Nice. I guess SE weren't kidding when they said that Mobius would use Remake assets – Guard Scorpion looks exactly the same. I wonder if we're going to get a drip-feed of assets as they are produced. I kinda hope we don't.

And thanks in advance for the article I see you're about to put up. :salute:

Fixed. It's this annoying thing where you have to make sure to select "Show This Post In Main Slider?" in "Post Custom Settings". I haven't figured out a way to make it default to that. It's on my to-do list.

What's with the "materia" option on the battle menu?

Anyway it's looking great IMO, hopefully we'll see a new trailer soonish.

Materia are these orb sphere thingies people use in the game world to use magic or something. Idk

Just felt like being difficult this morning. :monster:

Thanks for sharing! This is definitely better than nothing.

complainers going on about how it should be a turn based battle system still.
Hand those complainers the New Threat mod and they'll get the FFVII fix they are probably looking for. :monster:

What's with the "materia" option on the battle menu?
Maybe it's to swap which materia you want to have associated with an action button for some quick-spell action? Seems roundabout but I could see that happening. Edit: The option seemingly being greyed out might mean that the option isn't available during an action, or it's a menu limited to outside of battles.

Nomura: "We've wanted to show you something sooner, but this past year was dedicated to getting the look of the command and party member status menus just right."

Sorry, also feeling cynical this morning. :monster:

Those three-stage limit bars kinda look like mist charges from FFXII. Perhaps players will be able to use low-level limit breaks or save up for higher ones?

The UI looks better now, much clearer.

I´m still dissapointed that they´re stickying with command menus for combat, I´d have liked they went with XV´s "menuless" controls (with the command menus being used at most for performing something party related or using items).

So what is that "Triangle Lv1" option? As somebody who can't read, write or speak Japanese I shouldn't even try, but here goes...

Transcription:
烈攻斬り

This reminds me of the Japanese for Cloud's "Cross-slash" limit break:
凶斬り

ghrIL08.png

With Cloud spelling out the character "凶" when he executes Cross-Slash, but this remake footage calling it "烈攻斬り", does this mean that this is merely the Lv.1 version of Cross-Slash? Perhaps when all three limit bars are filled, you get a Lv.3 limit break and it gets renamed to 凶斬り.

This would make the Triangle button your "Limit Break" button.

EDIT: I speculate even further that since the Limit Bar consists of three bars here, and the ATB bar having three bars on top, you deplete more ATB bars the higher the level of the Limit Break you use.

Double Growth
In the first gameplay trailer I remember Cloud doing a spinning slash that didn't seem like a Limit Break, maybe it's moves like that? Or Command materia moves?

I also wonder what the Materia option does differently from Magic (maybe changes what Triangle does?), but I really like the look of the command windows.

Anyway this is a pleasant surprise :)

In the 2015 trailer it looked like normal physical attacks filled up a white bar. When Barret and Cloud performed limit breaks (or limit break-esque moves) the bar was full and red.

Ergo, coupled with the new screenshot of the battle against Guard Scorpion, I'm guessing they'll have a system of you needing to build up your Action Bar before you can execute limit breaks. Then it would only make sense that this Action Bar is depleted when you perform a limit break.

ガードスコーピオン = Guard Scorpion

脚A = Leg A

Neat that you seem to aim for destroying Guard Scorpion's legs. I wonder if that's obligatory to beat the boss.

Posting Nomura's comments from the gematsu.com article.

“Here is a new image of Final Fantasy VII,” director Tetsuya Nomura said (via Gameblog.fr). “I’ve put a lot of attention into the combat system, and it’s going to happen without interruption. In meetings, we’ve had a lot of problems with the grenades.” Nomura also mentioned that allies won’t take damage from grenades.

“Here is the first boss in the game,” Nomura continued. “It’s a Scorpion, and the scenery will be partly destructible. Sorry, I asked to show a video, but the company refused. The menus are not yet final, but I will talk more on another occasion.”

Small note: Siliconera is reporting that they've only discussed whether or not allies will take damage from grenades.

As long as the Shaders, lighting and textures look right, im fine. Things looked weird in Mobius.

Completing the transcription set. Nothing surprising in there, just felt like doing this now.

In meetings, we’ve had a lot of problems with the grenades.
I can't help but imagine Nomura, Kitase, Nojima and all the rest throwing grenades at each other and engaging in trench warfare during meetings. That would...explain things.

Things I’ve noticed:

There are two bars that appear above the player character’s head. The top one is the ATB gauge and the bottom is your HP bar. This can be confirmed by cross-referencing the amounts with the bottom-right UI.

The Materia option in the bottom-left UI is grayed out. I agree with Shademp that this option probably lets you open a menu mid-combat to switch around materia. However, I think it's grayed because you don't gain access to the Materia menu until after the first bombing mission (like the original game). That way players are kept in the action and out of some menu that would need a game-pausing tutorial.

In the Guard Scorpion screenshot, you can see markers on the ground of where its attacks will land. I wonder if this will only be for special attacks.

I also wonder if the L1/R1 buttons above the bottom-left UI allow you to cycle through options, or switch between party members. Switching between party members is what I’m most excited for in VIIR's gameplay.

Those look awesome.

It's strange though. The key art showed a more buffed up Cloud, but this Cloud's arms are still inadequately skinny. Which way is it going to be?

Edit:

So the ATB will be retained in the form of controlling / unleashing Limit Breaks?
