FFVII Snowboarding Mobile Game - Research Thread

qmLAkhD.jpg

A place to post media and questions about this game that may or may not be lost to time.

To start off with, I found this Japanese site called Mobile ASCII that has an entry on this game.

I find the website name curious since it is a Japanese website yet ASCII stands for "American Standard Code For Information Interchange". Can anybody summarize for me what this website is about?

More important than that, the article on FFVII Snowboarding ends with the following:
※iモード用のQRコードです。

(Google Translate)

* It is a QR code for i-mode.

Is it not so that QR Barcodes like the one above is something that only began with the use of smart phones? My impression is that this barcode supposedly helps you play a modern phone in "i-mode", which is the mobile format that FFVII Snowboarding was presumably played in. So does this site in any way bring us closer to playing this game?

I think qr codes have been used in Japan since the mid-2000s? Since phones have commonly had camera cameras which for Japan has been a while now

So i-mode is apparently...
NTT DoCoMo's i-mode is a mobile internet (as opposed to wireless internet) service popular in Japan.

You'll see references to i-mode both on the official product page and on the official Before Crisis page. On the product page, clicking on オフィシャルサイトへ [Go to the official site] actually leads you to the Before Crisis page where you can find a few references to the Snowboarding game.

An annoying limitation is that despite having downloaded the Before Crisis page, I still can't get clean rips of the screenshots displayed on the page. I'm limited to desktop dumps.

I do not know if FFVII Snowboarding was connected to Before Crisis in any way other than that they used the same mobile internet service, i-mode. What it looks like in the image is that the player name for their record time is "BCFFVII" while their second record has them named "スノボ" [Snowboarding]. If anybody could transcribe all the Japanese text on the site that relates to the Snowboarding game that'd be super swell. ^_^

That was interesting to learn that you could play the Snowboarding game for free if you already had Before Crisis!

The google translations leave me wondering though about the game's network features, if it even had any.

A guide to the 2005 version of FFVII Snowboarding was written by Marcelo X. It is hosted on both GameFAQs and FF7Citadel. I have confirmed the content to be identical between both these uploads.

Marcelo X once hosted a Final Fantasy site called Warmech.net. The site disappeared at some point between December 2007 and February 2008.

Both this site and the Snowboarding FAQ write out his old email address, [email protected], but if you send anything to that mail you'll receive an auto-reply that it couldn't be delivered. This will happen even if you follow the instructions on warmech.net that read "if the subject line does not say WarMECH's Domain then my email blocker will automatically delete your email".

If anybody knows the current email address of Marcelo, please let me know so that I might contact him about rare FFVII media.

WarMECH's domain moved to http://warmech.fantasyworldxd.co.uk/ at one point, but it seems to have died recently.

I'm not sure there's anything useful there, but I just found he wrote up about the PlayOnline Tetra Master cards which are nowhere on the internet so I'm happy :p

I tracked him to here http://z10.invisionfree.com/collector/index.php?showuser=10 which he last visited in 2012. It looks like he has an email set but I assume I need to be registered to get anywhere close to it. He did make this post from 2005 which gives some of his aliases.

And from there I found his youtube account which uploaded some FFXIV videos a year ago although there doesn't seem to be any method of contact besides commenting on his video.

But he has a reddit account and posted once a month ago, but before that a year ago.

There's a name I haven't heard in a while. I remember first learning about the dialogue in FFX-2: International+Last Mission involving Shinra's post-game activities with Rin (related to the Spira-to-FFVII connection Nojima had written) from a translation he did.

As you guys may remember, for many years, there was no official translation of the Last Mission.

Thanks for your detective work JBed! I have now sent a message to Marcelo via reddit. If he doesn't respond soon I'll send an alert to him via YouTube.

At first this link didn't work for me then I realized it'd work in Firefox. :monster:
