Dead Island

First heard about this game like, back before the original Dead Rising came out. There were a few screenshots and pretty sure there was a video showing off the environment (walking around in-game, no enemies, etc.). I had thought it was cancelled but apparently not.

Love the trailer. heart strings got plucked and it does a good job of giving off a sense of vulnerability, and since it's supposed to be a survival game, woo hoo.
From what I remember one of the main selling points of the game (back then at least) was that you could pick up and use anything as a weapon. Tho who knows how much that has changed since then.

I hadn't heard anything about this game but boy that trailer looked incredible. This pleases me.

And probably Dacon too.

The further the trailer went along, the more depressed I got watching it. TAT

Seems pretty interesting, though.

Wow, so it WAS still in development. Here's hoping they keep a strong focus on survival and horror.

It has been a while since we were last marooned on Dead Island back at the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo. Now we're back again alongside developer Techland for another brisk outing in its zombie apocalypse, armed with a wooden boat oar and a pocketful of experience points. Our own personal hell: a tropical paradise turned tropical wasteland brimming with death and beautifully rendered in the same engine as Call of Juarez. We recently sat down to watch a demonstration of what it's like to go face-to-face with the walking dead in this gruesome first-person brawler…armed with little more than a oar.

This massive island of death is yours to explore, but at your own peril.
Dead Island is all about getting extremely up close and personal with hordes of zombies. Your arsenal is a near-endless supply of mundane items scattered across the ravaged island, including wooden oars, machetes, and the occasional gun or two. If you're feeling creative, you can combine certain items to make powerful new weapons, a la Dead Rising 2, provided you have the right blueprints. Once you have armed yourself with the deadliest vacation items imaginable, it's time to take the fight to the horde. You can fight in one of two ways--we saw both styles in action with an Xbox 360 gamepad. The first, analog, uses one analog stick for movement and the other for arm control. This unique setup looks like it will take some getting used to, but it does allow you more control over the strength and arc of each swing. The second, digital, is a more-traditional setup that will be familiar to anyone who has played console action games. The analog sticks are dedicated to movement, while all the attacks are mapped to the face buttons.

The four unlucky people you will be controlling are described as a leader, a tank, an assassin, and a jack-of-all-trades. Each of these characters brings something unique to the profession of zombie killing and can be further specialized by leveling up and progressing down one of three skill trees. The leader, for instance, can be specialized to boost his party's performance or maximize his effectiveness with the island's limited gun supply. Techland wants to give you plenty of options for dealing with the deceased by loading up each character with plenty of active skills. These skills can then be used in concert with other player's skills to devastating effect, such as using the tank's ability to knock enemies prone followed by the assassin's ability to quickly slay foes.

Our brief demo opened with a man shouting in our character's face. We had awoken in a tiny shack and were instantly aware that something terrible had happened. Apart from the man shouting, we could hear a woman's cries in the distance and some otherworldly growl issuing from beyond the shack's thin walls. Our character quickly discovered that no one here had any idea what was going on. Determined to figure this out, the character snatched up a nearby metal pipe and turned to face whatever was happening outside. Beyond the doorway's illusion of safety, two men were struggling to keep a pack of zombies from clawing their way inside. Without a moment's hesitation, our character plunged into the fray, striking wildly at every rotting face within arm's reach.

Slaying the undead requires a personal touch.
Every swing of our character's arm carried with it numerous consequences. Most apparent were the gruesome cuts and gashes that we were carving on our victims. The game's damage modeling seems extensive and, in a twisted way, very satisfying. Each enemy has a health bar and a stamina bar. Draining all of an enemy's health will kill it, while draining its stamina will only incapacitate it temporarily. Our hero also had his own health and stamina bars, and as he fought, our stamina began to drain, which resulted in less-damaging attacks. His pipe, which had entered this battle straight and clean, had also degraded into a bent, gore-covered mess. Normal weapons will degrade with use and eventually break unless repaired at a workbench, but the aforementioned pipe was not so fortunate.

