s Famitsu. The game garnered a 36 out of 40, won a Plantinum award and was the top pick of the week. I’ve gone through and translated the reviews so we can read these professional opinions for ourselves.

フランソワ林 – Score: 10, nominated it for “Best Picks of this Week”

With a number of distinguished characters appearing together, it is not a mere party, but plays out like a expertly told story. The prerendered movies are first-rate. The pillar of the game is how easy controls and consistent learning curve meld together with “captivating” action. Like most FF games there is an abundance of customization, all finely detailed. The only issue is that it can occasionally feel hard to understand what is going on around you.

メルヘン須藤 – Score: 9, nominated it for “Best Picks of this Week”

With speedy battles, this game of fast pursuits and balancing offense and defense is hot. It’s difficult to completely master the characters, especially as enemies become more formidable as your level goes higher. Its fascinating how there are an infinite amount of ways to customize. This is really handheld gaming at its peak. Regarding the story itself though, my opinion of that isn’t quite the same.

奥村キスコ – Score: 9, nominated it for “Best Picks of this Week”

Able to produce battles that look like scenes out of Advent Children, the simple controls make it easy to enjoy. But, it doesn’t end there, as an exacting history and story have also been woven into this game! If you do as I did while playing, I’m sure you’ll relish all the special effects and take your hat off to the overflowing amount of little tricks you use. This will positively reward all of the fan speculation (hype).

ローリング内 – Score: 8

The ability to steal your opponent’s “Attack Power” (Brave) through your attacks is a unique addition, as is the novel gameboard style over-world map used in this game. Because of the number of technical terms, even when you play through the tutorial understanding it all can still be a problem. The battles are refreshing, and the character customization keeps some of the RPG feel.

10 Days to Dissidia – II

Posted on December 9th, 2008 at 10:52 PM by Schala-Kitty

Continuing with our countdown from yesterday…

Story

Once upon a time, on a far away world… The Emperor of the Palamecian Empire shattered the world’s peace. To sate his desire for world conquest, the Emperor called upon monsters from the very depths of Hell. A rebel army rose up in the Kingdom of Fynn to stand against the Emperor, of which Firion became a member when he was dragged into the war by the loss of his adopted family. Soon enough, he and his companions were all soldiers of the Wild Rose Rebellion, dedicating themselves to the overthrow of the Emperor.

The Emperor

A man who wields terrible magic and manipulates powerful arcane forces. He has a cool-headed demeanor, fitting for one who believes the ends justify the means. On his world, he planned to conquer the world as the leader of the militaristic Palamecian Empire. He held the people of the world in fear of the powerful demon army he summoned from Hell.

Firion

The sword, the spear, the bow, the knife, the staff; only a sampling of the weapons this young man has mastered. He possesses a strong sense of justice, and an equally passionate soul. On his world, he hails from the kingdom of Fynn. When the kingdom was sieged by the Palamecian Empire, his adoptive parents were killed in the attack and he almost died as well. After he and his friends were saved by the Wild Rose Rebellion, they decided to dedicate themselves to the cause.

10 Days to Dissidia – I

Posted on December 8th, 2008 at 11:22 PM by Schala-Kitty

With only ten days until Dissidia’s release date in Japan, we decided to have a countdown to mark the occasion. Starting with today, we will be posting translations of the character profiles from the official website with one game per day. Today, we start at the beginning with Final Fantasy I.

Story

Earth, fire, water, and wind. These four crystals have supported the whole of the world. However, the hand of Chaos has caused the crystals to lose their radiance, covering the world in darkness, causing its continual decay. Before long, four warriors carrying the prophesied crystals appear in the land of Cornelia. With no memories of their past, and no understanding of the purpose of the crystals they possess, they set out on a great journey to restore the radiance of the crystals, and bring peace to the world once again.

Garland

He bears a great sword that he can transform into a highly destructive battle axe, both of which he wields with two hands as he fights in ever-changing patterns. On his world, he stood in opposition against the warriors of light. Although he used to be a famous knight, one day he suddenly kidnapped Princess Sara and shut himself within the Chaos Shrine.

Warrior of Light

A warrior who excels at swordplay. He is also exceedingly talented at balancing his offense with the defensive use of his shield. On his world, after rescuing Princess Sara of the Kingdom of Cornelia, he set out on the journey to save a world covered in darkness.

Dissidia Site Update – Story Mode Video and Custom PSP Themes

Posted on December 5th, 2008 at 12:10 AM by Schala-Kitty

The Official Dissidia Website was updated recently with a new video tutorial showing the basics of Story Mode.

The main topics covered are the use of Destiny Points (DP) to move one’s Player Piece across the Game Board, entering into battles – which gives us our first look at the random enemies in the game, opening up chests on the field, and finally fighting the stage boss. Of note is that the official map name for the pedestal we have seen the heroes gathering on in the trailers is “Order’s Sanctum.”

In the Downloads section on the official site, you can find official Dissidia custom themes for your PSP, featuring characters from FFI, FFII, and FFIII.
