Distant Worlds Baltimore

I just attended the Distant Worlds concert in Baltimore last night. I was really impressed, that was really well done. If any of you have seen any of the video game concerts conducted by Arnie Roth, he's a pretty fun guy, not quite the stiff you might expect from a orchestra conductor - but maybe I'm just generalizing :monster:

Also, as I left, I noticed someone had a Cookie Monster shirt on and I was wondering if that was any of you...because I can't imagine why else you'd wear a Cookie Monster shirt to a Final Fantasy concert :P

They did pretty well with the screen and game footage. There were a few things I thought they could have put up at certain points because I'm a nerd like that, but still it was pretty good and got the crowd to laugh a lot - often at the graphics of early FFs. Though when they played Don't Be Afraid, they showed a bit of Squall, Zell, and Seifer on that first mission talking with that dog that keeps parking, then they run off. (No music, so all you hear are the footsteps), and then they run around a bit until the battle transition comes up and the orchestra jumps right into it.

A little before that I think, Arnie was talking and started saying "As I was looking over our play list, I came across a song and wondered 'Why don't we do this? Its short, but iconic'. So I think we got it down and we'll just do real quick and I guess we'll just call it the Final Fantasy Victory Theme." And then he turned around and the orchestra just the 5 second fanfare to big cheers and then he continued to talking.

They also showed the E3 FFXIV trailer and a video message from Uematsu which was funny. Also the video during Swing de Chocobo was hilarious, looped footage of Boko running back and forth and they kept zooming closer and closer in. They also rewound and looped some Chocobo-running in FFX to make it look like dancing (why they didn't play the Chocobos dancing in VII I have no idea). The FFVI opera was also amazing, although they left the screen black for a lot of it and I thought they could have shown a lot more of the in-game opera.

FFVIII had a big presence for whatever reason, with 5 tracks played. Not a bad thing, just interesting when games like IX and X only got 1. The concert ended with Terra's Theme which I was happy about since its my favorite main/world map theme in the series, and they overlayed the credits to the concert on the opening scene of the Magitek Armors walking through the snow.

So he leaves and we all stand and clap and then he comes back out saying, "You've been a great audience so I guess we can do one more for you. ...And you know what it's gonna be." He spun around to, of course, the opening drums to One-Winged Angel to a deafening cheer, seriously, I was amazed, lol. About 30 seconds in, Sephiroth appears on screen to even more cheers. It was the scene, out of VII, where he walks up and tears the Jenova statue thing off. As it zooms into Jenova's head it transitions in the new version of the scene and shows Advent Children clips for most of the song. As it ends it shows AC's Sephiroth walking in the fire and slowly transitions back into FF7's version as he turns and walks away. Very very cool.

It was a lot of fun, it's an odd mixture of this historically high-culture event of a symphony but with a crowd of nerds and cosplayers (not too too many of those, however, there was one fantastic Rydia.) I encourage anyone to go, if given the chance.

And let me know if that was you in the CM shirt :monster:

Ugh. That might just be me, but I think a symphonic concert really isn't the right place for cosplaying...even if it is video game music.

I hope Distant Worlds comes to Germany someday. For now, I'm looking forward to the Symphonic Fantasies concert in September...:D

Wtf, I would have hit any cosplayers, lol. Luckily when I went, everyone looked normal. . . Besides the guys talking about D&D right behind me. :awesome: I mean, they looked normally, just talking about a geeky thing. Not that that's bad... just being on this here FF Forum is dorky.

This happened when I went too, lol. Though for the Opera they kept showing the same scene over and over. =/ They finally had some new ones towards the end, but I agree that they should have shown way more of it!

I watched the DVD of the VOICES concert. It was in Japan and I think I couldn't spot any cosplayer in the Japanese audience...
It's kinda funny because you'd think that there'd be lots of cosplay especially because it is Japan. But it turns out that us Westerners are actually more into these Japanesey things than the Japanese themselves.

Well, go to Harajuku, Tokyo any sunday and you'll quickly find a bridge famous for crazy cosplaying. I also ran into ones that seemed to be cosplayed for no reason at all while I was there.

And there really weren't very many cosplayers at all. The most extreme ones I saw was the aforementioned Rydia (and I don't think I'll complain about her :D), and a Setzer. Other than that everyone was dressed normally save for the odd moogle beanie cap...someone had a Genesis coat too. There was also a girl who just had her hair in an Aeris-braid. That was subtle and tasteful.

In the parking lot was a car with a bumper sticker reading "My other ride is a Chocobo." Where do you even get bumper stickers that nerdy? :P

Anywhere online. :monster:

Also, I'm jealous. One time a FF concert came within 4 hours driving distance of me but alas, I had naught the money. And in Canada, shit like that is even harder to come by.

Both. I could have the money if I didn't piss it all away on compulsive buying. But FF Concerts moreso.

Thread bump because I'm attending this shit for the Canadian debut in October :monster:

For the few of you that have seen it, I was just wondering a little about the set list. I'm glad to hear that FF8 has quite the presence (I love FF8's music), though it is a shame to hear FF9 only got one song, as I love the FF9 soundtrack to pieces. Just wondering other than the Opera and Terra's theme, were there any other FF6 tracks or were those the only two? :monster:

I'm not one for cosplaying, but I'm totally excited to go to this and will be sure to post up a bunch of photos if I can.

I found out about the Baltimore one literally days before and couldn't go because I couldn't get time off. Bah.

I'm slightly tempted to go to the Chicago one in December. They're apparently playing Dancing Mad, and Uematsu will be attending!

I don't think I would cosplay to one of those events. I'd rather dress up very fancy.

Oh man it would be totally awesome if they played Dancing Mad!

and idk how I'm gonna dress (it's still a few months away) but I have a feeling the friend I'm going with is gonna cosplay so I'm fairly certain I'll look normal in any ol' outfit.

If only that song isn't that awesome, at least not imo - it cuts off when it becomes awesome, it doesn't quite know what kinda song it wants to be, and the whole ending is exactly (like, 100%) like that of a 90's pop song by a Dutch sappy love-ballad singer.

No Dancing Mad... BUT.

Probably the second time it's been played by a live orchestra. Not sure if that's true but nonetheless... COOL :monster:

*The audience laughing towards the end is Cid looking up at the Highwind, with his cig falling slowly out of his mouth

I am trying desperately to find the name of the girl who sang the Distant Worlds theme at this concert. I've heard the official recording for the song but she just, wow... blew it away.

I don't think so as it doesn't mention it on their website. Plus, this girl was blonde and Susan Calloway has very dark hair from what I've seen.

It'd be helpful if they actually listed the guest artists on the website. Unless I am being totally blind and missing something.

edit; her name was Syliva Szadovszki and... she attends my University, and is my age. I suddenly feel very underaccomplished :(
