Epic Games announced today that Square Enix is making the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake with Unreal Engine 4.

“We’re humbled that Square Enix has chosen Unreal Engine 4 to re-create one of the world’s most beloved video games of all time,” said Taka Kawasaki, territory manager for Epic Games Japan, in a press release sent to GamesBeat. “It is a joy to work with the talented developers behind the franchise, and this marks an unforgettable moment in Unreal Engine history.”

I'm surprised that this wasn't more talked about when it was revealed, tbqh. Still, good to know.

This confirms an earlier rumour, so part of the reason it might not be getting a lot of coverage is that it's already been discussed.

That and people are still blowing their shit over some other, somewhat minor multi-eps news. :wacky:

Cool to hear it being confirmed, :monster:

The implications are also pretty broad; the U4 engine allows game makers to build crossplatform games without too much extra effort, which may imply the remake could be a crossplatform game. Off course, Sony might be offering Square billions to plzkthx make it an exclusive - I'm convinced the FF games are part of the reason why a lot of the people in the FF fandom are Playstation fans.

It all makes sense now :awesome: I definitely think Square is keeping an open mind for a possible FFVII:Remake release on a Nintendo console, though at this point they can't be sure if it's going to happen. Merely my speculation.

Can I just...

One of the first articles I wrote about the remake contains the following quote:

”Earlier this year, Cyberconnect2 told Famitsu that they are working hard on creating photo-realistic RPG experience with Unreal Engine 4. It’s very likely Final Fantasy VII Remake is running on it too.”

There was another quote from Square Portal itself which we used in another article which just plainly stated that Cyberconnect2 was involved with development and they were using Unreal Engine 4. We actually discussed it in the first reaction thread.

Obviously this is official confirmation which is great, but I feel like we knew this already XD. If someone wants to write an article for the news though, be my guest.

You gotta be kidding me. This is the same engine they're using for KH3 and 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue. Well, at least Cyber...whatever group is involved with the development, and despite FFVII G-Bike shutting down next week, they did a pretty good job with the game.

But still, Unreal Engine 4 just leaves me cold since seeing those two images recently, with Sora in KH3 and Riku, Kairi and King Mickey in Aqua's new gameplay in 2.8.

That'd be interesting to see; up until FFVII, Square was a Nintendo company basically. I guess Sony gave them a better deal, plus off course the technical superiority of the Playstation console.

@Lex, that's what I thought, but whenever I mentioned it nobody seemed to confirm it, so idk.

This coupled with one of the posts in another thread, someone just get Lex his crystal ball and we'll set you up in a kiosk somewhere. :monster:

^We have to go back to the [probably definitely true] rumour mill, but the person who confirmed the FFVII Remake before it was appearing at E3, as well as Cyberconnect2 and UE4's involvement prior to E3 made the following points on NeoGAF:

(When asked if it would be available on XBox)

"No, probably PC eventually though. This is another SF5 situation."

(When asked if it was confirmed for PC)
"It means I don't know for certain. Everyone who talked about it to me only mentioned PS4."

SE should clarify this themselves, but I would not expect it on that platform - especially given where the fanbase for FF lies (hint: not on Xbox). I said it's possible, nothing for certain. It might not even do that depending on the release timeline. I'm just making a guess based on what's happened with other Sony-funded things as of late.

My 2c: buy a PS4 if you want to play this game before the next decade.

We also have Kitase talking about how awesome the PS4's power is and how they're working to unlock the consoles full potential for this remake, no mention of any other platform.

Obviously anything made for the PS4 can be played on PC, so the "Play it first" thing means they're considering other platforms beyond PS4. One of those is probably the next Nintendo console, which would be super cool. And they're releasing a lot more stuff on PC these days, so that would be cool too. The only thing that seems rather unlikely is XBox (based on these rumours).

From what I've seen, Square's engines are decent... but building your own engine for just a few games is kinda wasteful nowadays, especially if you no longer do console exclusives. The PS3 had special hardware too that was different from any other system, but nowadays all major game systems are built around off-the-shelf-ish PC hardware, so no need for that kinda specialism either anymoar.

We'll have to come to a consensus on how to pronounce it though. Kinda sounds like... Fiver? I'm okay with calling it Fiver, :monster:. (Also because eff eff vee eye eye are doesn't have a nice ring to it)

I think that pronouncing it like "fear" makes more sense -- especially given peoples' reactions lately. :awesomonster:

"It may bring joy, it may bring FFVIIR, but we will embrace whatever it brings."

Judging by the trailer, the unreal engine is doing a fine job.

I have to admit, while I am miffed that they gave Barret sunglasses, (just hope they don't change the designs in the rest of the main characters-Cloud, Tifa, Yuffie, Vincent, Nanaki, Aerith, Zack, Rufus, Tseng, Reno, Rude, Elena and-hopefully-the BC and CC characters) I am impressed with the way the game looks so far. Better than KH3's current look.

But then again, I think the main problem with the way KH3 looks is the "Kingdom Shader" program they're using.
