ACC Script?

Do you mean the English version of the movie as it appears if you have the subtitles on, or a more accurate translation of the Japanese? I don't know of any on-line script, but I'd be happy to write out any scenes you need if you like. If it's a specific question I might know off the top of my head - I've watched it that many times!

Cherry, you are amazing! The lines I am looking for are the scenes between Rufus and Kadaj, specifically when Rufus is referring to the Lifestream and the cyclical nature of human history, and also when he asserts that humanity will always triumph over the forces of destruction.

I was re-watching it again today, actually, and it really struck me for the first time just how much Rufus knows. He seems to understand better than anyone (anyone who appears in the film, that is, except maybe Vincent) exactly how the Lifestream works, and surprises Cloud with the apparently preposterous, but, in the event, correct hypothesis that Sephiroth's consciousness may not have been absorbed into the Lifestream but is still free-floating around, as malevolent as ever and capable of both will and action.

Anyway - thank you for the offer, and I'm gratefully taking you up on it.

You know, Ite, it's fair enough that you don't like the Compilation; I respect your views, and nobody is trying to get you to change your mind. But that post was uncalled for. It contributed nothing, it told me nothing about you that I didn't know already, and it was insulting. What are you even doing in the Compilation section of the forums, anyway?

The more I watch them, the more I like both versions. I like different things in the different films. I've written out the scenes you asked for, and I've done most of the other important Rufus scenes too, because I got into it, and I think some of the differences between AC and ACC are interesting. Where there are occasional significant differences between the spoken words and the subtitles, I've put the subtitle words too, in brackets. To get to the Rufus and Kadaj discussion about cycles of life etc. it's under the yellow sentence for ease of finding!

I'll do ACC in blue, so they're easy to tell apart.

ACC opening scene. Not in AC at all.

Kadaj: Why does humankind even bother? You wreck everything you’ve ever made, then you start over like it’ll be any different the next time.

Rufus: I suppose we’re no good at facing our memories. We’d rather gild the past… Find something worthwhile among the rubble and build a future with that.

Kadaj: And that’s why you salvaged Mother? To “gild the past”?

Rufus: We were trying to ride ourselves of a more immediate problem.

Kadaj: You can’t mean the stigma? But you’re the ones who brought that on yourselves in the first place. Well now. I guess you really do have a short memory.

Rufus. Hm. No. Not me. You see, it is my choice to forget.

The first scene at Healen is much longer in ACC, and to my mind, makes a lot more sense. I've include the original for comparison.

ACC at Healen Lodge

Reno: Okay, so you’re good. (Cloud locks him out.) Yeah, Rude, looking sharp! (How can he tell through the door?)

Rufus: Good. You fight like the SOLDIER you once claimed to be. You haven’t lost your touch. (Subtitles – You haven’t rusted a bit.)

Cloud: Rufus Shinra. Do I feel sorry for you.

(Rude clears his throat.)

Rufus: The day of the explosion –

Cloud: What do you want from me?

Rufus: - I managed to get out of the building –

Cloud: Who were the guys that attacked me?

Rufus: - before it colla –

Cloud: I’m leaving.

Rufus: We need your assistance, Cloud.

Cloud: Not interes –

Rufus: I acknowledge that Shinra owes the planet a lot. It goes without saying that my company and I are the ones who put the world in the sorry state it’s in. Therefore, it’s our responsibility to set things right.

Reno: I’m still out here…

Rufus: As a first step we have commenced an investigation in Sephiroth’s wake. It’s been two years. Now that the world is back on its feet again, what poses the greatest threat? Well, that one’s easy: Geostigma. And we have reason to think Sephiroth is the one responsible. The populace, they blame mako energy, and the reactors… even the Lifestream for causing the stigma. However, isn’t that blame misplaced? The Lifestream has existed as long as the planet, and even mako energy has been part of our lives for over forty years. And yet, there’s no mention of the stigma in recorded history. So, what happened during our time to change all that? I can think of only one thing. The arrival of Sephiroth.

Cloud: Sephiroth is dead.

Rufus: Yes, but has his mind died? What if he somehow dissolved into the Lifestream… coursing through the planet undiffused? I know it is merely my speculation – but it is possible, isn’t it? And we can’t cure the stigma until we know the truth. So we took action. We went to look for traces of Sephiroth. We started – do you know where?

Reno: Yup, at the Northern Cave!

Rufus: And what do you think we found? Relax – we didn’t find anything. However, not all went as planned. We were… interrupted.

(Cut to footage of Elena and Tseng in the cave)

Elena: Get – get out! Tseng!

Rufus (still speaking to Cloud): Kadaj and his gang.

Cloud: Kadaj?

Rufus: They’ll be after you as well. If they haven’t already found you.

Cloud: Leave me out of this.

Kadaj (on footage): Don’t think you can keep her from us for long.

