Well, with 23:34 on the clock, I think I'm ready to move on to Timber. I have all of most cards I'm ever going to need:

PeGveZr.jpg

The only cards I've refined up to this point are about 10 Abyss Worms, 10 or so Vysages, maybe 10 Imps, a few Blitz cards, a few Snow Lions and maybe one or two others that aren't coming to mind right now.

I'm most happy with the Malboros, Ruby Dragons and Elnoyles. I'll never have to fight a Malboro for any of their tentacles (not even with the six needed for Doomtrain, the two needed for Save the Queen and the one needed to teach Quistis Bad Breath), I have enough Ruby Dragons I could give someone 100 Flares right now and I have three Energy Crystals' worth of Elnoyle cards with one left over to keep.

During the dream sequence, did you fiddle with any of the levers? The detonator? The boulder? Did you find the Old Keys?

I messed with the levers and opened 2 outta 3 of the trap doors. I correctly blew the boulders. I grabbed both keys but Laguna felt a draft on his butt and lost one and the other fell through a hole in his pocket:aah:

How is your card collection coming along? Have you come across any card rules you don't like in the card game?

Not really collecting cards atm, I hate random.

What do you think of Galbadia Garden as comapred to Balamb Garden?

Looks way way better and professional. I like the uniforms and the hi-tech equipment that they have.

What do you think of Irvine?

Great in battle

What city/town is your favorite out of those you've visited so far? What do you like about it?

Deling, it has the busy city type feel to it.

Did you solve the puzzle of the Tomb of the Unknown King? What do you think of its design?

Yes, Its a nice design because it makes the player think and the map you can buy is completely useless and makes it more confusing.

Did you acquire the GF Carbuncle?

No

Did you find it difficult navigating the sewers?

I did most of it from memory.

What do you think of the story so far?

This is one of my favorite moments in FF, I'd love it more if Edea's speech was actually translated correctly.

How do you like controlling Laguna compared to Squall?

Love Laguna.

Did you ask about Julia?

No

Did you stand up for the Moomba?

Of course, Moombas are my favorite sidekicks.

How did you have Squall handle the interrogation?

Told him his breath stinks.

Did you get your Battle Meter upgraded with the Character Report? Did you acquire anything else you found interesting in the prison?

No.

Who did you pick to send to the Missile Base?

Quistis, Rinoa, and Selphie.

Did you head straight to the Missile Base or do a little wandering first?

Straight to the base.

What time limit did you select in the base? Did you gain a SeeD rank? How many?

20 mins, I can't remember

Did you get the Rinoa card?

No

What are your thoughts on these developments in the story?

I feel like Disc 1 & 2 were the game's darkest moments after that its gets light and crazy.

That's all from playing triple triad...?
Tones and tones and tones of it... I'm getting close to having that many cards too, but I tend to refine as I go and instead of playing one long Triple Triad grind once, I spread it out over the course of the game. Much more bearable that way and then I can have fun spreading and abolishing rules.

Chapter 3

During the dream sequence, did you fiddle with any of the levers? The detonator? The boulder? Did you find the Old Keys?

I did fiddle with levers, found (and lost) the Old Keys, and hit the detonator switch that moved the closest boulder down. I had no idea what I was doing, haha. I was just finding and messing with things willy nilly.

How is your card collection coming along? Have you come across any card rules you don't like in the card game?

Um, well, I don't play nearly as often as a lot of you have been, so I don't think my card collection is anything to be proud of, but I've been winning pretty consistently. The only time I lost recently was when I ran into a game that used the "Same" rule without realizing it, so I wasn't prepared for that. Luckily, I had just saved before that, so I reset the game. But other than "Same", I have yet to run into any different rules.

What do you think of Galbadia Garden as comapred to Balamb Garden?

It's definitely a lot more structured and disciplined, it would seem. I can see why the Sorceress would choose Galbadia Garden as her base over Balamb. Also, I was pleased to find the Haste draw point completely accidentally :P

What do you think of Irvine?

Not going to lie...when he was first introduced, I thought he was a little dreamy :P Not at all what I'd normally go for, but I was charmed by his good looks, haha. Then he opened his mouth, and I just thought he was a boy with raging hormones. I guess they're at that age... Then he got a little deep with all of the 'loner' stuff, which gave him another dimension, but then I was completely let down and disappointed when he was freaking out about taking the shot. You always choke under pressure? Then why the hell did they choose you for this mission? You'd think that they'd be aware of his performance issues! But no, now I'm stuck with an immature whining boy who can't freaking save the world from this clearly evil sorceress (she just MURDERED the president in front of everyone! Called her minions on Rinoa! And you still can't take the shot?). Hrumph.

What city/town is your favorite out of those you've visited so far? What do you like about it?

Um, I think I'll say Timber. I liked the dynamic between the town folks and Rinoa, and even though I have to agree with Force about the ridiculous amount of loading screens, I like the size of the town.

Did you solve the puzzle of the Tomb of the Unknown King? What do you think of its design?

If by "solve the puzzle" you mean "get lost and wander hopelessly til you stumbled randomly upon the entrance and then have Force tell you the secret to navigating through it", then yeah, sure, I solved it :desu:

Did you acquire the GF Carbuncle?

Sure did.

Did you find it difficult navigating the sewers?

Imma be honest and say that I used a walkthrough. I still got lost, though, and had to start over once I'd found myself back at the beginning.

What do you think of the story so far?

Well, alright, we have a definite threat presenting itself now. I want to see where this goes. And geez, disk change, thanks for the cliff hanger :P I'll have to start the next chapter sometime soon just to see what happens next.

The characters are really starting to annoy me. There is the aforementioned frustration with Irvine, but Quistis and Rinoa both need to be slapped, in my opinion. I left Quistis in charge of the team because I thought she would be the most responsible (I know I didn't actually have the choice, but if I had, I would have made the same decision). But nooo, she decides RIGHT BEFORE they need to play their important role in the plan to take down the sorceress that she is going to leave her post so that she can apologize to Rinoa. Give me a break. Save it for later. And Rinoa. You think it's a great idea to go waltzing into the Sorceress's lair on your own, without telling anyone where you've gone (to be fair, Quistis wouldn't listen, but still). You SNUCK IN, and you expect her to greet you warmly and listen to your poorly played attempt at niceties in order to trick her into wearing that...bracelet thing? Guff! Zell and Selphie are just rather forgettable at this point, so I don't have any real complaints about them.

At least Squall did something badass.

How do you like controlling Laguna compared to Squall?
Bigger fan of Squall, and this time around he was doing much commentary. But you can't beat Man with the Machine.
Did you ask about Julia?
Off course!
Did you stand up for the Moomba?
Yup.
How did you have Squall handle the interrogation?
I let Squall die. It was his time.
Did you get your Battle Meter upgraded with the Character Report? Did you acquire anything else you found interesting in the prison?
Sure did and not really, just a few halfdecent cards.
Who did you pick to send to the Missile Base?
Irvine and Rinoa. They didn't really have a stake in the next mission and I can't keep inflicting Zell on Selphie.
Did you head straight to the Missile Base or do a little wandering first?
Straight there.
What time limit did you select in the base? Did you gain a SeeD rank? How many?
10 minutes and two ranks it seems. Should be doable, I made it and I screwed up my commands a couple of times.
Did you get the Rinoa card?
No.
What are your thoughts on these developments in the story?
I do not approve of Kiros' new outfit. Rinoa earns a few points back. For being the first to actually getting something useful out of the visions despite being the only one not getting them. Selphie proves fairly awesome. Quistis remains a noncommital background character, very disappointing.

What were your exam scores? How do you feel about your performance?
I can't remember them exactly, but I did pretty well. I thought the performance was better than I've ever done, really.

Did you get the Battle Meter?
Yep.

Any trouble finding the "secret area" in the Training Center?
No. And Quistis is actually encouraging this sort of thing, I'm not surprised she lost her instructor license.

Did you get the Magical Lamp? Did you use it?
Yes and no.

What rare cards have you gotten so far?
Not sure what we're counting as "rare" so to say, so I'm just going to list my inventory:

Geezard
Funguar
Bite Bug
Red Bat
Blobra
Gayla
Gesper
Fastitocalon-F
Blood Soul
Caterchipillar
Cockatrice
Buel
Belhelmel
Thrustaevis
Jelleye
Forbidden
Tri-Face
Fastitocalon
Snow Lion
SAM08G
Death Claw
Abyss Worm
Iron Giant
Behemoth
Chimera
Elastoid
Malboro
Elnoyle
Tonberry King
Ifrit

And now Angelo, since I beat Watts.

Did you give the Card Queen the MiniMog card?
I actually tried to get that bleeding card from that running kid for ages and he never used it, so I fucking gave up in the end. I'll pursue this matter later.

Did Laguna fall asleep while talking to Julia or just talk too much?
He talked too much. Probably the least embarrassing option. It's cute, though.

Did you take the cheap way out for the Gerogero boss fight?
Unsure what you mean, but I don't think so.

Did you visit Dollet again? What did you do there?
No, couldn't be bothered if I'm honest.

Did you get the Girl Next Door magazine?
I missed it, but will come back at some point.

What were your overall impressions of this chapter?
Let's see.

Laguna battle theme? Check.

Rinoa in party? Check.

Well, those are the only things I technically like. It's an interesting chapter, what with the start of the Laguna sequences and the plot twist with Seifer being possibly executed/dead. It's already setting up this love triangle between Squall, Rinoa and Seifer.

Now obviously Rinoa has feelings for Seifer and Squall, much as well as he may deny it, is starting to develop those feelings through ... hate. That's pretty much it.

Will be getting on with the next chapter soon as I can. For fun, I'm keeping one file for this playthrough and another for maximising my skills, etc.

I messed with the deteonator for sure. I didn't find them, no, are they important?

How is your card collection coming along? Have you come across any card rules you don't like in the card game?
Card collection is still the same. I loathe Random is all.

What do you think of Galbadia Garden as comapred to Balamb Garden?
It's huger. And on first impressions, you shouldn't trust them. But eh, it's Garden all the same.

What do you think of Irvine?
He's a dick, but a lovable one.

What city/town is your favorite out of those you've visited so far? What do you like about it?
Deling City. There are lots of places to go and people to meet.

Did you solve the puzzle of the Tomb of the Unknown King? What do you think of its design?
I did. It was extremely frustrating. I have to also add that while I did manage to beat and obtain the GF Brothers, I loathed every single sodding minute of it.

Did you acquire the GF Carbuncle?
Yep, first thing I did in the Iguna fight was Draw it.

Did you find it difficult navigating the sewers?
No, my awesome sense of direction never fails me.

What do you think of the story so far?
Well, I certainly liked this chapter. The stakes are higher than ever and of course, who can forget that iconic cutscene where Edea impales Squall with ice? The story's progressing well and you can tell the disc ended on a huge cliffhanger, leaving you to wonder what on earth happens next.

How do you like controlling Laguna compared to Squall?
I really like Laguna, he's like the complete opposite of Squall, open, a bit goofy, genuine, and really kind hearted. I particularly love his relationship with little Ellone and you can see there's something between him and Raine there, both of them don't come right out and say it but you can easily tell from Ellone's questions and Laguna's reluctance to leave Winhill. I'm often interested as to why the people of Winhill dislike Laguna so much, is it because he's an outsider in a secluded village or just because he resembles something that reminds Winhill of what they went through with the sorceress attack mentioned. Final note, Little Ellone is soooo damn cute.

Did you ask about Julia?
Yup, I kind of like that although Julia was sad that Laguna never returned, she got on with life, wrote her first song and fell in love again with someone else it feels more realistic than waiting over a year for someone who the beginnings of a relationship were only blossoming with. Julia's daughter's resemblence to her becomes more obvious once you realise who she's married to.

Did you stand up for the Moomba?
How could I not, those little Moomba's are adorable!

How did you have Squall handle the interrogation?
I find the option about if Squall wants to live funny, but its more beneficial to pick the 'die' option, Moomba shortcuts and items, plus it's a very Squall like thing to do.

Did you get your Battle Meter upgraded with the Character Report? Did you acquire anything else you found interesting in the prison?
I actually did, I managed to win the card game and got it upgraded, Squall has obviously had the most kills (193), Zell out of the main 6 characters has had the least (23) by the time I've got it. I also trawled every floor and picked up all items available, though most of the draw points I couldn't draw from because I've 100 of them.

Can I just say I found that whole anti-magic field plot thing a waste of time considering you can use magic from the start anyway, I think it would have been much more challenging if you weren't able to use magic for at least half of the prison story, it would have encouraged you to get used to junctioning more because there's a lot of enemies that can be taken down easily if you junction Thunder magic to Elm-attack and that can be affected by status attacks and it would have encouraged strategic planning on equipping your GFs so that everyone has a STR junction and can do extra damage.

Who did you pick to send to the Missile Base?
Zell and Quistis with Selphie, I figure something like this is better in the hands of 3 SeeDs :monster:

Did you head straight to the Missile Base or do a little wandering first? Did you get the Rinoa card?
I did a little bit of wandering and went to Deiling I upgraded Selphie's weapon to the Morning Star, and for the first time managed to win Rinoa's card. I don't really like having to give up Ifrit for it but I managed to Rinoa's without too much trouble.

What time limit did you select in the base? Did you gain a SeeD rank? How many?
10 minutes it really doesn't take long to fight that boss battle, I was struggling to mug stuff though and in the end I left it. I also did everything perfectly and gained 2 SeeD ranks and by the end of the chapter I gained 3 altogether, so I'm on Rank 13 now. I'm not going to bother with the SeeD exam written tests, this playthrough because Gil isn't as important in FFVIII in terms of purchasing things and the gil I'm getting consistently through SeeD Ranks is more than enough at the point.

What are your thoughts on these developments in the story?
There's some decent character development in this shortish chapter.

Selphie is much more mature in this chapter, You can tell the missile hitting Trabia has really shaken her and for her it's much more devastating because of the chance of loosing both of her homes, I guess you can see she's not always crazy hyper and does have a much more vulnerable side. It makes her character more realistic though, that's what I like about her.

Rinoa's moments are actually quite likeable in this and she also seems more mature, it's the turn of her character I think. I still don't enjoy her as an FF heroine but she goes from up until Deiling as this quite immature, reckless and disorganised fighter to someone taking a bit more responsibility and showing initiative. I mean she was the one who made Irvine go back to help her rescue everyone, you can tell she cares about the group as more than just the people she hired to help her, she's seeing them as her friends, granted it's a bit reckless for her to run back into a prison base armed with guards when her father is trying to keep her safe but the fact she went back because she knew the others would be in danger and that their Garden was in danger show's she cares very much for her friends. Her kicking Irvine down the stairs when he's having too much of a cocky moment is very funny, she literally does give him a kick up the arse to send him crashing back down to earth. Irvine does redeem himself despite his cocky attitude by kicking arse fighting off the gun wielding guards.

Zell is still a little over enthusiastic at times but he shows more leadership qualities than everyone likes to give him credit for and he does have his head screwed on during a rather battle-heated situation apart form when he goes a little crazy hugging Squall (You deserved that bonk to the head from Squall, Zell!)

Quistis and Irvine don't have much development here so I don't have much to comment on.

Squall, shows a more open side to him and willingness to trust others, we also see Squall slightly more panicked than disciplined SeeD we're used to. He allows Selphie to have complete control over the Missile mission and you can tell he trusts her to do a good job. He's still reluctant to be a leader but you can tell he's coming more around to the idea by thinking about what will happen to his comrades that he sends to the missile base and entrusting them to do a job that he's not a part of. You can see the panic in him when Seifer reveals what's going to happen to Garden and his concern of what might happen to his friends, he's showing much less of that cold-hearted bastard side as the game progresses.

Seifer's becoming more and more sadistic with every time we encounter him. There's something very unsettling about watching him torture Squall and threatening to do the same to the others, these are people he's clearly grow up with in Garden and granted they weren't all exactly the best of friends but the fact he's quite happy to torture them for information and let his home be bombed without a second though is rather disturbing.

That's it.

  • Are you enjoying the story? What do you think of it so far?
  • Anything else of interest stand out to you?

Excellent opening sequence. I remember I had a "demo" that was in actual fact just that video. And I watched it about 100 times before I got the game.

