After Tifa was brought to Midgar

I'm looking for some bits of info about the period between Tifa being brought to Midgar and joining Avalanche. I know info is scarce on that, but can anyone think of anything in the script or ultimanias?

I haven't looked at the part where she finds Cloud in Midgar yet.

I know Zangan left and eventually went back to find Nibelheim rebuild, but she didnt know that until seeing the letter he left in the piano.

I know her desire for revnge led to her finding Avalanche. "The slogans they used, about how they were anti-Shinra and anti-Mako, were just what I needed to hide my true motive."

If I remember correctly, Zangan brought her to Midgar for proper medical attention, so she probably woke up in a clinic. Then she had to get 7th heaven, which got set up as a hideout for AVALANCHE. Then there's the period of time between Nibelheim and Corel burned plus the time it would take for Barret to get his gun arm and go to Midgar. Basically, add stuff up based on the required order of events and you can narrow down when some things happen.

I dunno what the official story is.

My headcanon says she took work in 7th Heaven, and then the old owner either gave it to her (maybe they were Anti-Shinra too, maybe they didn't have any kids to inherit the business), or she saved up and bought the place. Something like that.

This is what I have so far for that part.

I don’t know what happened after that. When I woke up, I was in a clinic in the slums of Midgar. Zangan had found me in the reactor, but his materia couldn’t heal me, so he brought me here.

Zangan left. He must have gone to search for the truth about what happened in Nibelheim. I haven’t heard from him since. My recovery took a long time. They weren’t sure if I would even make it.

Months passed, and I let my desire for revenge consume me. That’s when I found Avalanche. The slogans they used, about how they were anti-Shinra and anti-Mako, were just what I needed to hide my true motive.

It's probably years before she joined AVALANCHE rather, the Mako Reactor was the first real mission of Barret and Jessie's AVALANCHE it seemed.

Since she couldn't have met Barret until a year later, it kinda has me thinking...could she have joined the original AVALANCHE at some point? I know the bomb Jessie made to blow up Mako Reactor 1 was a product of the original AVALANCHE, which explains the collateral damage.

The timeline is vague

2002 Oct
Nibelheim Incident

2003 May
Corel Incident

2007 Sept/Oct
Tifa finds Cloud
Start of FF7

Seventh Heaven was an old Avalanche base, where they find bomb plans on a computer

The thing that confuses me is at what point the new Avalanche was formed. Did Barret bring them together?

Tifa definitely joined after they had formed.

Where was it confirmed that Jessie's bomb was based on a recipe from the original AVALANCHE? I wonder if we accepted this a long time ago and have been saying it for so long we convinced ourselves that it's true. I can't for the life of me remember where it comes from.

I dunno what the official story is.

The owner was anti-Shin-Ra, yeah. Zack suggests the name "Seventh Heaven" to him in Crisis Core, and the guy muses that the place could be a good base for an anti-Shin-Ra organization -- and that it needs a busty barmaid: "Maybe there'll be a young girl tending the bar... Yes, yes, with a big bosom and long legs! Just a killer figure!"

I do believe Jessie says she got the instructions for the bomb off of the computer in the basement. Perhaps it was either a computer left there by Avalanche 1.0 or...they have internet?

It's a line from Jessie in Maiden, but it comes from this line

うかつ・・・・・・ 見てよ、このニュース・・・・・・。こんなに爆発してる
Careless... Look, the news... That blast...

やっぱり、私の爆弾のせい?でも、このコンピューターの指示通り作っただけなのに
That was because of my bomb? But I just made it using the instructions on the computer.

Oh no! I must've made a miscalculation somewhere.

Yeah, that's it.

So I guess the question is, does the world of FFVII have an internet like our internet? Or is it simply limited to Shinra? Would they even have internet in the slums?

These are the real questions of FFVII.

Yeah, that's it.

So I guess the question is, does the world of FFVII have an internet like our internet? Or is it simply limited to Shinra? Would they even have internet in the slums?

These are the real questions of FFVII.

One of the problems in this kind of question is that there's been little effort to get technological consistency throughout the compilation. The technology of the OG seemed contemporary with the time of release, and the same could be said of Crisis Core, which was released 10 years later but took place 4 years earlier. DoC's technology doesn't seem very consistent with that of the OG either.

My take on this is that yes, there would be internet. But what kind of internet would that be? The internet in 1997 was a very different thing from what it is now (or what it was in 2007 for that matter) - back in 1997 the internet was not very spread and was important to only a few. Even if Shinra is only internet proprietor and provider (as opposed to having multiple companies providing the service), it wouldn't change how spread the service would be since the Shinra has monopoly on pretty much anything.
In these situations, I would easily imagine that people from the slums could get access to internet via piracy. Then the next question would be how much Shinra would care about chasing down the pirate connections.

The plans for the bomb were designed by the old Avalanche to cause as much destruction as possible. New Avalanche thought it would just destroy the reactor, not kill people in the surrounding area.

"The whole plan was actually drafted by the old Avalanche which no longer exists anymore. There were many more members in Avalanche and they were a much more extreme group. We only inherited the name of their resistance group, "Avalanche" from those people who are no longer around. But details of how to make a bomb and the plans of where to set it were left on a computer. Since I was good with machinery and bombs, I decided to try it... But I'm sure that plan was never intended to be used to just disable Mako Reactor One. The people that came up with the horrific plan hated the Shinra. They hated them so much that they would go as far as sacrificing lots of people... I should have realized it. Barret knew nothing about it."

