Blue, blue...
This is a tough choice, since all FFs have awesome music, but in the end I'm gonna have to go with IX. It has a lot of my favorite FF songs, such as The Darkness of Eternity, Not Alone, The Final Battle, etc.

I'm going with VIII. They pretty much all have phenomenal soundtracks but I see VIII as one of the most diverse and trippy, which I really liked. I probably listen more to tracks from VII, IX and X though.

Yeah, I always loved VIII's music. So many awesome songs: The Extreme(which I prefer to Dancing Mad and One-Winged Angel, tbh), Force Your Way, Liberi Fatali, etc.
I still prefer IX's though.

I have to say I LOVE the PS1 era of FF OSTs... but as cliché as my answer will be... it has to be VII.

Some of them are great. Some of them fit the moments they're played so perfectly. And some... are plain nostalgia.

The FFVII main theme on the overworld... every time I hear it, it gets to me. Every. Single. Time.

And bombing mission is the best "starting theme" ever. I love it.

Me, Lex, Carlie and a few other were discussing this on Skype on Saturday night, whilst playing through IX ofcourse :monster:

Loss of Me, Freya's Theme, Theme of Tantalus are just some of my favorite tracks from the soundtrack.

^ This.

But IX is a close second.
Honourable mentions to X, for both the opening cutscene and that ending theme.

It's VII for me. Tifa's theme, One Winged Angel, Aerith's theme, fighting theme, Como Canyon, Jenova, the main theme.

It's followed closely by IX with Vivi's theme, Zidane's theme, battle theme, Loss of Me, Freya's theme, Song of Memories, Ukele le Chocobo.

I made it no secret VIII's not my favorite FF.... but I still honestly think it has the best soundtrack.

Man with the Machine Gun, The Landing, Liberi Fatali, Find Your Way- ugh this ost is amazing.

VIII or VII, VIII or VII... I love both of them! Think I'm going to go with VIII 'cause my favorite VII OST is Criss Core's not the main game's.

Draw between VI and VII. Like Kirk and Picard, fate and chance, I can never decide.

So I'll go on pure nostalgia, i.e. IV.

The main reason I'm voting for VIII is because I'm trying to be objective about it. I don't think it's my favourite of the bunch - but then again I'm not sure what is. I just think Uematsu was at his peak when he wrote it tbh. It and the games surrounding are the best work he's ever done IMO.

VIII's tracks are more atmospheric/ mood setting than others. It's the only game he composed where the characters don't have specific themes, the music is more about telling the story than having a specific sound for each place/person. I think that's why I think it's better.

I wish I could be objective but I am nostalgia's bitch. It doesn't help that I heard all the soundtracks when they first came out (minus II and III) so I remember everything as mind-blowing and cutting edge.

Back in the day I always thought VIII had a particularly good OST.

What I like about VIII is that it's so atmospheric during many of the parts of the game. And the music is part of what makes it happen. The first disc is really, really good.

FFVIII, or how to make a game guide you through specific missions with no detours without it feeling like a "corridor" (first disc).

^^Lol, I think I played a good couple hours of Triple Triad before even going to Dollet, my juncions were ridiculously good. And yeah, VIII nailed the pacing down. I think it did that by only making it possible to go in one direction, but not limiting how long it took you to get there.

I only really started to appreciate FFVIII (and the other FF musics) the most once I had listened to the classical and piano re-renditions. I mean,
is a song I hardly, if at all, remembered from the game, but the piano rendition really stands out for me / imho.

I should replay FFVIII sometime, I've only played it once and a half or so. Like pretty much all the other FF games, lol :monster:

I have to say, the PS1 era was definitely the best. If I had to pick my 5 10 FF soundtracks, I;d probably go with IV, VII, VIII, IX, and X(not necessarily in that order). Note how three of those were first released on the PS1. So many great songs from those games... Battle 1, Battle With the Four Fiends, Dancing Calcabrina, One-Winged Angel, A Forested Temple, Fight On!, The Man With the Machine Gun, Julia, The Castle, Battle 1, Dark City Treno, Vamo' Alla Flamenco, Zanarkand, Otherworld, Fight With Seymour, etc...

Most of the soundtracks I feel were of good quality in their respective technological contexts, each with both gems and flops. For a non-musician layperson, judgement tends to fall back on the bias of favorite game or nostalgia. Personally, I am partial to VI's composition, as it succeeded, at 16-bit, to convey pretty complex emotions (i.e. Terra's Theme). VII took a very cinematic turn thanks to the new technology, and had better harmony between the scenes and the tracks, though part of that was likely due to the graphical improvements. VIII's track was definitely quite diverse (it's hard to believe Liberi Fatali and The Man With The Machine Gun are from the same game), as was previously mentioned. X had some breathtaking tracks as well, but I should stop before I mention every game in the franchise.
