Bugenhagen's Alternate Final Scene

Highlighting and spoiling this video because I've kept it off for far too long already. Granted, I hadn't actually unlocked the scene in its full glory before today, but I've known about it for two years and kept it secret (like so many other things) because I desired a full impact whenever the corresponding Unused Text article would get published.

But screw that. Enough stalling.
LINK: Bugenhagen's Alternate Final Scene

This video will be embedded in Unused Text Part 11. I know the video is slow for the first two minutes, but I wanted to include the used scenes to fully compare with the impact of the alternate draft.

Enjoy. =)

I mod the game using Makou Reactor, which edits the field files.

I doubt a save editor could help unlock this scene. You need to bypass the Plot Progression Value check. If the value is equal to or higher than 1610, the normal Bugenhagen scene will happen. I bypassed this by making the requirement too high (PPV=2100 or higher). Save editors can change a lot of things, including flags in the save, but from what I recall they can't edit plot progression requirements.

Ah, I see. I have used the Black Chocobo save editor and noticed some plot progression stuff, which I do think were just flags to show whether you were at that stage of the game or something. I never really messed with it, I just used the save editor to give myself more money and a gold chocobo. :D I have played the game so many times that raising a gold chocobo AGAIN wasn't something I wanted to do.

Anyway, I wonder if the Bugen scene was going to be used at some point, or if it was just an inside joke with the developers.

I actually LOLed when Bugen's hand fell to his side dramatically, at which Red XIII freaked out, and then Bugen says, "Oh, by the way, take this." :P

Great find! I've been a longtime lurker at TLS. The Unused Text Series is one of my favorite site projects and I'm so excited it's still alive. Mad props, Shademp.

^Gahhhhhh, there's so much unused text that really should have been in there ;-;

I think I prefer a silent Sephiroth for the ending scenarios. He comes off as more godly/out-of-this-world/divine/confident/arrogant that way. I absolutely love that he has this unused text piece, just like I really love Bugenhagen's fake death scene. They are nice what-ifs and act as commentary on the final product. But Sephiroth's monologue is a bit generic villainy "Everything shall begin anew with me!! BLARGH" for my taste, which is why I prefer the final game. =)

I believe I still haven't thanked you, Shademp, for taking the time to "explore" the game and share these findings! So, thank you! :)

Nice work.

Edit: looks like I was wrong. However this area highlighted on this map always looked a bit suspect.

I was just in the debug rooms grabbing some images when I accidentally selected something that took me to the Northern Cave. Since I was there I decided to test something: This might only happen in the PC version (and this is seeming to be the case), but you don't actually have to take the gateway off the get that chest in the unintended room. You can just use the menu-trick. When you pass over a gateway, enter the menu and you stay in the same room.

Thanks JBedford, the thought that the menu-trick could be used here had completely slipped my mind. Many attempts in the PSX version make me conclude that the menu-trick can't be applied to field areas (only the overworld, as observed with the impaled Midgar Zolom scene). Still, I will mention in the article commentary the menu-trick can be used here in the PC version.