(Back to the lodge)

Rufus: How? Your ties to Sephiroth run as deep as ours do, Cloud. If Kadaj’s purpose is to do what’s necessary to prepare for the moment – we stand in the way as his greatest threat.

Cloud: Moment?

Rufus: Sephiroth… reborn.

Cloud: Are you done talking?

Rufus: Let’s get to the issue at hand. In order to combat Kadaj, we need someone with your expertise. Will you join us – former SOLDIER, Cloud?

Cloud: In my head. (Pauses, having opened the door) What’s this stuff about “Mother”?

Rufus: Why, did Kadaj mention something?

Cloud: Rufus – if you’re hiding something…

Rufus: I’d never keep a secret. Not from a comrade. You must want to learn all you can about the stigma? Naturally, for the sake of those orphans you live with. Surely, you long to see the smiles return to their faces? All we want in the end is to rebuild our world, Cloud. (Rufus holds out his hand.)

Cloud: But I…

Reno: Come on Cloud. Think about it. Together we could rebuild Shinra!

Cloud: Not interested.

Rude: Reno!
Rufus: Reno…

AC Healen scene

Rufus: What do you think we found? Nothing. Nothing at all. You can relax. However, not all went as planned. We were interrupted by the same three who attacked you. Kadaj and his gang.

Cloud: Kadaj?

Rufus: It seems he doesn’t want us finishing what we started. Really, what could they be thinking?

Cloud: What does that have to do with me?

Reno: You’re our buddy, aren’t ya? (Cloud kicks the door.)

Rufus: Kadaj’s group is young and violent. As dangerous as they come. That’s why we decided it might be in our best interests to hire a little muscle.

Cloud: Too bad. I’m a delivery boy now.

Rufus: You’re all we have. Cloud, look – you’re an ex-SOLDIER aren’t you?

Cloud: Ha! In my head. (Pauses, having opened the door) What’s this stuff about “Mother”?

Rufus: Why, did Kadaj say something to you? No surprise. There are plenty of kids who miss their mothers. That’s the world we live in. I hear there are orphans living with you. Think about it. Don’t you want to put smiles back on their faces? All we want in the end, is to rebuild our world, Cloud. (Rufus holds out his hand.)

Cloud: But I…

Reno: Come on Cloud. Think about it. Together we could rebuild Shinra!

Cloud: Not interested.

Rude: Reno!
Rufus: Reno…

Oh how I love the difference in the way Rude and Rufus say "Reno". There's a fanfic in there I'm sure! I think Rufus cuts him a lot of slack because of his loyalty to the idea of Shinra.

In ACC Rufus does seem very well informed. Kilmister's theory pointed him to the Sephiroth gene idea I think, and, if The Kids are Alright is to be included, Shinra had encountered Kadaj before...

This scene is exactly the same in AC and ACC.

ACC and AC at Healen, with Kadaj

Reno and Rude are on the floor, too wounded to move.

Kadaj: Boy, do I hate liars.

Rufus: I apologise. Ths time you get the truth. The object you seek fell from the helicopter while we were running from you. I’m afraid we were careless.

Kadaj: Is that right?

Rufus: I swear it.

Kadaj: Fine. Then swear on these. (He throws the bloody ID badges of Tseng and Elena at Rufus.)

Rufus: Why did you do this?

Kadaj: We need Mother’s power. The Reunion is coming and we need her.

Rufus: Reunion?

Kadaj: My brothers and sisters who share Mother’s cells will all assemble. And together we’ll take revenge on the planet! We’ve already sent out the invitations, but, you know, someone’s gone and hidden the guest of honour.

Rufus: Invitations?

Kadaj: The stigma? But you know all about that, Sir. Mother’s mimetic legacy lives on in the Lifestream and makes it happen. She does so much for us, and we – we don’t even know where to find her. But what can we do? We’re just Remnants – merely remnants of Mother’s legacy. Until we find Mother and receive her cells, we can’t be whole again. Geostigma and a legacy aren’t enough. Not for a true Reunion.

Rufus: What do you mean?

Kadaj: But, Sir, surely you’ve noticed? (Kadaj kneels and does that ‘looking like Sephiroth’ thing!)

Okay - finally - this is the bit you actually wanted!

ACC Rufus and Kadaj on the unfinished building in Edge. (Where we saw Kadaj bringing Rufus in the opening scene of ACC, but not AC.)

Rufus: Say Kadaj. I’ve got a question for you.

Kadaj: I’ve got an answer.

Rufus: You told me that you needed Jenova cells in order to be whole again, right? What did you mean by that?

Kadaj: Him. He’s coming back.

Rufus: Sephiroth. The nightmare.

Kadaj: So they say.

Rufus: You mean –

Kadaj: I’ve never known Sephiroth. I just… I sense him there. It’s unbearable to think Mother might want Sephiroth more than –

Rufus: Poor little Remnant.

Kadaj: It doesn’t matter who she picks! You’ll all meet the same end! Mother came to this planet after a long journey. To rid the cosmos of fools like you! But you know as well as I do – nothing’s changed since she got here. I have to change it, to make her happy. If Mother willed it, I’d do anything for her!