Benny Matsuyama got that from somewhere. Though I'd probably double check that translation.

Also, from Crisis Core
Located in the slums of Sector 7 in Midgar, the original 7th Heaven bar was built by an unnamed carpenter during the events of Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-, and named "7th Heaven" by Zack Fair during a conversation.

Intended to house an anti-Shinra base from the start; in Final Fantasy VII it serves as the base of operations for the AVALANCHE terrorist organization.

Ah, okay, there it is. I hadn't read or listened to Maiden in a long time. I could only remember Episode:Tifa referring to what happened as a "miscalculation."

Also, about the technology, Jessie describes Midgar as the crystalisation of the highest level of technology. Thre's a central data bank in Shinra HQ that tracks IDs, so there is some sort of network.

The tv in the bar in seventh heaven has no reception, possibly due to the explosion taking out the transmitor. But downstairs they're getting a news feed, maybe cable feed or internet.

Although a scene was cut where Cloud and Tifa are talking, and the news report comes on where President Shinra's statement is read., but the same report is on the tv downstairs.

Tifa "Cloud, you're back? Oh, wait a sec. They're reading President Shin-Ra's statement on the news."

"...A group claiming to be Avalanche has claimed responsibility for today's bombing of Mako Reactor 1. According to the statement, Avalanche have threatened to continue with their campaign of terror in the future. However, citizens of Midgar, please rest assured We, the Shin-Ra Company, have decided to mobilize Soldier to protect you from such violence. With that..."

The idea that "New" "(ugh hate saying that) Avalanche didn't know just HOW destructive the No. 1 Reactor Bombing would be is fine, the idea they didn't know some civilians would die seems to defeat a lot of the point of FF7's plot, to me. There's even a specific exchange, late in the game, between Cait Sith/Reeve and Barret, where he says "When ya blew up the No. 1 Reactor, how many folks d'ya think died!" and instead of saying "That wasn't supposed to happen!", or "That was an accident!", Barret just says "That was for the Planet!" (or something just like that). This whole idea of "if ya wanna make an omelet, ya gotta break some eggs" being challenged, and becoming a monster to deal with a monster etc etc etc etc has always seemed to be one of the main themes of the game in my mind

Well I am just summarising what she said in Maiden. Biggs and Wedge also go into it.

"We fought with Avalanche because we had the same sympathy and thoughts. We thought that it couldn't be helped to have a few sacrifices if we were to stop Shinra. But we were completely wrong. We understood that when we came here... You know about it too don't you, Aerith? About the explosion of the First Sector Mako Reactor."

"Yes... The First Sector was right at the other side of the slums I lived in. We weren't told much about it, but we heard quite a lot of people died..."

"At that time, we only thought that they were getting what they deserved if they got caught in the explosion, since they were all people that worked for Shinra on the upper plate. But in the end, all of us ended up here whether we worked for Shinra or not. So we fve been thinking about why we did it. All we were really doing was raising our voices and shouting out our opinions like drunks. We were just over-exaggerating about how we were saving the Planet..."

"...I didn't think about it that much either. I didn't want a minor role in life. I wanted to shine. So I thought by joining Avalanche, I could be a hero who could save the future of the Planet and that's all I thought about... I never imagined that it would get others involved. It's just so foolish..."

Wedge lowered his head in embarassment.

"The whole plan was actually drafted by the old Avalanche which no longer exists anymore."

Jessie went on regretfully, "There were many more members in Avalanche and they were a much more extreme group. We only inherited the name of their resistance group, "Avalanche" from those people who are no longer around. But details of how to make a bomb and the plans of where to set it were left on a computer. Since I was good with machinery and bombs, I decided to try it... They hated them so much that they would go as far as sacrificing lots of people... I should have realized it. Barret knew nothing about it."

"That's why we..."

Dejected, Biggs looked up to the sky. "Why we wanted to merge with the Planet right away. We wanted to disappear. I remember now. But it was impossible. Barret's fighting to save even more people. We can't do any of that to atone for our sins. We can only be here and continue to suffer."

"In the end, it was all too easy for us to forget who we were because we wanted to be at ease here."

"It just didn't work. When we had the chance, we would revert to the way we were. Even then we're not as clear an entity as you are. It's kinda like a curse."

Oh yes, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that I was accusing you of reading something that wasn't there, or having 'headcanon' that didn't add up, or something. It was actually quite an interesting read, and thanks for posting it! I just think this is one of the cases where the Compilation/Expanded Universe seems to contradict the original game, either in plot details or even just sentiment. when changing so many writers' hands, it's only bound to happen. Although not everyone may feel this way about the reactor bombing

Yeah, its tough trying to bring it all together. Looking at the timelines on different sites gets overwhelming, especially with the Wikia. That site fucks my browser up.

Isn't Midgar kind of a long way to go for medical attention? Do we know for certain he brought her there?

Dirge confirms that there was an internet. It goes down with Meteorfall, and they get it back online three years later.

Its still got character/plot details that must have been discussed with people like Nomura.
