Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot

Interesting. As the article explains the vision, there's great potential. The question is whether it'll be able to live up to it.

I fear it's doomed with Fox involved. But good luck to them. They tried to do this a while ago without Joss and there was massive backlash wasn't there? Those damn Kuzui's.

When it comes to the slayer mythology I always felt like a lot of it was left unexplored (maybe on purpose), given how much I loved episodes like "Restless" or "Get it Done" and obviously various bits of season 5, so there's a lot they could do with it.

It's just... I feel like there's so much they could do with the slayer brand, does it have to be "Buffy"? Could they not do a slight AU and give us a new slayer character? I know they want that brand recognition but SMG is always going to be Buffy to us and the show is so iconic even for people who didn't watch it.

I'm already imagining a dimension jump episode where they meet up with members of the original scoobies for some reason >.<

This show has an uphill battle to climb. But maybe it IS time they gave it a try. You can clearly tell I'm in two minds about this.

Soft reboot in the same continuity I can live with. But if it's a hard reset you're pretending like my favorite show of all time never happened and for that reason - I'm out. :monster:

I just don't know what I'm feeling personally by the way which is why I've not put down my own thoughts on the announcement. I can just see both sides of the arguments - the (loss) of a rich story legacy and sandbox that had a lot of room for new projects which needn't have been a reboot, but then again, the sheer potential that this reboot exudes by starring an African-American Buffy, including twists to her home life, and more tightly written modern satire ...

Yeah, just don't know at the moment.

The timing of the announcement probably explains why the current four-issue arc of the Buffy comic ("Season 12: Reckoning") is supposed to be the last season.

Lex has pretty much voiced my own sentiments about the reboot.

I honestly find it hard to see Buffy as anyone but Sarah Michelle Gellar, but I'd be satisfied if they gave her a part as new Buffy's watcher or something.

I have no idea how this will go down and I'm a bit iffy if I'm honest. However, I can't really knock it until I've tried it. Reboots and remakes are still on the rage these days, though it doesn't necessarily mean they're all good. I'm in the middle of watching the original series (think I'm somewhere in season 5?) right now and I think I'll cling onto that for a bit longer.

However, with Joss actually onboard, I might have a bit of hope it'll be good.

Seems like it would be much easier to make a sequel or prequel. Although I don't know if what happened in the comics contradicts that.

African-American Buffy: it's like Kendra never existed. :monster:
I'd like to see it set in the same universe but not be about Buffy. They already exploited the existence of multiple slayers existing and Sunnydale can't be the only hell mouth. Lots of scope, lots of demons, lots of vampires, witches optional. I would very much like to see Spike and Drusilla cameo.

Disclaimer: I've only ever seen the TV show.

Lets face it: They only care about having the title. Everything else is expendable in the name of acquiring a new audience that likely never watched the original (Somehow).

It's been off Netflix long enough that I can believe their mistrust in a built in YOUTH (specifically) audience having ever seen the original by the time this airs.

With that said, I will accept this ONLY if the only thing that's the same is that the lead protagonist (Somehow post 00s) is named Buffy. I do not want to see a single character other than Buffy redone, nor do I want rehashed plotlines or concepts.

According to some tweets from the writer, this is now being hinted at as a 'continuation'. Due to backlash? Or simply misinformation from the initial reporting? Who knows. But yeah, fears can be cast aside, as this is now looking like a continuation until we hear something mega-official.

What the writer tweeted is still very vague, but it doesn't necessarily speak to a continuation in my mind. And taking into account the wider mythos, a continuation wouldn't really fit into the continuity established by "Fray," which the current "Reckoning" arc of Buffy's comic (the final season of her comic) looks set to establish.

If I had to guess, I'd say they're going for a reboot with a different cast of characters. The lead may or may not be named Buffy, but the others won't be Willow, Xander, Giles, etc.

Still need to get caught up with the comics, I've only read season 8. I've heard the Angel and Faith series (of the Angel comics) is excellent.

If there were some sort of "continuation" I'm not sure how that would work either. Idk, they were going to do that show with Eliza Dushku at the Cleveland hellmouth when Buffy ended but she couldn't do it because of Tru Calling (which tanked).

The Fray was the best thing to come from the comics imo

Honestly the only reason I'm not super stoked about a live action reboot is because I am still low-key holding out for an animated series :(

Like with most continuations of big properties (if this is indeed a continuation) most fans will unfortunately have to settle for the fact that anything from the comics will most likely be ignored, phased out, or at best, loosely referenced. It's just how it goes really.

If I had to guess, I'd say they're going for a reboot with a different cast of characters. The lead may or may not be named Buffy, but the others won't be Willow, Xander, Giles, etc.

You mean, something like the Charmed reboot/revival/whatisit? They keep changing their minds as to how connected they new show seems to be every couple of months. I can't see them really going down that route and doing similar characters but with different names. It would infuriate the fans to no end.

With Jose's name attached to the project I can see them avoiding some pitfalls.

That charmed reboot is a whole other level of weird. There are analysis videos on YouTube and some of the acting is shockingly bad, but I'm not prepared to hate it yet. I loved charmed, even if it felt like a neutered Buffy at the time lol

I wonder just how much of a continuation its going to be. Like will they reference ATS and the comics as well?

I guess we'll just have to wait and see

I don't think there's enough info for me to decide how I feel... was a great Buffy fan back in the day, but lost interest about halfway through Angel. I still have an autographed photo of Giles though :3

I very much doubt that. Those comics have been Joss's baby for over a decade.

For that matter, the continuity of the "Angel: After the Fall" comics wasn't discarded when the Angel license moved from IDW to Dark Horse.

Whedon says the story (of the Dark Horse era) isn't continuing. The new show on the other hand will almost certainly have tie-in comics of it's own.

Yet it's still up in the air whether the new show will have any relationship whatsoever with the old.

What I'm saying is that if this new program is going to be a reboot, the portion of the old show's continuity that includes the comics (which have notably been running for longer than the show was even on TV ...) doesn't automatically get jettisoned just because this license has expired.
