Actually her cowgirl outfit from Crisis Core has a short skirt AND cleavage, which is why I was nitpicking that girls cowgirl Tifa outfit because it was clearly the Crisis Core version and yet it lacked cleavage. If I see a Tifa cosplay with cleavage and it's not the CC outfit or her Wall Market dress, you can expect me to nitpick it.

The CC version still doesn't show cleavage it's just lower cut than her FF7 tank top. Face it, your nitpicking in this case is dumb.

Best. Cosplay. EVER!!!!

Okay this pretty much IS Rude. I approve ten million times.
FemRemo - not so much.

I'm pretty sure it's not femme, it's crossplay.(Femme is doing a female version of the character, crossplay is dressing as a male to protray a male character). I think she does Reno pretty well, the outfit and wig are accurate. She can't help she wasn't born a dude.

My two cents on cosplay and body type. To me it doesn't matter if the cosplayer matches the character exactly. One of my best friends is African American and she does the characters she likes, regardless of that characters's race. This is her as Fran.

She may have a darker skin tone than the character, but that cosplay is amazing. She's had to put up with a lot of racism when it comes to cosplay, even when cosplaying darker skinned characters like Avatar Korra. I think it shouldn't matter.

On the same vein I don't think it should matter if you match the gender of your character. Yes, it's difficult to completely pass and I appreciate male cosplayers. All the same, I think Nanjokoji is one the best cosplayers out there and she's a crossplayer.

Her Sephiroth is AMAZING.

So then if gender and race don't matter, what about body type.

Cosplay is fanart made flesh, so on one level it's good to match your character as much as possible physically.

There are cosplayers who lose weight, gain muscle, and endure a lot to match their characters. My husband wears a tight laced corset when he cosplays Axel from Kingdom Hearts because the character's waist is tiny, and as a crossplayer with an hour glass figure let me tell you binding is not comfortable.

So to a certain degree, a part of cosplay is having your body fit as much as possible. It's part of the art as much as the costume, wig and make up.

However, I don't think body type necessarily should be an absolute restriction. Because at the end of the day, getting a boob job for a cosplay is a bit extreme and when cosplaying video game characters you're cosplaying body ideals that don't exist in reality. If you try to aspire to that, you're going to give yourself body image issues.

I know this from
I cosplay Aqua from Kingdom Hearts. I chose the character in part because her body type matches mine (she giant hips, just like me, yay), but she also has very long skinny legs. I have thighs, they sort of go with giant butt. I'm at a healthy weight, but I have thighs. And what I found was looking at the reference picture constantly while designing my costume, it's hard to keep yourself from comparing what your body looks like rather than what your costume. I honestly felt really nervous/uncomfortable when I did the cosplay because I didn't think I was pretty enough.

So I'm a bit leery about critiquing cup size. It's cosplay, it's about the costume and artistry of the costume. That Tifa cosplayer is great. The costume, which she likely made herself, is beautiful and detailed and the photography is excellent. Those are great backdrops are great and the lighting is perfect.

And we're complaining that she's not showing cleavage while cosplaying a fifteen year old (in the case of the cow girl cosplay).

Also, I want to point out, cosplayers are not actresses or models (well some also happen to be) but as far cosplaying goes you can't cast the character by picking someone based on body type that fits perfectly. You're limited by your own body type, and not everyone is built like a play boy bunny. We're also, not porn stars, cosplaying isn't supposed to be about our bodies.

Yeah, fitting the character is nice and all, but if the costume looks good and fits your body type i.e. looks good on you, then it doesn't matter if you're too fat, too skinny, too busty or too flat, you look good. I think it's a bit ridiculous to hold cosplayers to standard of beauty that literally doesn't exist.

Are we really going to say that the photoshop of a porn star makes a better Tifa than the girl who put all that effort into making that costume and portraying her character through amazing shots.

As for the likelihood of a Tifa cosplayer having the perfect body type, I agree with this:

The women who have that bodytype
The women of said bodytype who play FF7
The women of said bodytype/gamers who are interested in cosplaying Tifa

And will also add that even women of said bodytype who play FF7 and are interested in cosplaying Tifa, might still not cosplay Tifa precisely because they don't want to do a cosplay where the only thing people notice is their chest. Not their craftsmanship or handwork, just their cleavage.