I never bother reading the information. Most of the time I just let Quezacotl and Shiva automagically pop into my inventory by heading straight to the gate, the slow controls of that study panel piss me off. If it wasn't for the Timber Maniacs stuff I'd just never use it.

The aesthetic of this game is odd. It's beautiful, but you have possibly Square's only attempt at hyper-realistic humanoid characters in the early generations mixed with these fantastical futuristic buildings and designs. It's pretty, but it's a clusterfuck.

Triple Triad is addictive. My adventures this time around are chronicled in previous posts :desu:

I showed Selphie around. But only because I have a conscience that won't let me say no. Showing her around has absolutely zero benefit other than making me feel not guilty.

Ten minute time limit and yes.

What other time? The 30 minute time limit? I actually tried to go for a personal best SeeD score but then I realised it's not possible to beat ATM092 and get to the beach within 5 minutes on the PAL version due to the slowdown. I got to the beach with 24 minutes remaining.

I fought robot spidey the one mandatory time then killed him in about 2 minutes in the following battle. Huzzah for overpowered early game junctions <3

Got Siren.

Exploration/ Control: There are a few things I don't like about this game. Well not flat-out dislike I just think they should have been a bit different. One of them is: it's not always obvious when you should interact with an object/ are able to. Such as in the library with the bookshelves or elsewhere. When there are things lying around, it's just not obvious that they're there. Some people might say that's a good thing but a lot of average joe schmoe items like magazines become entirely missable when they shouldn't. Also, movement is a tad awkward compared to IX. Obviously the addition of analgue movement makes everyone a happy bunny and it's vastly improved compared to VII, but I do think IX is where they finally got it right with the original PS.

LOL, battle system. I love the abuseability of the junction system so much <3.

I haven't finished the first chapter yet. Been playing too much Triple Triad. :monster:

I scored perfectly in every category except the one for making it back to the beach in 5 minutes, because I lost 20 points there. I think. Anyway this is probably the best I've ever done, huzzah.

I got the battle meter and had no trouble finding the secret area. What a bizarre question Tres? Even on my first attempt there's only really one way to go :D

Loves a magical lamp. Big shitting Diablos up in and about my business trying to cause low HP times. Renzokuken'd, mwahaha.

All possible rare cards have been collected - I think. I have Seifer, Quistis, Zell, Ifrit, Diablos and Minimog. I think that's all of them. I also got a Tiamat card from using Card on Grendels so often, but I'm skipping ahead here.

I didn't lost the minimog card to the self proclaimed queen of cards (why am i not the lord emperor of cards already i whoop her ass every time) because as I explained previously, I'm either doing the quest the quick way (losing all 4 cards at once so I don't have to keep chasing her around) or I'm not doing it at all, because it's a stupid quest and I really dislike the idea of losing cards to create new ones. The situation with Caraway is slightly different because he actually says "give me Ifrit or I'm not using my daughters card you filthy vagabond" rather than "u no wot, i mite like get mah daddy to paint nu 1z iff you lose this".

I do not like the queen of cards.

I never realised that this scene varies, but I've had both variations of it before. Is it reading a Timber Maniacs issue that changes it? He used to fall asleep more often when I was younger then I remember seeing the "I'm talking too much" version, but I never realised they were different. Weird.

No mistakes on the train mission. I killed Gerogero in one hit (a physical attack). So yes, I took the cheap way out :D. I picked up the Girl Next Door magazine, hooray.

I did not return to Dollet. It reminds me of France. I'll need to remember to pop by to pick up the Siren card at some point (probably when I do the card queen quest later on).

Overall impressions: I am upset by this chapter because I can't stand the encounter rate in Timber. Other than that it was OK.

I'm still on the first chapter. Been playing too much Triple Triad. :monster: I've got over 7 hours on the clock and still haven't moved on. XD Really, it's cause I want to get my junctions to a certain place before taking on X-ATM092.

Also because I'm shooting for getting the Lionheart as early as possible this playthrough. I've never gotten it on Disc 1 before. The earliest I ever snagged it was at FH.

  • What do you think of the story so far?

I did all the things

I've only really come across "Same" yet since I didn't bother with Dollet. Same doesn't particularly bother me since the high level cards I've collected are quite unlikely to match with an opponents deck.

I'm with Squall, I prefer the quiet, focussed militaristic environment as a military training academy. The only thing I prefer about Balamb Garden is the island location. Other than that, everyone there is too happy and they need some discipline slapped into them. Plus Balamb looks like those stupid alien baby pods stuck together with bad glue.

I'm pretty meh about Irvine. I wouldn't care much if he died.

Oddly enough, I think my favourite out of those so far is probably Deling City. In the whole game, it's either Edea's House, FH or Esthar. Butfrom those so Far its Deling City because it felt like the series' first proper real city (its kinda like London in some ways) and more importantly because the story stuff that happens there is cool.

Yeah totes did TotUK. Design is a bit daft and intentionally designed to confuse the player. Yes, I got lost the first time I did it. No I did not have the map or the thingy that shows you where you are on the map. There isn't a person alive who walked through that easily on their first attempt. Seriously, such a person does not exist. Stop lying, no you didn't.

Carbuncs is now a member of team supreme, yes.

The sewers can get fucked. I didn't have problems because of the headaches I endured as a child figuring out how to use those wheels but yeah, remember what I said about interactable objects in VIII's environment not being obvious? PRIME EXAMPLE.

Story is pretty good so far, find it tough to comment on this in hindsight. I think my honest emotions/ comments when first playing it were "wtf just happened, someone cast cure quick before he falls, why is Seifer alive this makes no sense, who is this witch and what is her agenda, man I knew Seifer was a dick but seriously what the fuck is wrong with him I hope he dies soon, why is Irvine such a limp dicked idiot about doing his task" etc. I think I remember thinking all of those things.

