Fighting Games - GET HYPE!

So yeah, who else plays fighting games? It's probably my favorite multiplayer genre hands down - there is nothing quite as exciting as going 1v1 with a human opponent and matching up to see whose manual dexterity, ability to adapt, character mastery, and knowledge of the game mechanics will prove superior.

It's also really easy to set up gatherings - just get one console + TV and pass the controllers (or arcade sticks, as it were) around - compared to doing a LAN session or whatever.

Street Fighter IV kicked off the FG revival and is still going strong - as evidenced by a 1000+ man showing (and even bigger spectator crowd) for the SF4 tournament at Evolution 2k9 this past month.

Finals (between #1 American player Justin Wong and Daigo "The Beast" Umehara) were pretty hype:

The other current "hotness" is Blazblue - the latest fighter from the creators of Guilty Gear. It has a similar sort of anime-inspired art style and crazy character designs, but a much easier to pick up system. Plus, it's in full HD goodness.

Here's an example of high-level play between one of the top Japanese Jin players (Nise-Pachi) and an expert Noel (Nagi).

Yeah, it's very combo heavy - but the timing is really lenient so you'll be learning to chain out hits on the fly (depending on character distance, what they're doing, etc.) as you become more acclimated to the game. The best part of playing an ArcSys fighter has always been understanding your character so well that you can improvise combos.

.....

Anyhoo, I'm always willing to play some games online provided we get a decent connection. Add me on PSN (exmakina) if you'd like to throw down sometime. :)

(I also play SoulCalibur 4, which is actually my main fighting game series, but the netcode there is so bad I only play offline >.>)

SF Alpha 2

Darkstalkers 3

Gundam Battle assault 2

Inu-Yasha, secret of the blah blah blah- generic as hell anime based game, but still fun.

Bloody Roar 3, etc.

Soul Cals edge through 3. No PS3 or 360, ergo no 4.

Brawl and Tatsunoko v Capcom are also skippy awesome.

Can't wait for the english release of the latter.

I love fighting games, are you kidding me!

It's the thrill of mastering a particular character that governs a particular tier like Talim of the Soul Calibur series is notable for being a mid-tier to low-tier character usually. I love competing against people and it's the ability to win and to struggle through it per se that's just fun.

But yeah I usually gravitate towards games like: Street Fighter Alpha II and III, Soul Calibur: II and III, Tekken II and, V, or Marvel vs Capcom.

It's so weird. I really was excited and all hyped up for Brawl, but I haven't touched the game in over a year now. I just got so tired of it. I don't even know why, I just stopped...caring.

Ah good, just wanted to see if people around here had some modicum of gaming taste. :P

<insert obligatory trash talk about how I'd beat all of you if we ever played, which will be never>

Ryushikaze: I forgot about Tatsunoko v Capcom... it looks interesting, but a little too crazy for me (same with the Marvel series in general). Probably fun to mess around in, but I doubt I'll try to get good at the game.

Dacon: If it doesn't have a QCF motion, I want no part of it. -_- In all seriousness, I can see why people like Fight Night and UFC games and the like, but they don't register as fighting games to me (fighters are played in an arcade!). More like sports/sims or whatever.

RE: SSB Brawl - I always thought the series was a fun party game, but I personally could never sit down and take it seriously. More power to people who can compete and excel, just not my cup of tea.

I enjoy them, but I suck royally. the only fighting game I've ever been decent at was Narutimate Hero 3.

If anyone wants to get an easy match in, like literally you'll most likely get perfect, in SFIV, challenge me on the 360: interslicery

I'm a fucking failure when it comes to fighting games. The only one I ever play is Tekken and with Nina I am barely mediocre.

I grew up playing nothing BUT fighters.

But then I branched out. Fighters are still some of my favorites, just wish they had more good ones. Haven't picked up BB yet, but I certainly will. Just hoping they make a new Darkstalkers and Killer Instinct (and I'd kill for MvC 3...especially with a hugely expanded roster).

Also - SFIV is shit, imo.

^MvC fan, eh? Planning to pick up the XBL/PSN re-release of MvC2?

I have my beefs with SF4, certainly (prevalence of 1-frame links, stupid option selects, overemphasis of conservative play), but the local competition is huge so... I play it. *shrug* Honestly, an okay fighting game with a lot of people learning it seriously is more fun than a great one that no one knows how to play properly.

So yeah, just curious: how many of you have a local 'scene' of some sort - as in a group of players who understand the game mechanics in-depth, practice combos, etc. that you play with regularly? Or do most of you play solo or online?

Been meaning to pick LE Blaz Blue, but it's almost impossible to find and who knows what's going with the standard version.

I don't know anything about BB at all, except that I saw some LE version on sale on Ebay and wanted it =/

EM: Yeah, sort of. I used to play the shit out of it every day when I wasn't getting many hours at work, so I've logged a good 200+ hours easily. But I'm still not that great, and getting rusty, too. God I loved playing Rogue as super-aggressive :D I kinda miss it, but not enough to buy it for XBL, since I have the PS2 version.

But I really just want a MvC3 for more characters - imagine it with Dante from DMC, Samanosuke from Onimusha, more RE characters, some SF4 gaiz...and still in 2D! <33

I would love an MvC3 or a SNKvs.Capcom 3 in the future, but alas I heard that there'll be NO MORE SNK VS. CAPCOM. D: I value Soul Calibur as well. Tekken and Fight Night.

My personal favorite fighting games are Capcom vs Marvel 2 and Super Smash Bros Brawl. Although Soul Calibur and Tekken are also good fighting games, but I don't like playing them as much as I do with Capcom vs Marvel 2 or Super Smash Bros Brawl.
