Gabriel, Telcontar (two-way tie)

Holy shit, I just noticed that I got bronze for Best Beard despite not showing any! :awesome:

Now I'll need to redesign/align my sig with this new one. >_>

Enjoy your victory now Tel, I shall have my revenge come the 2014 awards.

I still don't understand why we have these. Call me a sore loser, but... I see nothing but the same people every year and feel like the message is "you're less than and sub par."

Arianna, there are so many members who won awards that they didn't win last year, including new members, and there were a lot of categories that didn't exist last year as well that gave new people the opportunity to win awards. The people who won the awards deserved them. If there is a certain award you want to win next year, perhaps try working for it now.

Do people really work to get the awards? I thought they were just a nice bonus. Apart from Telcontar, obviously, but that's why I didn't vote for him :P

I don't agree that we give the same awards to the same people every year, but I can see Arianna's perspective. It's probably true that the awards make TLS seem more insular than it actually is. That's just a part of having the awards; I've never seen any forum manage to have awards without the same thing occurring. As long as we have them - and nobody is suggesting that we don't - we have to accept it and perhaps try to do something else to counterbalance it.

I love you, Octo. Your reasoning made my day. On-topic: I'm still as adorkable as always! :monster:

You don't ban me, Yop!! YOU DON'T!!

RE: awards: I don't think it's wrong to have them (even if I'm a loser who gets one award despite having been a regular here since 2009  -and thank you very much for the votes everywhere!-) as long as people enjoy them. And people DO enjoy them. I was checking the results from last year (you'll see why in a moment) and there are some significant changes!! It's interesting because, generally speaking, those who were active last year but not this year are lower in the "ranking" while others who weren't that active last year but were this year (Mage did an awesome climb!) went up.

I know that, with this that Arianna says, what I am posting here may be offensive to her with the point she was defending. First of all, I made this without reading what you wrote! And I know some people liked when I did it last year so I thought I would humour them...

And so... this year's statistics:

I try. It hasn't worked. I try to be funny, I try to be out going, but it seems that I am lost in the crowed. Hence, why I suggested the "You Tried" award. I try to be something I'm not, I'm going to guess.

My feelings are here, because I do feel like it's a message. I'm lonely here. I'm not sure what to do to fit in, and feel I give a lot more than I take. I'm awkward, so I don't know when to take clues or how to exactly state what I need or want when I need or want it.

And before anyone pulls that "why do you stay here" question, I will say that I've been here since nearly the beginning. I came to like some of you - those that I did come to trust. Perhaps the trust is one sided, perhaps misplaced. I was in ACF, and liked my group, was becoming close (or at least closer) with some in my group, and would I'd like to see that again. Some of those people created TLS.

Congratulations to those who did win awards. I really mean this.

tbh I think the Awards makes everybody feel awkward at times. ("Why didn't you vote for me?!") I wouldn't mind if we dropped them; the problem is they bring activity to the board. Also, shameless flirting is fun :desu:

What we could do (and should do) imo is to be more democratic about which awards we want to vote for, at least have a discussion in the mod section for it. I think the "you tried" and "least likely to get an award" are good awards, but the thing is, even the "smex" categories (porn stars, pistoning penors), as well as "member you'd most like to meet", "best avatar", "mos fervent TLSer", "best beard" and "best pantomime villain" (I'm sad the "Being Splintered Award" didn't make it, and "nicest member" should have made the cut) are all those kind of categories that "makes it possible to win an award". What you did Ari, was you focused on one award that didn't even make the list, and when it didn't, you sort of dropped out.

It's not about people clinging together to vote for each other - it's about people suggesting themselves which categories they would like to be nommed for (and protesting when they aren't to get someone to nom them), then rallying for the ones they did get nommed in. I know it sounds like a clusterfuck of social rules, which it is, no doubt - but in the end it's all about staying active and being ranty/ friendly when the nominations start happening. A lot of people didn't get awards this year that should have had one (Dark and Divine, for instance; their work on the front page sailed completely unnoticed by) so yes, it's a publicity/ popularity contest - for both good and bad. Take it for what it is and treat it as such - not getting awards does not mean you're unwelcome, and getting them does not mean you're to be put on a pedestal of sorts, it just means people have noticed you (for being active) and remember you when they see the poll.

tl;dr I think I made a similar comment when you said a similar thing last year: You're not out of place, you belong here, stay put! I like your XIII rant (even for being minorly obsessed with the fal'Cie ) and you should start being active in the General Discussion section again - you've been less active there this year haven't you, which probably also affected the awards this year. How's your new job going? Has your cat started behaving recently? I have no idea what's been up with you. If you look at the overall results of the award, it's the people who spill their guts the most in this place that is on top of this list. Not that you need to start sharing every detail about your personal life - it's just a reminder that the awards result is not a sign that people don't like you or feel you should just get out. Nobody would question why you're still here, why would you even say that - you're beating yourself up where nobody here is.