  • Did you get the Rinoa card?
  • What are your thoughts on these developments in the story?

I like Laguna. But I don't like the Laguna dream sequences, I honestly find them boring now. I think it's years of fatigue. I particularly dislike Winhill because of its really stupid encounter rate, but joy of joys this time I learned Enc-None and it was fine! I thoroughly enjoyed Ellone going "hooray" even though my monster count was 0. It felt like I cheated :D

I did not ask about Julia, I completely skipped all that dialogue because I know it off by heart and I couldn't be arsed reading it again.

HOW COULD YOU NOT STAND UP FOR THE MOOMBAS THEY'RE LIKE THE CUTEST THINGS EVER! Seriously, I love the moombas, I would murder a bitch for a plushie.

I had him give up and become suicidal.

I upgraded the battle meter. I also got a Rosetta Stone. Hooray!

I always have trouble deciding who to send to the Missile Base. I really like to take Zell and Quistis back to Balamb because... well it's their home? But this time I decided to change it up and took Rinoa (i've done this before, extra FMV yadda yadda boring waking me up go away Rinoa etc) but for the first time, possibly EVER I took Irvine to Balamb. It felt dirty and wrong not sending him with Selphie to the missile base, and as a result my missile base dialogue was boring as hell (Irvine comments a lot on the stuff Selphie does there, Zell and Quistis don't really have great top up dialogue there).

Got the Rinoa card from Caraway and used the good old infinite gil trick for some fun mega potion times etc.

10 minute time limit, +2 SeeD rank. Woo.

Anyway, this is approaching one of my favourite parts of the game (BATTLE OF THE GARDENS HERE WE COME WOOOO!) but I'll be honest, D-Distric Prison is a truly horrendous place. Forcing me to run in huge circles on largely identical floors is horrible. I fell asleep doing this earlier. Thank fuck for enc-none, this prison just bloody takes too long to get out of.

The missile base is less boring, and actually really really sad. But interesting story wise, especially since who you send there is a choice.

Then its back to boring with the repetitive fights back at Garden. But hey ho, it's about to ramp up exponentially and I couldn't be more excited, from here on out there's very little boring left.

I played on a little bit more and have completed a section of the upcoming chapter.

So I've been spending time in B-Garden actually playing cards and getting addicted to it for the first time! I've actually managed to get the mini-mog and Quistis card and acquired a nice amount of Malboro, Blue Dragon and Elnoyle cards. I've never been a fan of the card game buy last night something clicked into place and I'm winning and kicking ass and everything!

My next goal is to get Seifer's card.

Chapter One

What did you think of the opening sequence? How do you feel it compares to other FF opening sequences?

I thought that the opening sequence was damn impressive when I originally played the game, and I still find that it leaves a lasting impact. As others in this thread have mentioned, I loved the intertwined nature of the fight between Squall and Seifer and the glimpses of future events. It really pulls you into the universe and sets the stage for the story to come. It definitely ranks as my top opening sequence.

Did you read the information available on Squall's study panel or just head on out into the game?

I took a moment to read through the study panel and the tutorials again.

What do you think of the overall aesthetic in this game (character models, backgrounds, technology, etc.) compared to other FFs?

I love the aesthetics of VIII. It was such a vast change from the clunky 3D character models of VII and really breathed life into the characters within the game. I wasn't a huge fan of the overuse of technology and backgrounds since I absolutely loved the steampunk nature of VII, but I can forgive that because the models were so great.

Did you start playing Triple Triad yet? What do you think of it?

I absolutely hate the card games within the series, so am staying clear of it during this run.

Did you take the transfer student on the tour as she requested?

Of course! Not only did it get me reacquainted with Balamb Garden but it's always nice to help out someone new and lost.

What time limit did you pick for the Fire Cavern? Were you successful with your first choice?

I selected 20 minutes, which I was able to successfully achieve.

Did you have any trouble beating the other time during the field exam?

Breezed through the time limit in the exam as well, no problems whatsoever.

How many times did you fight X-ATM092? Did you try to destroy it? Were you successful?

Can't remember the exact number, but I damaged it around 4 or 5 times before finally reaching the escape point of the beach. Wasn't strong enough to finish it off.

Did you get the GF Siren?

Yes.

What do you think of the controls/exploration compared to other FF titles?

Controls are fine, though I've tweaked them quite a bit to get a good keyboard layout. I find the exploration of the world really good. There are several nooks and cranies you can explore and it definitely feels like a living breathing world that is going on around you, which I didn't feel in a lot of the earlier FF games.

What about the battle system?

Unfortunately, I never thought that the the battle system was stellar. I enjoy it, but I'm just not a huge fan of the limit break set-up, and the quite boring magic drawing system. Junctioning was an interesting concept, but it ultimately left the Guardian Forces themselves feeling wasted. As soon as I worked out junctioning, I never used a GF in the game again! Though saying that, I give the game a lot of props for making Guardian Forces an integral part of the storyline ... as we'll find out whilst playing again!

Are you enjoying the story? What do you think of it so far?

I felt that the story takes a while to get into, but that was fine, since it was great getting a feel for the world and the set-up of Gardens, SeeDs and everything else.

Anything else of interest stand out to you?

Not at the moment!

Chapter Two

What were your exam scores? How do you feel about your performance?

I can't remember the exact scores now, but it went really well.

Did you get the Battle Meter?

Yes!