The last zombie finally fell just as we were approaching our limits. However, it was obvious that even with the immediate threat neutralized the survivors wouldn't be able to hold out long in this simple hut. They would need to be moved, and to do that we received our first quest to locate a key card needed to open up a larger facility. The quest structure in Dead Island is being designed to flow at your own pace. The entirety of the island will be open from the start, and you can stick to the main quest line or explore this open world and deviate down the numerous side quests as you see fit. However, just before we set out, a sudden flash, a vision, dropped us in yet another unfamiliar surrounding. Computer monitors lined the walls around us, and an ominous, booming voice growled questions at us. Were we willing to kill? Who were we willing to kill? What if it were someone we loved? And with that, the vision ended, just as abruptly as it had begun.

After our character's senses cleared, we realized that a man nearby was barricaded inside his truck, and that a pack of zombies was about to flip it faster than a horde of drunk teenagers on spring break. Our character entered the fight armed with a wooden oar and, after a brief skirmish, left with a bloody, wooden stump. To show his gratitude for being rescued, the man took us to a workbench where we happened upon some blueprints for an electric machete. It just so happens that our character had picked up a machete on our way here, and after rummaging through a few boxes, he produced some tape, batteries, and wire. The resulting combination sliced and diced just like before but could now also stun enemies for a brief time.

Armed with this new weapon, our character quickly racked up enough experience to level up. With that new level came new skills--in this case, the ram skill, which let the character charge through crowds of undead, and the payback skill, which increased his stamina when his health was low. The road to the key card was a long one, and it quickly became apparent that our lone hero didn't have the stamina to fight off an entire island of undead on his own. After collecting the tiny slip of plastic, he ended up putting the ram skill through its paces as he charged toward the potential safe house the card was designed to unlock. Any hopes of rest and reprieve were quickly shattered when the metal shutters opened to reveal a massive, hulking zombie within. Fade to black…this is where our demo ended.

Special zombies, such as this straightjacket-wearing tank, will be a lot tougher to take down.
In the twisted world of Dead Island, you and your cohorts are not superheroes. You're just ordinary people placed in extraordinary circumstances, not unlike the unfortunate protagonists found in some of the game's inspirations--including the Walking Dead graphic novels and the Lost television series. More than headshots or bunny hops, the most important skill to master is conservation. You'll need to spend your energy wisely to make the most of it before having to fall back and rest up. And all the joys of zombie slaying can be enjoyed with up to three friends through drop-in, drop-out online cooperative play. Round up all your survival gear, grab your sturdiest boat oar, and prepare to set sail for Dead Island on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC later this year.

Dead Island shocked the world upon its return after a three year hiatus with a gorgeous cinematic trailer that placed us right in the middle of the action as a family fought for their lives against a bloodthirsty zombie horde on an island resort. The reverse story progression and its heart wrenching musical complement struck an emotional chord among gamers in a way that rivals short films. Dead Island's announcement trailer came out of left field and secured a spot on our radar as a game that has the potential, if executed well, to prove you can never have too many zombie games.

Call of Juarez developer Techland takes players to the Royal Palms Resort on Banoi Island, a fictional exotic locale stationed in Papua New Guinea that attracts tourists worldwide. Players check into the Chinese hotel chain for a few days in paradise, but soon things begin to go awry. Aggression prevails as guests attack other guests, infecting them in a breakout that spreads like wildfire, and different mutations emerge for a variety of grotesque zombie classes. Only a handful of survivors will remain and among those is your character. To escape the island un-mauled, you'll have to figure out the secret to immunity and get to the bottom of the gruesome situation.

Dead Island is a first person "zombie-slasher/action-RPG" reminiscent of undead splatter films. The only way to survive is to engage in the fight for your life. There is a single player campaign, or up to four friends can seamlessly join the fray in drop in/drop out cooperative mode online.

The main character in Dead Island is an everyman that requires creativity to fight with everyday items. Combat focuses heavily on melee, so whichever items in the world that can be used as a weapon of destruction, be it a pipe, broomstick, or paddle, is fair game. Despite the emphasis on melee, players will ocassionally recieve access to firearms, however ammunition like in any horror game is a rare find. Use it wisely. Not to mention, melee weapons can degrade or break after extensive use, so resource management is key. If you become fond of a particular item you'll have the option to repair it at select workbench locations.

