Avatars and white space?

What format does an image have to be in so that white space doesn't fill in where it should be transparent?

I've tried PNG and GIF and I still get it. Help?

I always use png. But that's after deleting the white space in photoshop, and saving the image without a background.

Chances are your transparency is waaaay to big, you gotta tweak it some more.