Any trouble finding the "secret area" in the Training Center?

None! Only encountered a few enemies along the way and got to the secret area quite quickly. Still hate Squall's attitude there though. Quistis was really trying to open up to him. She didn't want anything - just for him to listen to her problems and he came off as quite a jerk!

Did you get the Magical Lamp? Did you use it?

Yes. Used it straight away in order to tame Diablos.

What rare cards have you gotten so far?

None I'm afraid.

Did you give the Card Queen the MiniMog card?

Nope.

Did Laguna fall asleep while talking to Julia or just talk too much?

Laguna talked far too much, lol.

Did you perform the train mission flawlessly or have to do anything over?

I was surprised. I thought that I would mess up a few times when entering the codes but it all went flawlessly!

Did you take the cheap way out for the Gerogero boss fight?

Nope, went in with all guns blazing!

Did you visit Dollet again? What did you do there?

No.

Did you get the Girl Next Door magazine?

I did!

What were your overall impressions of this chapter?

I really enjoyed this segment of the game, getting to know the Resistance movement and the expansion of the world. Yeah, really enjoyed it.

Chapter Three

During the dream sequence, did you fiddle with any of the levers? The detonator? The boulder? Did you find the Old Keys?

I did use the detonator and set off the boulders, but I remembered the sequence wrong and set off the boulder closest first. Didn't find the Old Keys.

How is your card collection coming along? Have you come across any card rules you don't like in the card game?

I've been ignoring the card game I'm afraid.

What do you think of Galbadia Garden as comapred to Balamb Garden?

I felt that Galbadia Garden felt quite cold and sterile compared to Balamb. Balamb felt quite warm and welcoming but I just didn't feel this with Galbadia. I didn't even like exploring it.

What do you think of Irvine?

Love the guy, lol! Right off the bat he's picking an all girl team and confessing his love for Selphie, lol. Great guy.

What city/town is your favorite out of those you've visited so far? What do you like about it?

Balamb so far. I just love the coastal / seaside town vibe that is going on. It just feels nice and natural.

Did you solve the puzzle of the Tomb of the Unknown King? What do you think of its design?

Yes. Played it back from memory and managed to grab the Brothers GF. I quite liked the design. I remember on my original playthrough that it took ages to figure out though. Then when I discovered the location tracker, it just made things SO much easier.

Did you acquire the GF Carbuncle?

Yes.

Did you find it difficult navigating the sewers?

Every. Damn. Time. Lol.

What do you think of the story so far?

It's picking up and really enjoying the story now.

I just started playing it. Thanks for doing this thing guys, reminded me why I used to love FF.

1) The Junctioning system is very confusing.
2) Dialogue options! Nice. I wonder if they'll affect my relationship with the other characters ala Mass Effect or The Walking Dead.
3) Did I say that the Junctioning system is confusing?
4) How do you expect me to know how much time I need to beat the Fire Cavern?!

EDIT: Some guide said that I'd be lucky if I finish it within 20 minutes. So I set it to 30. I completed the Cavern in 15. So I'll be getting lower points or something. What the hell yo'?! I'm being penalized for being better than I thought I was?

Also, Squall reminds me of Gackt for some reason.

Alllsssooo, Elemental Attacks with the Junction system involved is confusing. I hate this system.

Elemental attacks with the junction system is only confusing if you let it be, think of it in the same way as putting an elemental and lightning materia linked together in your weapon FFVII the stronger the elemental spell and the amount you junction, the more the damage increases.

Similarly think of the elm defence ability as the same as linking your elemental materia and lightning materia in your armour, the stronger the elemental spell the higher the defence against that element.

The only difference between the two is FFVIIIs system takes onto account the quantity of your spell junctioned as well as the power whereas in FFVII the elemental attack or defence got stronger as the materia leveled up

Chapter 4

How do you like controlling Laguna compared to Squall?

Personality wise? Laguna has his quirks, but I don't get annoyed with him the same way that I do with Squall. He's also gone through some serious changes since we last saw him, and he feels so broken. It's the most interesting personality shift I've seen during the game thus far. Gameplay wise, I love controlling him, because I get to hear Man with the Machine Gun during every battle :P Not that I dislike Don't Be Afraid, I actually really like it, but there's just something about MwtMG that I absolutely love.

Did you ask about Julia?

I did, and the response made me really sad for Laguna. It also confirmed for me (finally) that these dream sequences take place in the past, and I'm finally seeing some lines being drawn between the two sets of characters now.

Did you stand up for the Moomba?

Yup. Such weird little creatures they are! Huge paws.

How did you have Squall handle the interrogation?

He refused to talk.

Did you get your Battle Meter upgraded with the Character Report? Did you acquire anything else you found interesting in the prison?

Yes. I was afraid that I'd lose the card game over and over or something and have to keep resetting the game, but it only took playing it once. And I got the Pet House, and...some other things that I honestly can't remember off the top of my head. Holy crap, that dungeon was annoying, though. Really had a screw up at the part right before you fight Biggs and Wedge again - when trying to switch the junctions to the active party, we accidentally exited the menu, and the battle automatically started. So we actually reset the game and had to go through the dialogue from when you first find yourselves in the prison up to the Biggs/Wedge fight all over again. Annoying!

Who did you pick to send to the Missile Base?

Selphie, Irvine, and Rinoa.

Did you head straight to the Missile Base or do a little wandering first?

Went to Deling City to exploit buying tents/refining tents to mega potions/selling mega potions for easy profit, then bought more tents and converted them to curagas to seriously boost our HP stats.