In regard to RPG elements, Dead Island will feature a leveling system and skill tree helping the player grow as a zombie slaying machine over the course of the game, providing new tactics, new character animations, and boosts in stats.

Dead Island is due out for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC later this year. In the meantime, feast your eyes on the media gallery below for another look at the zombie slaying action.

Trailer's impressive. I get the impression it is not connected to any franchise? If so, sounds like it'll be a fresh look at the whole zombie survival concept. Other stuff I've heard about it makes it sound promising.

Curious as to why they chose Papua New Guinea as a location though. The game play screens don't shout PNG at me. I wonder if the developers actually holidayed there for research or simply threw a dart at a map and said "That's where the game is set". A chinese hotel franchise in PNG? Now that is completely random. I suspect they went "Oh, its near China, so China must be involved somehow!" I'm no expert in PNG stuff, but a little research could've made this more convincing.

My other curiosity is if why is there a health bar? I thought this zombie thing was an infectious disease, or does it only take over if you die?

Seems that this trailer has gotten so popular so quickly that even the guys who draw the web comic Critical Miss over at the Escapist took a page from it:

When the recent trailer for Dead Island was released, Deep Silver had no idea that it would become such a massive phenomenon. It generated a lot of buzz and hype for a game we’ve only heard bits and pieces about for the last four years. As we all know, this could have just as easily been a burden as it could have been a gift. It’s great to have people so excited about your game, but it’s also important to be in a place where you can truly deliver. During the final day of GDC I was lucky enough to get a brief demonstration of Dead Island, and a glimpse into what we can expect when the game is released.

Upon entering the room where Dead Island was to be demonstrated, I was struck by the thematically gory décor. Bloody handprints stained a woven mat covering the floor, a tossed-over chair lay stagnant in the corner, a streak of blood caked the wall beside me, and a lamp with a mangled shade contributed a dim light to the small area. The stage was perfectly set.

Before we were shown a quick play-through of one part of the game, we were told a little bit about what the game itself would be like. You will be tasked with various missions – some optional ones given to you by survivors, and some that are a part of the main quest – throughout the course of Dead Island. If you do the core missions and a few of the sidequests, you can expect the experience to last about 20-30 hours. It wasn’t said how long the game would be were you to pursue every side quest available, but the open world aspect of the game means that there will likely be plenty of things to do and plenty of places to see.

THIS IS A POPULAR ZOMBIE TACTIC. THEY PRETEND THEY'RE ABOUT TO SNEEZE, BUT REALLY THEY'RE ABOUT TO EAT YOU.
The game will also a boast an online co-op mode that enables your friends to come and go throughout your play-through of the game. Unfortunately, there are currently no plans for a local multiplayer or co-op mode.

There are four characters available to choose from at the start of the game, but we were shown the exploits of Sam B., a one-hit wonder rapper who has come to the island to perform. The demonstation started with him slowly opening his eyes to find a man standing over him holding onto a baseball bat. It turns out Sam B. was just rescued by another survivor, and the man in front of him is anxious to confirm that Sam is not one of the undead. When he finally nods his head and proves once and for all that he’s human, Sam quickly finds out that the man who saved him is outside doing his best to fight off the zombie hordes. Be it bravery or a sense of indebtedness, he quickly grabs a paddle – the very first weapon of the game – and heads out to help.

AN ELECTRIC CURRENT COMPLIMENTS THE MACHETE QUITE WELL.
The story will open the same way for all characters, and will flesh out in the same way as well. Each of them carries a different backstory, though, and a vastly different personality. The story may progress the same for all of them, but there is one major thing that sets them all apart: they are all host to a different skill set and cavalcade of powers. There will be a leveling-up system in place that enables you to strengthen your respective abilities and acquire new ones as well. All four characters will be of a different class, and these break down into the Assassin, the Jack-of-all-Trades, the Tank, and the Leader. Sam is of the Tank variety, and he possesses a lot of raw power. To show off one of the Tank’s special abilities, a move known as “fury” was initiated. When it activated, the entire screen went black and white and the zombies themselves were shown with a strong reddish hue all around them. At this point, Sam began taking zombies down with the sheer power of his fists.

