Unused FFVII scene discovered! Palmer was in the Honey Bee Inn!

by May 3, 2011 0 comments

Fourteen years after the game’s release it still sports new surprises. This time the secret is exclusive to the first Japanese release (January 31st, 1997) and can be found in the unused Honey Bee Inn lobby.
Tweaking with the game will cause the Shinra Manager, a lovingly remembered peripheral character, to appear at the receptionist’s desk. Talking to the manager three times will trigger an unused scene.

The music that replaces the default Honey Bee Inn theme is not used anywhere else in the entire game. It was previously unearthed from the PC version where its file name reads as “Comical.mid”. FF7citadel made this unused track famous and now after all these years we finally know where the music was intended. We also at last get to hear the tune in its true, intended PlayStation sound format.

Translations are yet to be provided but anyone with knowledge of the Japanese language will notice that much of the dialogue reads as jibberish. The game displays the wrong kanji and guessing the correct characters is a matter that is still being researched by GlitterBerri, one of our translators.

Even without a translation the jist of the scene is, fortunately, not lost upon the viewer. Palmer has obviously been having fun at the Honey Bee Inn and for whatever reason he does not approve of the Shinra Manager’s presence.

Edit: Translation summary by Annachuu.
“What I could make out was that Palmer was having fun at the Honey Bee Inn, and when he asked (incredulously) what the manager was doing there, the manager replied that “he was there for marketing purposes”, in which backfired when one of the Honey Bee ladies implied that the manager was a regular there, esp with said lady. What’s more, that very Honey Bee lady happened to be Palmer’s “honey” and Palmer was obviously not very happy about this and chased the manager.”

Anyone wanting to unlock the scene themselves simply have to read the video’s description in YouTube to find the required cheat codes. Remember, this unused lobby can only be visited in the first Japanese release so FFVII International will not work here.

Expect TLS to cover more unused Final Fantasy VII content in the future.

Not all of the Japanese was gibberish though. It is possible the developers intended one of them to be Tifa, but if so then they failed because none has Tifa’s red eyes. More details will be revealed in the upcoming Honey Bee Inn article, which is nearing completion.