What time limit did you select in the base? Did you gain a SeeD rank? How many?

10 minutes, and no.

Did you get the Rinoa card?

Nope.

What are your thoughts on these developments in the story?

Like I said before, I finally see that the dream sequences are flash backs of some sort. At first, I thought they were just another set of people in the same timeline that were somehow connected to the main party. I'm curious to see how everything connects with that.

So, so far, we've seen what looks like the death of four main characters. Squall turned out to not be dead, so I'm guessing that my missile base party isn't dead, either :P

I'm still having a bit of a hard time really connecting to or caring about most of the characters. At least Irvine has redeemed himself, somewhat, and Squall has had a couple of badass moments through the game so far, and there wasn't TOO much stupidity going on during this chapter (other than Selphie just bashing keys on the control consoles...), but still. I'm holding out a little hope that something will change that, but not too much, to be honest. It's not like I'm not enjoying the game or anything, it's been fun (I still don't really like the junction system, if only because we're forced to switch parties so often and we have to switch the junctions every single time) and I do like the game play for the most part.

I'm still behind a bit, but should get caught up relatively soon. For now, I have Chapter 2 finished.

What were your exam scores? How do you feel about your performance?

Conduct: 70
Judgment: 100
Attack: 100
Spirit: 100
Points Deducted: 100 (meaning no points deducted)
Bonus: 100
SeeD Rank: 10

I feel quite good about all this, considering that 10 is the highest starting rank. :monster:

I don't think it's possible to get a perfect score on Conduct if you take the time to destroy the X-ATM092. I just don't see how you could manage to take him out and get back to the beach in under five minutes, no matter what your junctions or levels happen to be. Under ten minutes for the second best time, sure, but I've never done it in under five.

Did you get the Battle Meter?

Of course. :monster:

Any trouble finding the "secret area" in the Training Center?

Not this time, thankfully, but the first time I played the game, I wandered around for literally hours since that doorway is only accessible this one time during the game. I had already been spending some time in the Training Center before this development in the story, so I "knew" there was actually no door there and never bothered trying to check it for the longest time.

I got really frustrated for a while and thought I was either stuck or that my game was broke. :monster:

Did you get the Magical Lamp? Did you use it?

Yes, and yes.

What rare cards have you gotten so far?

All that are available right now -- Seifer, Quistis, Zell, MiniMog, Ifrit, Diablos, Angelo, Siren and anything else I may not be thinking of.

Well, not Kiros, because I haven't started the Queen of Cards quest yet (out of choice), but everything else.

Did you give the Card Queen the MiniMog card?

No, I'm going to do all that much later.

Did Laguna fall asleep while talking to Julia or just talk too much?

I got him to fall asleep. I think it's funny, and what Julia says about him being adorable when he's asleep is sweet.

Did you perform the train mission flawlessly or have to do anything over?

Flawlessly. :monster:

Did you take the cheap way out for the Gerogero boss fight?

Nah, I didn't exploit his Undead status this time. I have before for shits and giggles, but I took him down honest this time.

Did you visit Dollet again? What did you do there?

I did! I went ahead and did the Bone Quest. I know I would get better items for doing it later, but I just wanted to get it over with.

I also went ahead and played cards with the pub owner, got the Siren card from him, got Occult Fan II and eliminated Random and Elemental from this region.

I also did some weapon remodeling while I was here after fighting Adamantoises on the beach. Since I went ahead and did the forest dream sequence before coming here, I could fight Grendels, which I did to get four Dragon Fangs.

You can probably guess what that means? Yep, I already have Lion Heart. I also have Ehrgeiz for Zell and Strange Vision for Selphie.

I would have Shooting Star for Rinoa, but I didn't get the Force Armlet off the X-ATM092 earlier. I took the Hypno Crown for the Mag+40% ability to improve Zell's crappy Draw rate at the time.

I kind of wish I had done it now, as -- though Ochus will drop them on rare occasions -- Ochus themselves are extremely rare encounters around Timber's forests and it's too much of a pain in the ass dealing with the much more frequent encounter with two Funguars and a Cockatrice, particularly when you're trying to keep your levels low by defeating them with the Card ability.

Yes, Lex's insanity bug has bitten me too and I'm trying to keep everyone's levels down until all the Bonus abilities become available. I let them get just high enough that Elastoids would occasionally be at level 30 and have Meltdown, Ochus would occasionally have Pain and Adamantoises would drop me some Adamantine (as well as have Reflect for me to stock), but to where lower level monsters in the 20s range would still appear too so I could get the Dragon Fangs off the Grendels.

It's a difficult balance to strike, but I did it successfully. I did actually manage to encounter high-level Ochus a few times (got 100 Pains for three characters that way), but they never did drop the Force Armlet and I got sick of dealing with Funguars without giving into the impulse to just kill the bastards.

I could get one as a rare drop off the rarely encountered Forbiddens in the Tomb of the Unknown King a little bit later, but I'd have to increase someone's levels enough to offset the fact that Irvine is going to lower the party's average level when he comes rolling in at level 13 (Rinoa's current level). Since only level 30 and above Forbiddens will drop the Force Armlet, someone would have to miss out on several possible stat increase levels just for the sake of Rinoa having the weapon now.

Not really worth it since you're guaranteed to get a Force Armlet from the last boss of Disc 2 (provided you don't use Mug), and since I'll probably get one from an Ochu before then anyway.

Once I have Carbuncle and Leviathan, between them, Ifrit and Siren, I'll have Str Bonus, Mag Bonus, Vit Bonus and Spr Bonus. With the Rosetta Stones I plan to get at the beginning of Disc 2, someone will be able to have all four abilities as they level up by putting all four GFs on them.

