Sonic the Hedgehog

Taxman proof of concept for Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Oh lawdy

It's the same kind of port as Sonic 1 and 2 for iOS/Android. But SEGA haven't officially backed it yet. i.e. it's in widescreen and has all sorts of extra shit

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD SEGA DO IT

Also I need them to then release all of these on PSN. I can't stand playing on my phone. I just can't. The only Taxman release that's available on PSN is Sonic CD, and that's my least favourite of all the classic sonic games by an absolute mile.

I honestly don't know! It's never been on PSN, like not even it once was and they took it off. It was just never on there.

What's more confusing is that the company who ported one and two - "SEGA Vintage Collection" is the same company that released S3 and S&K on the XBox 360. Bear in mind they've been on XBox since like... 2010/11. So this makes literally no sense.

Into the bargain, what this means is that there is no version of Sonic 3 and Knuckles available at all for the PS3. The XBLA versions - if you buy both - have a "bonus content" feature that allows you play them together as though Sonic 3 was sitting in the S&K lock-on cartridge.

None of the disc-based Sega Mega Drive/ Genesis iterations for the PS3 offer this feature. Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles are on these compilation things (such as Sonic's Ultimate Mega Drive/ Genesis Colletion), but you can't play both together.

I honestly have no clue why it's not on the PSN. I've been moaning about it for a really long time.

Anyone tried the Boom demo on 3ds? It's actually pretty good, but it's a bit slow. It's limited to 8 plays, so get your fill while you can :p

As horrible/weird the new designs are, it's actually fun to play xD

I'm still holding out for that 2015 multiplatform title that was hinted at a while back now that their dumbass 3 exclusive Nintendo sonic games thing is fulfilled.

Also hey this is pretty cool

I played through Sonic 3 and Knuckles again yesterday. I always forget how ridiculously hard some of the stages in that game are. Namely Carnival Night Act 2, Sandopolis Act 2 (THE HORROR), and uh... I had a lot of trouble with another one but I don't remember which one it was.

Also have the urge to replay Sonic 2006, which is just bizarre considering I know how much of a train wreck that game is.

EDIT: Oh hey this one is pretty cool too

There's a huge Sonic sale on PSN right now. Last night I bought Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and Unleashed. Haven't played the SA games in years, and I was always intrigued by the speed levels in Unleashed.

The Sonic Adventure 2 port is brilliant - it's in actual widescreen and everything looks really good. It's essentially an HD-Remaster.

Sonic Adventure 1, not so much. But I'm one of those weirdos that prefers SA2 so I don't really care.

(I prefer SA2 as well. But it's been EXTRA long since I've played the first one. I'm glad to know that 2 looks so good though.

I do despise those Knuckles/Rouge levels though...)

Orah, Iju
i knew this boom game would be off-the-charts bad XD

do you know that even the most brainwashed of sonic fans are calling this "Sonic 14", and heralding sonic 06 as tons better?

i bet sonic not being at the parade this year has nooooothing to do with this failure.

*facepalm*

SONIC.
ADVENTURE.

Sonic Boom honestly isn't that bad, I've seen a lot of it. It's not very sonic-like but it looks like an OK platformer. Reviewers are simply saying it's boring.

Sonic Adventure 3? You must mean nottu gonna happenu.

I like the Adventure games (2 far more than 1) but they're not the be-all-end-all some fans make them out to be.

I liked Adventure 1 back when it came out. Went back to it years later and thought it had aged horribly.
SA2 I played for the first time about 2 or 3 years ago. Found it quite bad from the start. =/

I played Adventure a year or two ago. It was cute. I might get SA2 now that it is on sale.

So I played a bit of SA2 last night.

Me: Oh, City Escape us the first level? This will be fun! *hits every car in the street*

So I think we can all agree that this franchise is in serious trouble now, because those last two games did abysmally and everywhere you look there are articles like "Sonic the Hedgehog needs to die" and other such stuff.

Who cares though really? And that's the problem XD. It still has its super active fan community, so here's a couple of things I found.

Interviews with the Sonic 3 and Knuckles remastered for smartphones (I wish they would release these on consoles) one is here, the other is here.

Also here's an article about a fan port of a game they never released.

Don't die Sonic, some of us still love you ;-;

I understand that and how they lost their way in the mid-2000s...but I really don't see how they screwed the pooch after that string of games where each was better than the last. From Unleashed and 4 I and II to Colo(u)rs to Generations it really looked like they had legitimately figured it out. The games at the beginning of that chain, while not great had elements of the old mojo and each one saw marked improvements. It looked like whatever changes they had made to Sonic Team were paying dividends and they knew where they were going. Even Sonic Racing Transformed, if you want to count it, was one of the best kart racers in a long, long time.

What happened? With the Sonic Boom thing it seems like Sega did what they ALWAYS do. Change things as soon as they have a formula that works. Why?! Take what you accomplished in Generations and merge that with 4 to make 5. Or, hell, Generations was BEGGING to be a DLC whore of a game. I would have bought any classic level they redid in classic and modern immediately. Star Light Zone, Flying Battery Zone, Mystic Cave Zone. Come on!

And, no, I don't think it should die and I freaking hate those articles. Given to a new team, fine (or the last team? Did they change before Lost World? I don't know, but when you have a franchise that means something to legions of people, it would be stupid to kill it. Get it right, by all means, figure it out. But the flashes of brilliance still tells me that somewhere, someone understands what makes Sonic games good.

And, yeah, why the hell is S3&K not on freaking PSN already, you assholes.

This quote:
I think it's a shame that many of unique game mechanics and iconography (Art Deco fonts, geometric inspired patterns) that gave the original Sonic series a strong identity were tossed out in order to make the game more "Western".

I agree with that. Usually that kind of stuff only makes occasional appearances in Sonic games nowadays as a mere reference. "Oh look here, retro-stage!"

They were supposed to be releasing another big console game (as in, for PS4 and that other one that isn't the Wii U) this year, but there's yet to be any news of it whatsoever. I know Sega had 300 staff layoffs last year, there was some major reshuffling in the business.

They're still super dodgy about S3&K and they won't tell anyone why (even though everyone knows it's the music and Michael Jackson's estate). They were involved in some sort of law suit following the release in 2011 of S3&K on Steam and no ports have been released of it since. The proof of concept demo released by Taxman last year is still just a demo because Sega haven't green lit it even though there's a fan campaign.

F2P mobile Sonic games continue to be released. That's the state of things right now. I'd like to know what happened to that PS4 title they were going to release this year.

Sega should ditch their lame cast and make games with stories closer to SatAM. Maybe even the comics? Even though I've never read them.

I don't know why the Michael Jackson thing would be an issue anyway, given that he wasn't pleased with it and walked away, uncredited. How would his estate have any claim to it?

It's got to be that, it can't be anything else. Literally there is nothing else about the game that would cause the shirty behaviour around re-releases, since it's absent from most of the compilations they've released, and in a couple of instances they've released the game with different music.

There's also this song by 1980's band The Jetzons. Sound familiar?
