Our member curiousACfan has once again contributed his skill at translating some of the Dissidia Final Fantasy Ultimania. “Link to the Original: Final Fantasy II” is done so enjoy reading up on the “Wild Rose” of Final Fantasy!

The tale which first expanded character drama was FFII. Many memorable lines from it appear in Dissidia FF.

Firion’s pose of holding his sword in front of his eyes

When Firion confronts the Emperor in Destiny Odyssey II-5, he holds his sword horizontally in front of his eyes. This pose is identical to his pose in the illustration on the packaging of the Famicom edition of FFII.

At the start of battles, Firion briefly takes up a similar pose. This could be called Firon’s “kime” pose.

(Note: “Kime” is a Japanese martial arts term. It refers to a pose one strikes in order to focus their mental and physical power.)

A young man who is inexperienced with women

When acquiring the summon stone for Shiva AUTO in Destiny Odyssey II-3, the conversation is a parody of the scene in FFII with the Lamia Queen. The creature had taken on the form of Hilda, princess of the Kingdom of Fynn, and beguiled Firion.

Shiva’s lines are based on the lines of the fake princess in FFII.

The roots of Firion’s “wild rose” dream

In Dissidia FF, Firion carries a wild rose that is very important to him; it is his dream, and the password of the rebellion Firion belonged to in FFII. It was derived from the crest of the Kingdom of Fynn, which lead the rebel army, and is used in conversation with comrades of the army.

The thoughts behind Firion’s words

In Destiny Odyssey II-5, Firion says, “Someday, for sure!” about his dream. This is the same line Firion says in the ending of FFII to Leon, his friend since childhood, as he’s leaving.

(Note: This was translated in the English PlayStation release as “We shall meet again, Leon!” and in the GBA release as “When the time is right… we’ll be waiting.“)

The comments in front of the treasure chest

When opening a treasure chest in Destiny Odyssey II-1, Tidus wonders if it’s safe, and Firion says, “Why wouldn’t it be okay!?” He said this line in FFII just before receiving a ride on Leila’s pirate ship, such language demonstrating his gullibility.

(Note: In addition to referencing the comical moment in FFII, this scene also seems to be an in-joke to the “monster-in-a-box” enemies that first appeared in FFII and then throughout the FF series.)

Resurrected from Hell, the last words of the Emperor

In Shade Impulse C2-5, some of the Emperor’s final words are “Unbelievable… Defeated by… insects like you… not once, but twice! Who… are… you?“, the same as his last lines in FFII. Unable to believe his own defeat, the Emperor asked Firion’s party this.

Not done yet! More links to FFII

•In Destiny Odyssey II-4, Firion mutters “During the course of war, there are many who lose their lives,” as he had several comrades who sacrificed themselves in FFII.

•In Shade Impulse C2-1, the Emperor’s line “I have returned from hell” is derived from when he returned from hell in FFII.

•Battle setup assistant Gordon says “I’m just a spineless coward. Go ahead, laugh. I deserve it” and “How brave you are! I on the other hand …“, each of these lines being from FFII.

•Battle setup assistant Minwu says “You can gain benefits from fighting with comrades” referring to the FFII strategy of attacking comrades to raise their maximum HP.

Battle Voice Pick Up

Your looks will not deceive me!
―Firion:When fighting Ultimecia
LINK:In FFII, Firion was successfully fooled by the Lamia Queen who turned into Princess Hilda. Has bitter experience been a good teacher?

This world can have but one emperor!
―The Emperor:When fighting the Emperor
LINK:In FFII, he said these words to Leon, who had declared himself the new emperor. He also says this line in Shade Impulse C2-5.

I will not… die…
―The Emperor:At defeat
LINK:When he fought Firion’s party for the first time in FFII, he said this line after being defeated.

Uboar!
―The Emperor:When receiving a finishing blow

It is definitively the coolest death cry of any FF character. Ever.

Kenyu Horiuchi does such a magnificent job of “UBOOAAA.” It’s so cheesy, but he sounds so awesome doing it in SI C2-5

also, there is an obvious reference to the only suber wepon against the emperor, when firon goes into ex mode, he gets the blood wepons, in ff2, the blood sword was the only wepon effective against the emperors final form (in main story, not re-birth)