I came sixteenth on the medal tally? I must be the Cuba of TLS.

...therefore, if I shake Mage's hand, controversy will erupt.

If I'm not mistaken, I didn't do quite as well as last year, and I'm ok with that. I wasn't quite as active for a goodly portion of this year, what with the baby and recurring illness and work all keeping me from the forum. Combine that with the categories getting shaken up some (I'm much more likely to get Zombie related survival trophies than in general for some reason) and it was inevitable :reapermon: I still done good, and my beard gets the recognition it deserves.

To add to what Fangu said, I think a lot of nominations come out of the General Discussion section, which I also don't participate in much. I post regularly in the News and Entertainment sub-forums, but rarely otherwise in that area.

Thus, it's not surprising that I wasn't nominated for Biggest Non-FF Geek, though I know if folks knew more about my geekiness, I could rival anyone here.

I also generally don't divulge much about my personal life -- for instance, until yesterday, only one or two of you knew my mom died in August. Only one of you knows that my wife left me in November and is now living in Texas. None of you know the totality of all the bad crap that I dealt with last year, which includes losing two dogs, a cat, my mom, my wife and I separating, my dad almost dying (spent the better part of a month in the hospital after we buried my mom), losing out on buying a house, having to move away from my surrogate daughter (she and her mom moved an hour from where I work shortly after the separation) and being told there isn't a lawyer in the land who can help me with access to my son in Canada who will be four in March and whom I've never gotten to meet.

But I don't tell people this stuff because I know everyone has their own shit to deal with and I'm unwilling to put mine on other people. That's not a knock against asking for support, by the way. It's what people should do. It's just not what I do.

So, yeah, what you're willing to divulge impacts what people know about you and how they see you. Me? I focus on the good stuff, like having sex with multiple women all the time.

Addendum: No one needs to be worried about me, honest. I am legitimately fine, I promise.

I'll have been a member a year next month and I honestly saw the awards as friendly, but hilarious banter. I see no need in taking them so seriously (though that's just what I think, go ahead for those who want to. I want to revel in your pain! :awesome:) because at the end of the day, it's a fun little thing for the community to have.

And this is the only forum I've come across that's done awards. It's also the first forum I've felt comfortable in being myself for a very long time. So really, to get a few awards without even trying and just being myself (even if I was pushing me and Carlie for best ship. I just liked that title attached to us!) is quite humbling.

Also, Tres makes such valid points in his post. Just show parts of yourself you're comfortable with and divulge the other parts at a later point if you wish.

Edit: I'd also like to dispute the total awards thing. Pretty sure I had one silver? :monster:

STAHP. Give UP!

Stop being something your not just to fit in. Be yourself don't bend over backwards for us we are just random people on a random website on the web.

The reason some of these people win some awards, some more then others is because they arent being something they're not. They are being completely comfortable and just basically mingling online on a daily basis.

The awards, just like the thanks button are superficial and for fun. Dont look to deep into them. I didnt win all that much this year ( :sadpanda: ) but even if I had won every single award this year it wouldnt even come close to all of the times some people here were nice to me and made me feel great with a few simple words.

If your looking for adoration on the board once per year your doing it wrong , you can get it all of the time around the board :monster:

I felt the same way tying for it and not having shown beard this year, and as a matter of fact being in a position incapable of growing a beard lol

Exactly. Thanks are like the taxes you pay every day, from your paycheck and on bread. The awards are like the annual taxes you file every year.

Did I officially sap the fun out of all of it just now? :awesome:

I wish more members would venture into General more often, it's nice and laid back most of the time and I tend to lurk there since I don't have time for gaming much any more so I'm kinda stuck in a time warp.
There's some awesome folk I barely talk to but would like to more.

Also Gabe, I've seen your spic fluff, it's cute in a panda-trying-to-be-manly kinda way. :monster:

Also also Ghost: *shakes hands fervently* Now I'm gonna slap sanctions on you. :monster:
