Age of Empires II

I sometimes watch matches between more skilled folk than myself on youtube. I played this on computers in high school, and a friend would always beat us with elephant armies. I then learnt that elephants had a weakness, but not until one of our last matches. It was horrible to play online in Australia at the time. Dial-up. Blergh.

It's not AoE2 exactly, it's AoE2 HD, which is a remake, not the original game. I like to think a game like that is a lot easier to make nowadays with off-the-shelf technology and shit, so the builders can work on content and mechanics, less on technology. I'm sure it was quite advanced at the time re: graphics and shit.

Wololo.

I used to play AoEII a lot. Then I got into turn-based strategy and never really felt like going back to real-time. I have the HD version though if anyone wants to have a really crappy match sometime. :wackymonster:

AoE games were really made during the best era of cheat codes, imo. So, SO many of them just for fun dicking about with things. I really miss having cheat codes in games like that that were purely for amusement.

Age of Empires consumed my middle school life, Age of Empires II consumed much of my adult life. With the ocassional exception of Star Wars Galactic Battlefronts (AoE II - IN SPAAAAACE) and Halo Wars it is the only RTS That I have ever played (Yes, sorry Starcraft fans).

So there's enough of us with the game, and hopefully the HD version... we should totally have a group Age of Empires multiplayer night! Let us spill Anglo blood together! (Plays as the Chinese because Chu Ko Nu roxors my soxors and also cannons)

MARCO to see all of the map.
POLO to clear the shadows.
Racing cars, super dogs, and "furious the monkey boy".
Some things you never forget...

Used to spend ages not so much playing the game as I did making custom scenarios. Using the Trigger & Effect section to create dialogue, thus characters & story, completing the scenario by reaching a location or defeating a particular enemy, dying in land you shouldn't walk across, and even make mini-games in large maps etc. etc.
Good times.

Gaia to control all the animals
King Arthur to turn all the birds into dragons.
Dark Rain to make Archers who turned into trees when immobile.

Oh mans. Between this and Disciples II, I spent an INSANE amount of time making custom games when I was a kid. Glad to know I wasn't the only one.

I just played it a lot :monster:. There was something satisfying around gathering resources and building shit. My mum played plenty of it too, probably more than me.

I made a custom campaign once based around ancient China and the "Mandate of Heaven". The idea was to unify the five kingdoms at the time and then in the final mission you had to build a wonder to prove your mandate. That mission was the best campaign mission I ever made as it had you leading a small army with no villagers through a wood densely packed with raiders and enemy armies. You had to get to an endzone in front of your new kingdom and then with a tribute paid by your would be enemies build a wonder and then defend it from the last of the raids. (Edit: Part of the "tribute" was a few villagers)

It was a lot of fun, I wish I hadn't lost it!

Also, didn't know about Dark Rain and now I want to use it immediately. I was a huge fan of the resource spamming ones "Cheese Steak Jimmy's" "Lumberjack" "Robin Hood" I forget the one for stone... was it "Rock On"?

Oh, and as Red alluded to: "How do you turn this on" Not just a great cheat (the mass damage dealing racing cars) but a great name for a cheat.

Actually, this new expansion for AOE2 HD is actually the third... after the remake was released a few years ago. :monster:

So this is a thing now, people are playing it quite a bit and that's why expansions are still coming out!

In fact, I got a few of my fellow racing journalists into this and we play sometimes. It's good fun!

Also, the Dark Rain stealth archers would walk across water, too. I used them to make a Sherwood Forest custom Map once. It was awesome. Also: http://artho.com/age/files/cheats.html

I'm happy to see it but man, they do not know how to make AoE's gameplay look interesting.
