So this is happening, DMC series by the dude who produced Castlevania on Netflix

Shankar, in an exclusive interview with IGN's Jacki Jing, also revealed that his Devil May Cry series “will join Castlevania in what we’re now calling the bootleg multiverse.”

While Shankar didn't give us any specifics in terms of what this all means for the series' overall story, he did inform us that he "acquired these (Devil May Cry) rights myself so the jabronis in Hollywood don’t f*** this one up too."

Interesting because there already is an official DMC anime that I believe is considered canon. I thought the anime was a bit boring though, if Castlevania is any indication I could like this take more.

Oh yes! I loved DMC (still do!) and am thrilled they're doing this! I think I saw the DMC anime and it was alright, but I'm hoping this is so much better. Considering what they did for Castlevania, I do have high hopes. ^^

If the animation is anything like Castlevania though, it'll suck. This needs to be done by a proper Japanese animation studio, who know how to do engaging and action rich animation. I don't have high expectations.

Wait, what? What's wrong with Castlevania's animation? Also, why would the country of the studio in change have an impact on the animation?

Animation in a show is mostly a result of budget, focus, and initial design style. Despite Castlevania being made largely from animation companies in the US & Korea – a lot of professional animators actually work as freelancers for studios all over the world. Many of the ones who worked on Castlevania also work on various shows by Japanese studios – especially when it comes the shows' scenes that involve a lot of action animation.

Even big Japanese animation studios draw on an incredibly wide range of freelancing talent to help out for things like that. One of the best recent examples of that is from the Naruto sequel series Boruto in Episode #65. That had a TON of different freelance animators working on it, and they very frequently all share each other's work on Twitter after the episode airs to help showcase how they all come together to make the final product.

If you bounce through just a couple of their Twitter accounts, you'll very quickly find a lot of different animators all sharing a tiny piece of some scenes for an episode that they blocked out roughs for, did water/fire animation for, etc. and then other animators who did more final versions of those scenes – and they're all from all over the place:

I think Cthulhu point is that the (action) animation for this shows needs to resemble something this to do the "Devil May Cry" name justice:

As good as Castlevania animation was, it is not close to what many fans think is DMC stylish action.

I'd just argue that Castlevania's action is different by nature of what the show is doing and what it's based on to begin with. I don't think that it's at all related to being run by a US studio. Also, Castlevania wasn't just a single studio thing either. It was the long-standing USA animation studios of Frederator Studios & Powerhouse Animation Studios, working along with the studios developed specifically as a part of Castlevania: Shankar Animation, Project 51 Productions, & Mua Film. That talent comes from all over the place, based on what they need for a project and who they're hiring.

Essentially, DMC going to them shows that the creators have faith in HOW they'll adapt the story's content. I wouldn't expect the animation to be limited to just what Castlevania produced any more than I'd expect Castlevania to look like Fairly Odd-Parents just because Frederator Studios was involved.

*has war flashbacks of the DMC anime*

......(okay, actually, I really liked the DMC anime: it was animated by Madhouse, and Madhouse does quality animation, so :monster:)

I haven't had the chance to watch the Castevania series on Netflix (gonna try and convince my friends to bingewatch together when we burn through our current queue of things to watch), but from what I've seen of the animation and art style: I liiiiiiiiiiiiike, so I have faith that at the very least, if DMC is gonna be animated in the same style as Castlevania, at least it would be enjoyable to watch.

As for the story of DMC, well....I dunno Adi Shankar's other works so well, so I guess I'd have to wait and see. (but the fact that he said that he "acquired these (Devil May Cry) rights myself so the jabronis in Hollywood don’t f*** this one up too." does kinda reassure me that he'll keep Dante and friends in character.) I don't really expect the animated series to add anything new to the game canon, but it would work out well if the story was a standalone kind of thing.

........unless this is an adaptation of DmC. In that case, no thank you to all of that, I'd only hatewatch while drunk.

I don't like Castlevania's animation because most of it reminds me of 60's cartoons. There's just no life in it; it's mostly people standing still while talking, then shifting to a different pose, but never talking and moving at the same time. The whole thing feels forced too, bad jokes, forced characterization / "lightness", etc. Might just be me having become a grumpy old man off course, :monster:.