Rufus: Hm. The nightmare returns.

Kadaj: As long as you exist, the nightmares will come again and again.

Rufus: The Lifestream courses through our world… ever flowing between the edge of life and death. If that cycle is the very truth of life, then history, too, will inevitably repeat itself. Go on, bring your Jenovas and your Sephiroths. Cause trouble till your heart’s content. We’ll do as life mandates, we promise. We won’t let you win and we’ll stop you.

Kadaj: Please, Sir, is that your excuse for going after Mother yourself? You don’t seem all that sorry.

Rufus: Sorry? The truth is, I actually enjoy it.

Kadaj: Good. Then let’s put an end to all this.

He summons the Bahamut!

I much prefer Rufus' words at this point in AC. Because the film shows the lifestream and scenes from the past there's no need for them to worry about synching, so the words flow much more effectively, which suits Rufus' lovely voice!

AC. Rufus and Kadaj on the unfinished building in Edge. (Where we saw Kadaj bringing Rufus in the opening scene of ACC, but not AC.)

Rufus: Say Kadaj. I’ve got a question for you.

Kadaj: I’ve got an answer.

Rufus: You said you needed Jenova cells in order to be whole again. What did you mean by that?

Kadaj: Him. He’s coming back.

Rufus: Sephiroth. The nightmare.

Kadaj: So they say.

Rufus: You mean –

Kadaj: I’ve never known Sephiroth. I just… I sense him there. It’s unbearable to think Mother might want Sephiroth more than –

Rufus: Poor little Remnant. (Subtitles – Poor little avatar.)

(Subtitles – It’s Nightmare Junior (I liked that one!))

Kadaj: As long as you exist, the nightmare will come again and again.

Rufus: The Lifestream courses through our planet, back and forth across the borders of life and death. If that cycle is the very truth of life, then history, too, will inevitably repeat itself. So go on, bring your Jenovas and your Sephiroths. It won’t matter. We’ll do as life dictates, and stop you every single time.

Kadaj: Please, Sir, is that your excuse for going after Mother yourself? You don’t seem all that sorry.

Rufus: Sorry? Why, I’ve never had this much fun.

Kadaj: Good. Then let’s put an end to all this.

He summons the Bahamut!

Hope that's helpful. This is fun - I may do the Reno and Rude scenes, too. I like the two versions of their verbal sparing with Loz and Yazoo.

Loved that! Perfect. And I could hear their voices the entire time I was reading it. Thank you so much, Cherry. I'm glad it wasn't a chore; that you enjoyed it.

Obviously a lot of Rufus's lines, especially in his scene with Cloud, are exposition, so of course he would have to put forth the notion of Sephiroth's mind having survived. But I can think of some other things that have happened recently to cause the geostigma, especially Meteor. It came into contact with the earth and the Lifestream; it could have been carrying an extraterrestrial virus. But whatever.

I totally agree with you about the final bit of dialogue being better in AC. Rufus's lines here:

Rufus: The Lifestream courses through our planet, back and forth across the borders of life and death. If that cycle is the very truth of life, then history, too, will inevitably repeat itself. So go on, bring your Jenovas and your Sephiroths. It won’t matter. We’ll do as life dictates, and stop you every single time.

sound much better than "We won't let you win and stop you," which is what my subtitles say. Kadaj's line that follows:

Kadaj: Please, Sir, is that your excuse for going after Mother yourself? You don’t seem all that sorry.

makes no sense to me. Why would Rufus be sorry? When has Rufus ever been sorry?

Anyway, thanks again!

You're welcome.

Yes - I agree about Meteor being at least as likely a source of the stigma as Sephiroth, if not more so. And the Lifestream itself, bursting out of the planet like that, could well have been the cause, especially given the way the planet's been treated - it's not surprising that 'the populace' blames the Lifestream! At least OTWTAS gives us Kilmister's theories about Sephiroth and Jenova cells to explain why Rufus is so convinced by this idea.

I don't get Kadaj's line either. Kadaj isn't a very rational creature! Perhaps he just thinks Rufus should be sorry for daring to go after Mother and for the company's having used her for Shinra purposes in the past. Which doesn't seem very grateful, given that without Shinra there wouldn't have been a Sephiroth!

The Japanese version of the 'sorry' line wasn't saying that he didn't seem sorry, but asking if he wasn't actually regretting it.

Thanks, Hito. That makes a LOT more sense.
Can you explain something to me? In English, the difference between "You don't seem all that sorry," and "Don't you regret it now?" is huge, partly because of the irony that normally accompanies the first statement, and secondly because of the connotations of apology that "sorry" carries. Is the difference very subtle in Japanese? I'm only asking because I'm surprised that a translator would get that wrong, especially since the line "You don't seem all that sorry," really didn't make sense in context.
Or maybe that was just my reading of it.
