Square-Enix has been striving to expand well beyond Japanese boundaries this generation and in speaking to VentureBeat, head man Yoichi Wada explains the company's movement.
In addition to predicting the eventual end of "retail video games," Wada spoke about the aim and inherent difficulty of targeting a worldwide gaming population, which of course boasts different tastes and ethnicities. He also said that despite the attempts of some Japanese publishers to "globalize," the strategy didn't work because it remained mostly Japanese in nature. In fact, Wada cites several major companies that tried to expand to a global market and thus far, he believes no one - including Western publishers trying to cater to the Japanese - has succeeded.
"We have to appeal to customers with different preferences. Sega did not succeed. Konami did not succeed. Namco Bandai did not succeed. Western publishers have not succeeded in selling in Japan. Nobody has succeeded at globalization. But it hasn’t succeeded because it was always based on Japanese direction. It was Japanese people who commissioned the Western developers to make games."
Wada goes on to mention the recent purchase of Eidos and that by "becoming part of the family," there's a general melding going on. Eidos isn't a "slave" to Square-Enix; the studio is treated "as completely equal as the studio in Japan" and in the end, it's Square-Enix's goal to create a business environment "where completely different ethnic groups can coexist in the same company." And then, he said something that we know long-time fans of Square won't particularly like (although it won't come as any big surprise):
"It is important that what’s in America should be handled by Americans. The same goes in Europe and in Japan. These people who are deeply rooted in their own cultures can engage in their own dialogues. The mistakes I have seen so far are when Japanese people try to do everything the Japanese way, using Japanese workers in different areas of the world."
That, right there. Is this not the single biggest mistake Square-Enix continues to make? Isn't this what we've been screaming about the entire generation? Isn't this exactly what I said? Who wants to start up a petition that tells Square-Enix that not all Westerners always require distinctly Western games, especially when we all grew up with Japanese games?!

What the fuck is this shit? Konami has been wildly successful in the west and japan with MGS, same with Capcom and Resident Evil.

Keep making excuses for your failure you stupid shit.

Thanks Square. With this, East and West will finally meet as one when they pick up your latest gaming shit stain off the bargain game bin for 10 dollars.

Yoichi Wada needs to lay off the loli and get some cultural exposure, before The Bouncer becomes the standard of all SE games to date. He has no fucking clue who his consumer base is or wants. Ignorant bastard.

Wow, sounds like somebody sure has a high opinion of themselves. Instead of him saying stuff like this, he should really try doing his job and making better games.

Just yet another leak in a sinking ship. Either SE will shape up or ship out, and someone else will fill in the vacuum and take their place. I'd really rather not see S-E go out like a bunch of chumps, but this dude refuses to learn. It's like Wada is autistic or something, and refuses to actually step outside his office to see what's really going on.

I remember a few years ago there was a rumour that FFXII would be the last title in the series.

Perhaps that was a cryptic premonition of what was to come.

It should've been. It clearly was the last game S-E knew how to make towns and shit for before they inexplicably lost their BALLS in terms of game development.

I think I must have had some kind of brain failure reading that and lost what he was trying to say. Only Americans should make games for Americans? Is that it? idgi.

I want to pretend Wada doesn't work at Square anymore.

Yeah I can’t imagine that such a long stream of idiocy from its CEO is doing anything good for Square Enix’s stock prices.

Square-Enix needs better direction. Replace Wada.

I'd like to know what the S-E employees think about him...

Wasn't there something about certain employees being displeased with him or making comments? I'm sure there was something with Kitase a while back.

Actually, Square Enix's stock has been going down, down, down for a while now.

But as for their actual profits, well...

It's pretty conflicting, because Wada continues to say dumb shit, but the company continues to make money. A fucking boatload of money.

Eventually after enough people realise how fucking stupid the person running their company is, I predict they’re probably going to cease to make fucking boatloads of money. Although I suppose it’s entirely possible that not enough people actually bother reading gaming journalism to have any idea about this kind of crap. That’s pretty much the only hope for Square Enix at this point.

Not me, no sir.

YOU WOULD THINK at first though, I assume you're looking forward to Deus Ex 3, as I am? And I also assume that you plan to purchase it if you can, and if the game is good (which it seems like it will be). Square Enix is getting some of the dough, and you can bet that some of that dough is going to the "Let's make stupid fucking games" fund.

See, it's a bit tricky when it's like that, yeah?

Part of the issue, I think, is lack of competition. I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed a connection between the drop of quality in Square and the merger with Enix. Getting rid of your competition almost always means a drop of quality. Competition is vital to quality. Making sure you're better than the other guy is a basic building block in human progress in general, much less business and video games, which is why Square merging with their single biggest rival, Enix, pretty much damned the company into having the license to produce shit.

"Do you like Dragon Quest? That's fine, but when you buy the game, that money goes to Square as well, so you pretty much have no choice but to accept our shitty games when we feel like making them!"

Combined with the fact that many other RPG companies, I guess, just sort of stopped making them (when's the last time you've heard of a new Breath of Fire/Wild Arms/Lunar/Grandia title? Oh right not in a long ass time), there aren't any more hard choices for RPG fans anymore.

It's pretty much, if you want to play a JRPG made in this decade, you almost have to turn to Square Enix, and if you don't like it, too fucking bad, because there aren't any more. Square Enix feels that they don't have to risk their necks making games like Brave Fencer Musashi, the Chrono series, the Mana series, etc etc, because there's absolutely no alternative for gamers. They feel safe making a million KH games and a million FF spinoffs because gamers literally have no choice.

Gone are the days in which Square and Enix, and other companies battled it out for the favor of consumers. Nowadays it's either "Us or bust." The only thing I can think of is if another Japanese developer came out of nowhere and started busting out quality games enough to threaten S-E, or if Konami/Capcom/Atlus/etc got up off their asses and paid attention to their own RPG franchises.

Yeah basically. Lack of competition completely destroys the quality of an industry’s products, which is probably exactly why I haven’t felt like playing a new JRPG for ages.
