Yeah, that's pretty good advice. A lot of my wins were based on 'controlling the board', maximizing the spots you take and trying to cut your opponent from advancing. Then you can take your time to backfill with more potent cards.

Well, that's pretty much how FFXII is structured. Each 'runup' can be fairly branched within itself but it ultimately connects 2-3 areas in general, 4 maximum. To be fair, you could even argue that the original game is structured this way, till the point you get the airship.
