I love Cid from FF7. He's easily my favorite character in the main FF7 party.

But compared to everyone else, I don't know a damn thing about him. His biography is kinda lacking compared to everyone elses, which pretty much just says "LIKES MACHINES-GOOD AT PILOTING-SWEARS A LOT". Even Vincent, the guy who's supposed to be all mysterious, has more background information known than Cid.

So come on, inform me, whatcha got?

Huh? He has as much backstory as anyone else.

He grew up in Rocket Town, and as a kid, he always wanted to be a pilot. Signed up for Shinra's Space Program at 27, underwent training and became the one to pilot the Shinra 26 at 28. Sierra was his faithful assistant who he cared about. He was also an airship designer, creating the Highwind which Shinra "borrowed" from him and also the Tiny Bronco. He was the de facto leader of Rocket Town.

Then shit went bad when he was about to Rocket off into space, and he had to stop the launch to save Sierra's life, which fostered a deep resentment towards her, because he felt she was the one who ruined his dream. Then he met Cloud, etc etc, and with the Huge Materia quest, they went onboard the Shinra 26 and he realized Sierra was right when she said the oxygen tank *was* faulty and thus her words saved his life and he finally got to realize his dream.

I mean, what else do you want to know? Vincent hardly has as much backstory than him in FFVII, given we don't even know Vincent'sbirthplace, what he did before he joined Shinra, or of any family.

I agree with Mako.

Really, Cid has a lot, it just doesn't feel like it. With Vincent, multiple events are explained in-depth, making it feel like we know tons about him. A lot of this has to do with the fact that he has his own game (two if you count DoC:LE). Cid doesn't. Would we know more about him if he did? Probably. But I doubt he will, considering nothing is bothering him in particular. He's married and has a ship. He isn't connected to Genesis in any way. There isn't anything he has to overcome.

I guess so. I just wanted to know more about him like what it was like/events that happened as a kid, his parentage (did he get a passion for mechanics from a family member, brother or a father? That would be interesting to know). Teen years, young adulthood, etc His rise to the top of Shinra's Aeronautics department, how he designed the Highwind, etc.

I guess I take back that Cid got SHAFTED per se, but I guess I just want to know more about him.

(also FF7 makes it seem like Rocket Town grew around the rocket and wasn't there before)

Exactly Mog, that's driven me nuts about the Ultimania, how the hell could Cid have been born in Rocket Town if it didn't exist yet?

And this isn't an "Ancients were interstellar pirates" translation error either, the scene clearly shows the rocket's failed launch and THEN the town fades in around it. And even if it DID exist, why would it be called Rocket Town before there was a rocket?

Maybe it wasn't called Rocket Town back then, but became known as 'Rocket Town' later on (like the slums in Midgar). Or that the town did exist before, but no so close to the rocket, and after the failed launch they gradually moved the buildings closer to it.

I vote for the "renamed rocket town, stuff started cropping up around the rocket" idea. Interestingly, there were 26 of the ShinRa rockets, so it's quite possible that 'Rocket town' is actually built around a series of rocket launchpads, with Cid's area being the newest of the bunch.
