What if Final Fantasy Games had Unique Titles

This is an idea I thought of awhile back, but back then it was a bit half-baked. I started imagining titles for each Final Fantasy game if they all had unique names based on the core of their themes and stories instead of all just being numerical titles.


Here's what I came up with:

Final Fantasy – “Legend of the Warriors of Light” or “Legend of the Four Crystals”

Final Fantasy II – “Dark Shadow Over Palamecia” (the name of the original English prototype)

Final Fantasy III – “The World of Darkness and the Heroes of Light”

Final Fantasy IV – “Journey of the Dark Knight”

Final Fantasy V – “Legacy of the Four Heroes”

Final Fantasy VI – “The Magicite War”

Final Fantasy VII – “The Lifestream Crisis”

Final Fantasy VIII – “Legacy of the Sorceress” or "Legacy of the Witch"

Final Fantasy IX – “Fantasy Gaiden: Melodies of Life”

Final Fantasy X – “The High Summoner of Spira” or "The Legend of Zanarkand"

Final Fantasy XI – “The Crystal War”

Final Fantasy XII – “The Siege of Dalmasca”

Final Fantasy XIII – “Trials of the l’Cie”

Final Fantasy XIV – I mean, “A Realm Reborn” kinda already has this one covered pretty well I’d say. Curious about a potential title for 1.0 though...

Final Fantasy XV – “The Last King”

Final Fantasy XVI – “The Legend of Dominants” or “The Legend of Ifrit”

FFVII was the hardest one by far. God, there’s so many twists that any name that would work for Act I would have little to no relevance for Acts II and III and vice versa. So it has to be vague enough to work at any time, but still have oomf enough to move units.

Oh, I know VII is one of the hardest to come up with. This whole idea started with that in fact. I was thinking about how the whole series is just different games with common details anyway, so I was trying to think of an alternate title to FFVII if it was a standalone. It's so tricky to think of anything beyond "Crisis of the Planet" or "The Lifestream Crisis" because how much of a Frankenstein story it is.

FFXII - The Zodiac Age

Oh goddangit I forgot FFXII already had a good subtitle!

The only guiding principle for FFVII I came up with was anything with "Crisis" in the title based on what the spinoffs setup.

I think I like Calamity from the Skies for VII because it would seem to refer to the meteor on the cover when it's actually about the eldritch alien

I suppose "Meteorfall" could also work, though that might spoil the player for what the Meteor on the cover represented.

"The Last of the Ancients" could also potentially work for FFVII

FFX - A Dream's End
FFXII - The Dynasty King
FFXIII - New Tale of The Crystal
FXV - The Return of The True King

I haven't finished all of 'em and couldn't think of a good title for all of them so I leave those empty for now, may edit later. I'm giving this way too much thought but it's kinda fun to come up with these.

Notes:

I: Kind of a joke title with it being synonymous to "First Fantasy"

II-V: Have never finished these and played them so long ago that I feel I don't have a good enough grasp of the themes or the story to come up with a title I like =P

VI: Finished it but for some reason I cannot yet think of a good title idk why this one gives me so much trouble

VII: Really wanted "Life" to be present in the title as it's a prevalent theme as well as being confronted with it being finite; both in Aerith's death and life being literally drained as a resource by both Shinra and Sephiroth. The planet bleeds green blahblah idk if I'm perfectly happy with the title

VIII: Not entirely happy with this one yet...I want "Witch" to be part of the title (I know the English localization goes with "sorceress" but idc) but there really isn't much of a reign here...I just thought it sounded cool

IX: Obvious reference to the line "Love's lost refrain" in "Melodies of Life". Alternatively I wanted to name it "The Song of Life" which I shamelessly stole from Yakuza 6

XI: Never played it. Zero idea about the story or themes. Obviously the expansions already have titles although they are generally of the type I dislike: <Thing>of <fantasy word>, e.g. "Treasures of Aht Urghan" That just sounds boring and corny to me! What even is an Aht Urghan? That just feels bad to even say, it's just syllable vomit. Well, that's just my preference though.

XII: Same as VI. Still thinking!

XIV: The expansions already have titles, so going for the original version here. I'm a fan of the single compound word titles FFXIV mostly uses (which is probably evident from most of my suggestions ) so 1.0 obviously gets one too. 1.0 is tricky because the original version barely had a plot and doesn't even have a proper ending and then the patches introduce the Meteor storyline. "Meteorfall" is a bit too VII so I decided on the title signifying that it is the beginning of the journey, the rise of the Warrior of Light.

XV: I looked it up and apparently there is already mobile game by that title...trademark dispute incoming! Wait, there is apparently an upcoming GoT game by the same title too?! I swear I didn't know about these!

XVI: Alternatively I thought of "Eikon of Sin" which is also my totally rad FF/Doom crossover metal cover band (that only exists in my dreams) Yes, I know what I just said about <something>of<something> titles, there are exceptions to everything, shuddup!

Oooh right! Eikon! That was a word I forgot about when thinking about XVI. imo that would go better in the title than "Dominant". "Eikon of Sin" is a pretty great title honestly. "Legacy of the Eikon" could be another good title

Also, one of the titles I thought of before for FF1 was "Swan Song" as I think that was one of the originally proposed titles for it. That might've been proven wrong though?
