A certain forum post reminded me of this question, and I was curious as to if this was an elaborated plot-point or something left to fan speculation.
We all know Cloud left Nibelheim to become a SOLDIER, both out of admiration for Sephiroth and the hope of impressing Tifa. Now, we all know he never made SOLDIER and was only an MP - and here we reach the part I'm uncertain about.
To my memory, Cloud never made SOLDIER because he failed some sort of psychological test - as Mako showers are only effective on the strong-willed. So therefore it would be assumed that Cloud's low self-esteem and self-confidence prevented him from entering the organization.
However, the very sparse moments where the topic is broached in Crisis Core usually have Zack encouraging Cloud to try to become a SOLDIER, and to hold on to his dream. This seems to suggest that 1.) Cloud was rejected from SOLDIER but could re-apply, 2.) Cloud had yet to apply, or 3.) Cloud had already been rejected and Zack was merely trying to encourage him. Characteristic of someone who believes in trying even when the situation seems hopeless.
Now, I realize some of my questions may even have been answered in the course of the Compilation, but fact and fanon have been muddled for so long in my head that I can't honestly recall what I know happened and what I'm merely assuming to be true.