With that in place, I'll just go ahead and start leveling everyone up to 100 early, starting with Quistis using Degenerator over and over while the other two party members are in KO status. Once she's done, I'll wake a second party member up, give them the GFs, then continue the process -- and so on and so forth.

Right now, most of the characters' levels are still low. Squall is at 40, but he's had Str Bonus and Mag Bonus for quite some time, so he's been benefitting. Rinoa and Irvine are at 13, Zell's at 23, Quistis is at 22 and Selphie is at 17.

They're going to be some badass motherfuckers when I'm done with them. :monster:

While I might be insane, I'm not going to pull a Lex and get the four Energy Crystals still needed for Save the Queen now by playing cards, though. =P I have the two for Shooting Star (only used one for Pulse Ammo since I got a couple Laser Cannons as Elastoid drops), and that's plenty for now.
Did you get the Girl Next Door magazine?

Naturally. Can you see me passing up porn?

What were your overall impressions of this chapter?

Love it. Really gets you into the excitement of SeeD life and it's more awesome still for putting Rinoa in the party and introducing Edea. That intro scene with her is still as unsettling and "wtf" as ever.

Chapter Four: Arms Race

How do you like controlling Laguna compared to Squall?

Laguna is SO refreshing after playing through moody Squall. Love his personality and zest for life. He's just a likeable character. And like AvecAloes mentioned, his battle theme is just fantastic. It really gets you pumped.

Did you ask about Julia?

Yes! Shame she hooked up with Caraway! :(

Did you stand up for the Moomba?

Love those guys! I stood up to the big meanie!

How did you have Squall handle the interrogation?

I had Squall survive by telling the lie about flowers, robbing people of the will to fight so that they can eventually invade, lol.

Did you get your Battle Meter upgraded with the Character Report? Did you acquire anything else you found interesting in the prison?

Nope.

Who did you pick to send to the Missile Base?

Selphie, Quistis and Zell. Squall, Rinoa and Irvine are my main team, so always try to stick with them.

Did you head straight to the Missile Base or do a little wandering first?

Straight there.

What time limit did you select in the base? Did you gain a SeeD rank? How many?

Was feeling confident so I picked just 10 minutes. Though was cursing the clock by the time I took on the MTV. Luckily, I just managed to finish the battle by the time it hit a minute and a half remaining.

Did you get the Rinoa card?

No, I didn't.

What are your thoughts on these developments in the story?

As AlecAloves mentioned, it does kinda get annoying having to switch SO many times. Once or twice is fine, but the constant switching between characters just go so annoying and having to re-junction everyone all the time. At this point, I still feel that the story isn't that strong. You barely know about the Sorceresses and why she is attacking SeeDs and the Gardens. But as I mentioned before, the characters are enough to keep you hooked at this point.

About to unlock the secrets of the former Shelter. So I guess it's on to the next chapter!

Tip for everyone about junctions: In the party switch screen, you can also just switch over all a character's current junctions as well. That way you don't have to manually do all of it each time.

What did you think of the opening sequence? How do you feel it compares to other FF opening sequences?

It's most likely to be one of the most impressive Final Fantasy openings in history, though not the best as it starts off way too fucking fast and then comes to a halt when Squall's introduction comes in, FF 9 did a better job of keeping pace, and FF 10

still fucking love it though, don't get me wrong, but it's like getting drunk at a party and then having to cope with a stinging headache hangover.

Did you read the information available on Squall's study panel or just head on out into the game?

Yes and i gave Shiva and Quetzalcoatl silly names

meet boobs and Queen

you know

Thunder bolts of lightning, very, very frighting ?

:monster:

What do you think of the overall aesthetic in this game (character models, backgrounds, technology, etc.) compared to other FFs?

Pretty impressive, I still want to go to school at Balamb Garden even all these years later, most young adults these days are waiting for that Hogwarts letter, fuck that, I'm still want to be that SeeD

Did you start playing Triple Triad yet? What do you think of it?

no, not till later and going to try and get that Quistis card to pev at

i mean, get the items for so you can get Triple spells earlier from memory

Did you take the transfer student on the tour as she requested?

no too lazy, she can do it herself, she's capable.

What time limit did you pick for the Fire Cavern? Were you successful with your first choice?

haha no 10 mins and did it like a champion

Did you have any trouble beating the other time during the field exam?

no

How many times did you fight X-ATM092? Did you try to destroy it? Were you successful?

No I did that last playthrough, so this time it was a quick run through and not dealing with you again attitude. I think I pumped into him 3 times, because I'm a forgetful klutz and kept on messing up and also wanted to save that Dog that provoked Seifer.

Did you get the GF Siren?

Yes and named her Ariel

Because Little Mermaid

What do you think of the controls/exploration compared to other FF titles?
What about the battle system?

I know what to do, so they are no issue for me personally but thinking back in the day, they were confusing as shit, like do you have to draw 99 spells ???

no you don't, but the game isn't easy on newbies and is not noob friendly. The game awards for being a expert and knowing your shits, because the more you understand the Junction System and Drawing system, the more you can abuse it and get shit like Lionheart CD 1

Are you enjoying the story? What do you think of it so far?

It's alright, like mentioned before it has a action pumping opening and then slows down and becomes rather slow and at times tedious.

Anything else of interest stand out to you?

Seifer's cape is badass, i just love the way he walks with his cronies behind him like a boss

i had a huge crush on him when i was little and i can't see why haha these days I see him as the Final Fantasy version of Kayne West
