While on the subject, I've never completed FFI, I got lost early into the game and gave up.

Final Fantasy I, while somewhat linear, does offer some ability to sequence break the story. JasonTandro and Ryushikaze both mention this in the podcast. It's not surprising that you found yourself lost at one point. The clues as to where you are supposed to go are kind of vague. My recommendation might be to take a look at an online FAQ if you decide to play again. At the very least, see if you can locate a resource with maps. The dungeons are pretty straight forward but not having a world map can make traversing from location to location a bit difficult.

Select +B brings up an in game world map in all versions of the game. ADDENDUM: That have a B and a Select Button, that is.

Also, the place you will get lost is basically right after Pravoka because there are a lot of ports and no one tells you anything. This is also where sequence breaks can happen if you blunder into Marsh Cave and get the crown without talking to the elves or the king.

You can get a little lost after giving the dwarves the boom, but there's fewer extraneous ports, and you can easily find crescent lake and get pointed in the direction of the Airship soon after, and the game becomes a lot better about plot threads.

^ What would make findinf your way in the ship so much easier was if you didn't get into enemy encounters on the ocean. That's one thing I found annoying about both FF1 and FF5.