There are also other
which I will go over momentarily, and some girls crossplay to avoid these issues. First of all, let me say that for the most part, I don't think crossplaying is common because of these issues, it's popular because there are a lot of male characters and girls who like those characters. (The thing about cosplay is it's not like casting a play or a film where you would portray whatever role you fit physically, it's about portraying a character you love. Yeah, I'm a girl, I could do Elena better than Rufus, I cosplay Rufus because he's my favoriate character).

However, some crossplayers will crossplay to avoid the sexual harassment and sexism (being called a slut or a fake nerd whose only doing it for the attention) that unfortunately can go along with doing certain female characters. I have friends who have endured all kinds of things of that nature, one of them refuses to cosplay female characters anymore because it's more comfortable to do males because you don't have these issues. (Although not physically comfortable, she as 38 double ds so binding is pain).

I was at a video game convention/conference thing last year where I saw a black Tifa. The costume was perfect and she looked pretty damn good.

I'm not asking her (or you, for that matter, since you cosplay dudes) to become a man. I was just stating I didn't like that cosplay as much as the Rude one. I'd never heard of femme being used in this context, so when I said FemReno it was a way of referring to 'obvious girl in a Reno costume'. But that's the thing - I don't know much about cosplays so I'm looking at this thing as an outsider. Basically I don't really care much for cosplays. But that's because what I see, is the pictures. What people cosplaying see, is the whole thing about socializing and sharing and the hard work of finding good fabrics for costumes etc. So for me (and others who are ignorant and know nothing of cosplaying), that's a girl in a Reno costume. Sorry. :P

I hope I didn't come across as too strident, if I did I apologize. It's just that to me FemReno sounds like Reno who is meant to look female when to me the costume looks male (she's binding and dressed as a guy). I wouldn't say Nanjokoji's Sephiroth is FemSephiroth, it's Sephiroth and it's a good representation of Sephiroth. (Seriously, once DA is working again, I recommend everyone check out her gallery).

Of course welcome to like or dislike cosplays, I like the Rude cosplayer too, although I can't fault anything with the Reno's costume. However, I do acknowledge that sometimes a guy can pull off a cosplay better than a girl.

For example,
My friend Angel (Kidofmischief on Tumblr) made an amazing Avenger's Loki cosplay. She lent her costume to her friend Sylar, who's tiny enough to fit into it. The pictures of Sylar as Loki blew up, front page of DA, the Daily What, and all over Tumblr because he honestly looks better than Tom Hiddleston in that costume. Sylar is a very pretty boy.

http://aicosu.tumblr.com/post/28187000920/sylar-as-loki-from-the-avengers-so-we-gave-in-and

She is a good Loki cosplayer, but Sylar really pulls off the costume.

Sometimes, having a certain body type or gender does impact how well you pull off a character.

However, my general point is cosplay is about costumes, not bodies, so nitpicking race, gender, or breast size seems a bit petty to me. Not that you were nitpicking, but as a general matter.

ForceStealer, I've never heard of calling cosplays costumes pissing people off, if it does, that seems silly.

I guess it's all a point of view.

People who are into cosplay will focus on the hard work behind the costumes and whatnot, while outsiders like me will focus on "how similar to the original" (or "how much does it give the vibe of the certain character") the whole package looks.

I don't think either of those two options are wrong, to be honest. To each their own, as they'd say.

You know I didn't really trust my memory on this one, so I did an image search. I saw many, many examples of Tifa's cowgirl outfit showing cleavage... all of which were fanart or cosplay. The official images and those direct from Crisis Core? Not so much. The outfit is definitely cut lower than the one she wears as an adult, sufficient to see her collar bones. But not cleavage, there's no line suggesting the space between breasts in any of these. Not gonna argue about the Wall Market dress, which was 100% old school lego graphics. But cowgirl Tifa is not exposing cleavage that I can see.

You have to look from the right angle. Here's the official art for that outfit:
FFCCVII-Tifa.jpg

As you can see, some of her cleavage is visible. The 012 version shows slightly more cleavage, as can be seen here:

Anyway, the conclusion is that her CC cowgirl outfit does show cleavage, but apparently not enough for Force Stealer to notice.

I can tell I'm a father now cause I spent like twice as much time dawwwing at the tiny Aerith as opposed to oogling Scarlet :awesome: Though oogle I did. I also like the Cid, it needs moar stubble at the chin but he's got the attitude down pat. Barrett I can only see as some alternate reality version where he got a gun grafted to his arm while much younger. Otherwise, damn good all around.