As is common in most modern games where zombies are the main enemy, there will be different factions with different abilities. The island will be home to the classic slow zombies, vomiting zombies, exploding zombies, running zombies, and quite possibly even more.
While most horror games contain an eerie atmosphere, the island of Banoi is vibrant and lush with a bright ocean sprawled out as far as the eye can see. If not for the bodies strewn about and zombies eager to sink their teeth into you, it would be a pretty beautiful sight. That’s only when you’re outside, though. Many of the indoor facilities will be dimly-light or altogether pitch black, meaning you’ll have to whip out your flashlight and trudge through the undead in hiding. We weren’t shown a lot of this in the demo, but it was mentioned that there would definitely be points in the game where you have the light of day there to help you.

When the door of the safe house was opened, there were already zombies prepared to attack. Because the game is in a first person view, there are going to be a lot of points where zombies will be right in your face. As the demo progressed, Sam quickly made his way along the seaside. The paddle looks to be an effective weapon for taking zombies out, but stomping on their heads when they’re down is a surefire way to confirm the kill.

As the demonstrators fought their way through the zombies, they mentioned that, aside from staying alive, one of the key motivations behind taking down the zombies is to secure various safe points for the survivors in the game. When you clear a path to another safe area, they will quickly come over and set up station there. Each survivor possesses a back story of their own, and their motives vary as well. Some of them will be there to exploit the situation by selling things overpriced, and others will simply be aiming to stay alive. Regardless of their motive, they’re going to rely on you for help. Due to a reason that is as of now unknown, you’re immune to becoming a zombie. You can die, but you aren’t capable of transforming into a member of the walking dead.

YOU CAN TRY POLITELY ASKING THEM TO MOVE, BUT BULLETS SEEM TO BE A LITTLE MORE EFFECTIVE.
Survivors are going to rely on you for help, and this is where quite a few of the game’s quests will come from. An example we were told about (but not shown) is that one character on the island is trying to fix up a vehicle. Should you help with that, you’ll then gain the access to drive it.

Throughout the course of Dead Island, you will be able to repair your damaged weapons and create new ones at work stations scattered throughout. We were shown things like the electric machete and sticky grenades, but the list of different weapons will likely be an extensive one. Due to the way weapons will deteriorate over time, it’s clear that players will need to strategize about how and when they use them.

Dead Island is first and foremost an action game. Even so, running away from zombies is sometimes an advisable course of action. If you’re without a strong weapon, or at a point where you need to repair the one in your possession, attempting to avoid the onslaught of zombies for a time is the best way to survive.

SHE'S MOMENTS AWAY FROM AXING THEM A FATAL QUESTION.
Ultimately, Dead Island looks to be a potent mixture of fresh ideas as well as varied elements from zombie games prior. If what was shown in the brief demo is a microcosm of what the full game will be, then the bar for what makes a good zombie game is well on its way to being raised.

Besides, everyone knows a palm tree frond couldn't actually support the weight of a hanging body. I like my zombie games to be scientifically sound, tyvm.

But yeah, can't say I'm that surprised they pulled the art. Between suicides and lynchings there's a lot of sensitivity around hanging. I agree that the lack of floating "I" makes the title harder to read, though.

Yeah, cant say I blame them. Imagine a 7yr old going to the video game section and seeing the silhouette of a hanged man while browsing the games.

I love zombie games, but I am beyond tired of this shit. I don't just wanna bulldoze through zombie hordes like Rambo. It's fucking boring. I like zombies because it's supposed to be, uh, horror. You know, scary because they're supposed to be super hard to kill and most normal people wouldn't be able to toss throwing stars or whatever the hell to defend themselves.

I like games like Left 4 Dead and all, it's fun, but goddamn I miss feeling genuine suspense and fear rather than just repeatedly bashing skulls in.

It probably won't be a bad game but eeeh, just not what I'm looking for.
