Wooo…ow!! Thank you guys so much, the unused text articles make me feel like, just for a moment, I’m back playing new parts of FF7. It’s magical! ♥

This is such a memorable part of FF7 even pared down as much as it is in the final game, and seeing how much bigger and more drawn out it could have been is hilarious– A lot of time and effort put into this place. Amazing.

    Thanks again!

We can’t really tell whether time was a direct factor: cutting things short in such a way that they look dramatically different, and still have to make sense in the context of the game, would also take a nontrivial amount of time. Given how much got implemented and then cut, I’m guessing project management was too compartmentalised: Toriyama got handed the HBI events, nobody else checked the script until the scenes were substantially implemented, then there’s a team meeting at which the others finally look at each other’s work and sudden you-can’t-do-thattery ensues…

Your comment is wise and I will edit that section of the article to fit your input. I feel honored that you read these articles and that you can add your thoughts to them. If I recall, it was you who explained to GlitterBerri why the kanji was messed up in the first place. Thank you. =)

@Shademp Thanks for the compliments. I’m impressed by how much more you and your colleagues have worked out since I was investigating this stuff.

This was a fun and interesting read. Thanks for sharing.

But I’m wondering though, what does it mean to call all of this information “unused text”? does it mean that it was Japanese paragraphs/sentences not included in the English translation?

    Thanks for any help.

“Unused Text” qualifies as any piece of text which can’t be triggered in a normal playthrough of the game. If it requires cheat codes, modding or any other extra tool, then it counts as unused.

      @evan
I’m glad so many people appreciate our work.

I *want* Part 5 to arrive soon, but I can’t make any estimates I’m afraid. Good things come to those who wait. =)

I am making edits to past articles and I’ve just finished editing this one. All edits will be listed in the “Cut Scenes and Unused Text” thread, if you want to make sure that you don’t miss out on anything.

Two sections in the article have now been edited. First, Myst6re reminded me that each map has a back and a front layer. This did not reveal anything about the unseen ONNA_4 design, but I still included links to both layers in that section.
    Back layer: http://iloapp.worldofbits.com/data/_gallery//public/22/1318423616_resized.png
    Front layer: http://iloapp.worldofbits.com/data/_gallery//public/22/1318423618_resized.png

Also finally edited the summary. Removed the part about time being an issue, and instead transitioned to Robert Seddon’s observation, which is now quoted in the summary.

I am in the process of editing my past articles. All the edits will be listed in the “Cut Scenes and Unused Text” thread, soon enough.

I apologize for pulling a George Lucas, but our knowledge has grown since the start of this series and I do not wish for the articles to become outdated.

I just finished reading the entirety of the article and WOW, that was an extremely entertaining and fascinatingly informative read.

It’s a bummer that so much was decided to be cut from the final release, especially since I really like the older and unreleased versions of Honey Bee Inn more than the finished product. Some of those scenes were hilarious and others were very engaging (they remind of the hilarity of the cut scenes from Thousand Arms)!

So much hard collaborative work went into this game and into this article! Thank you so much for your hard work and for making this series! Keep it up! Thanks!!

Great, detailed work, thank you very much for the effort you’ve been putting into this!

At some point (when talking about the reconstruction of layers of the field) it looked like an archaeology project. And if you think about it, it is in a way.

Also that bit of info about Toriyama’s idea (the combining of the avalanche trio) had me laughing for 5 mins, genius 😀
