Cid's voice actor is easily the most offensive from AC/C. Mena Suvari was better even.

I tried to deal with the voice acting in AC until I heard "Dilly dally shilly shally". I probably would have been OK with them giving my beloved characters voices if I hadn't already downloaded and watched the Japanese version a few times before I bought the English release.
I literally cannot watch it with the English audio, it drives me mental.
Cid is high on the list of reasons why I can't watch it in English. You're very right. Weak. But "dilly dally shilly shally". Dear god. I wanted to saw my ears off.

Oh, the complaints about dilly dally. I had to wonder if most of those people even knew their own language to be complaining about Dilly Dally.
I agree, it's far from the best translation (I'd go with, y'know, dragging, and make a little rhyme off that, dragging, lagging, no?), but these folks were acting like dilly dally didn't exist.
Also, Cait Sith has the (in universe) fictional backstory of being a fairy tale cat. He's got every reason to be scottish or the local equivalent.
And yes, Cid's VA is quite weak.

OR they could have just rewritten that line instead of shoehorning some horrible onomatopoeia into the script.
At the end of the day, it's Cait Sith, who cares? I was more offended that he had more lines than Red.

The original had some horrible onomatopoeia. The english language version had a children's rhyme version of a common phrase.
I suggest using the literal translation OF said onomatopeia, rendered into a rhyme scheme.
In which case, once again, blame the original version.

But Japanese can get away with using those mimetic phrases more easily than you can in English, many of which have the same kind of rhyming sound that don't sound so out of place. I don't think the rhyming was the main point of the line, and the English version could have gone with something less jarring without necessarily losing the meaning.

They really should have just used something that doesn't sound so fucking stupid. Not only does it make me cringe, it gave me supreme redface when my old flatmate walked in on me watching it and overheard the line. I had to do a pornslam with the laptop and then explain about the hardships of translation for half an hour, and I'm still not sure my cool points recovered from it. Probably more to do with the porn slam.
Why not just "drifting, drifting" in a dreamy voice? I mean double eff ess.
In other news, I just played through the OG for the millionth time, and actually loved every minute of it. I usually get bored around the huge materia part and stop. Aerith's face at the very end made me tear up like it used to. Sad it's over.
Also made me realise that Cait isn't half as unnecessary a character as some people seem to think he is. He's a bit stupid pre- Temple of the Ancients, but beyond that he actually makes a lot of sense. Perhaps because Cait Sith 2 was reprogrammed

"Dragging, dragging, always dragging." Fits the syllables of the line flawlessly, keeps the metaphor for the feeling lighter bit, and it is certainly what they should have done. That said, people get way too fuckin bent out of shape over that line, imo.
I've shown the movie to plenty of "outsiders," and not one has ever commented on that. They'll comment on other silly things, largely Cloud's hair or the crazy jumping. Some of them have even commented on the dialogue, but no one ever mentions that line. It only ever seems to be people that saw it in Japanese first that care.
And as an aside, how the hell does "zuru zuru" sound like dragging?

No they don't. It's the stupidest god damn fucking line in the history of dubs, including 4kids bullshit. Whoever wrote it deserves to die a horrible death in front of all of us so we can point and laugh and anyone who disagrees is a huge giant gaping butt hole.

I noticed this earlier too, I just didn't bother adding it since I've already given it a place in the "CANON OF FFVII" section I've made, so this old index page will be superfluous. The translations are placed there in page order, btw. Hopefully you'll all get to see it in a few weeks.

More a case that you misunderstood what I typed. My point was extending to the fact Cait Sith had more dialogue than Red, regardless of what he sounds like. It wasn't actually a jab at the dub for that, more the bigger picture.
Masa was certainly not doing that.
The point of translating from one language to another in media terms is convey the intent from the original language into a way that sounds natural to the foreign viewer (in this case, us). That does of course mean that equivalence has to be sacrificed for the simple fact that English & Japanese are NOT interchangeable languages. There are obviously cultural nuances that have to be considered. Seeing as Japanese is more of a phonetic language with a common use of onomatopoeia, the modality of the line is completely congruent with the native audience. This, however, is something that has to be considered in the translation process, and a competent director would have known how to best to interpret that line for us Westerners. You can't blame the original Japanese for that, no more than you can blame it for the rest of the clunky dialogue in the dub.
