Translations from recent Famitsu scans

Schalla Kitty, in her Dissidia-related blog, FFchaoticcosmos, has posted some translations from the recent Famitsu scans, including some info about Cloud and Sephiroth. Here you go:

Cloud Strife

"With this blue-eyed SOLDIER, our concept was 'Smash and Blow.' Many of his attacks are designed to knock the opponent back, gaining additional damage from slamming them into walls, however this makes him a little quirky in aerial combat."

Cloud's attacks include standards such as Cross-Slash and Meteorain in addition to his EX-Burst of Omnislash. His EX-Mode is switching from the Buster Sword to the Ultima Weapon.

Sephiroth

"A SOLDIER possessing overwhelming power, who planned to absorb the Planet's Energy. His concept is that of a 'Blade Master.' He cuts with a 'sword that can't be seen.' This high speed sword technique is his key feature. Many portions of the fighting arenas will show damage after his attacks, making this 'sword that can't be seen' really interesting."

Sephiroth's attacks include Octaslash from Crisis Core (here with it's much better Japanese name of Eight Flashing Blades), and his iconic downward stabbing attack that took the life of Aeirth is now referred to as "The Prison Gate." His EX-Mode will be his One-Winged Angel from from Advent Children, and his EX-Burst is Super Nova.

As for the rest:

Game Boards

Not too much to mention about the game boards that we don't already know. The official name for the character on the board is a "Player Piece." Dialogue will occur on the boards as we have seen - I couldn't come up with exact translations but the conversation between Tidus and Firion is about fighting against Jecht, Firion saying that he is only concerned with fighting against Chaos and for Tidus not to take offense if that includes Jecht. The one between Tidus and Cloud is about swords. Of particular note is the appearance of what can only be a Cosmos Boss Piece on Cloud's board. This further supports that there will be some level of same-side infighting, though how malicious it will be remains to be seen.

Story Scenes

Two scenes include our newest characters and here at the lines shown -

With Golbez and Sephiroth - Golbez: I need someone who will not be burned when approaching the light. (This seems to be building upon the scene between them in the trailer.)

With Tidus, Firion, Cecil and Cloud - Cloud: Fighting recklessly would be dangerous when we don't even know what's going on.

Another Costume

Just the very clear note that Terra's alternate version will be "Green-haired Terra."

Online Features

So our first taste of what some of the online features will be. You will be able to enter the Online Lobby and customize a Friend Card to go with your profile. You can exchange "Ghosts" with your friends - these will be AI files programed to mimic your fighting style. It seems that you can unlock certain items by defeating these Ghosts, but it wasn't 100% clear to me. You can also fight against your friends, setting up the characters you will play, the rules of the match, and the fighting arena - with 25 to choose from. We've only seen 12 arenas thus far, so it will be interesting to see the other 13.

This is actually Sephiroth's line, saying rather:

"Careful not to get burnt as you get too close the light."

Edit; It's not really fair to just say that and not explain myself. The caption of the screenshot says it's Sephiroth giving a warning to Golbeza. As for the line itself, there's nothing that really says anything about need anything.

??????????????????????
Light [to] - get close - [particle showing that the extent of the previous action is so great it causes the following] - that [= your] person - to not be burnt - [contruction giving a roundabout warning or order].

Thanks for clearing that up! :)

I wonder what is this "light" Golbez and Sephiroth are referring to. I think that, based in Cosmos' words in the latest trailer...

Cosmos: The ten of you...
Cosmos: You are my last hope in this world.
Cosmos: Please, you must obtain them...
Cosmos: The lights that would shine even if this world was torn asunder...
Cosmos: The Crystals

...that they may be referring to the Crystals. Given that, in FFIV, Golbez's goal was to gather all the Crystals, this is most likely the case.

However, they may also be referring to Cecil, who ceased to be a Dark Knight to become a Paladin, in a way abandoning tha darkness and embracing the Light. But since Cecil, in Dissidia, can be either a Dark Knight or a Paladin, this is a bit unlikely.

Edit (28.11.2008): Dengeki Magazine published a four page interview with Dissidia staff.

Schalla-Kitty posted in her Dissidia-related blog, FFchaoticcosmos, translations of the highlights of the interview.

Here they are:

"Tidus refers to Firion as 'Wild Rose,'"

"When you press the start button, various 2D and 3D characters will explain the menu."

"The Tonberry summon is a must-see when using Jecht, who can combo with it if you time the button input right."

"If you look at the top of the screen you can see the affects your accessories have, with various icons to indicate the conditions."

"Firion uses all 8 of the weapon types from his original game, including bare-handed fighting. The Onion Knight's attacks automatically switch up during Ex-Mode."

"Kuja can activate two seperate combos depending upon how the analog stick is used, and while in Ex-Mode he is surrounded by a ring of magic that protects him as he moves and jumps."

"One gimmick of the game is that the Brave Pool can be affected by the stages."

"Jecht uses no magic and brawls instead, while a character like Golbez has a control scheme more like what you would expect of a boss character."

"We made Cloud really easy to use since he's popular. We took a lot of time on him, right up until the end."

A good portion of the rest of the interview covered the concepts for the 20 characters.

"Bartz: To differentiate him from the Onion Knight, we went came to the decision to make him an FFV-style "Mime."

"Terra: She is the easiest magic user to play with. You only have to balance the distance with her attacks."

"Jecht: His attacks are pulled from several types of fighting. If you execute the combos with perfect timing, you can eliminate his pauses between attacks."

"Ex-Death: He moves slow since he's a tree (laughs). But you can compensate for his movement. Unique amongst the characters, he can counter-attack an opponent if he guards against their attacks. He's a character that requires a lot of practice. But if you mastered him would he be invincible?"

"Gobez: We went to great lengths with his concept. In his Ex-Mode, we were wanted the reference with the Shadow Dragon."

"Tidus: Tidus was the only character who from the beginning we knew would have the addition of dodging. Still though, the Staff debated the pros and cons of this concept a great deal.

"Emperor: He leaves a trail of mines and magic behind as he traverses the stage. Since he gradually whittles away at his opponent indirectly, he is a tough character to use."

"Firion: He uses all of the equipment from the original game. Another unique feature is that he remains stationary when attacking. Firion and the Emperor share the same home stage of Pandemonium."

"Sephiroth: As another popular character like Cloud, we wanted him to be easy to use. However, he requires a more professional touch. His sword has a long reach which can be used to great advantage."
