Final Fantasy VI Homepage Soon added!

Basic Story Line:
1000 years ago, the War of the Magi decimated most of the world's technology and all known magic. Today, technology has made an impressive and remarkable comeback, popping up almost everywhere on the face of civilization.

The reigning Empire remains at war with various rebel factions, causing unrest among the related parties. Nonetheless, the world is striving successfully to rebuild itself from the perils of War. However, the Empire has grown curious and power-hungry for the ancient power known only as "magic". Their leader and a slightly insane general crave this power, and are willing to destroy anything that comes in their way.

With the finding of an ancient Esper, a seemingly vital source of "magic", the Empire is poised to take full control of this mysterious power. Several warriors, from all walks of life, must band together despite their differences in order to save the world from one who would conquer it, and who would destroy it.

Terra Branford:
Age: 18
Height: 5'6
Weight: 106
Special Abilities: Morph
Dislikes: Small spaces
Likes: To fluff Moogles (Moogles in general I do believe)

Terra has a mysterious past and no idea who her true identity is. On her quest for the truth and answers about her life, she feels her own loneliness. She's had no true friends until she meets the Returners and yearns to discover love.

Edgar Roni Figaro:
Age: 27
Height: 6'2
Weight:
Special Abilities: Tools
Dislikes: Lectures and Men.
Likes: To decorate his room (his father's old room. His father would decorate)

self-proclaimed ladies man, and master mechanic. Throning Figaro, his castle is equipped with powerful engines that enable it to burrow and traverse underground. He pretends to be an Imperial supporter, but is actually in league with the resistance group the Returners.

Locke Cole:
Age: 25
Height: 5'9
Weight:
Special Abilities: Steal
Dislikes: Mushrooms
Likes: Sleeping under the stars and traveling

but at times Locke uses his skills for theft. He prefers to be considered a treasure hunter and easily intimidated by anyone who refers to him as a thief. His first meeting with Terra brings back the pains of a lost love and he vows to keep her safe until her memory returns.

Celes Chere:
Age: 18
Height:
Weight:
Special Abilities: Runic
Dislikes: Weak men
Likes: Roses and gardening with Cid

while she was young, Celes is the only character opposite Terra who can use magic without having to learn from Magicite. A former Imperial general, Celes is branded a traitor after doubting the Empire. She considers herself a soldier and not love starved.

More characters later.

Final Fantasy VI takes place on a large, unnamed world. During the course of the game, its geography and landscape change due to various developments in the game's plot. During the first half of the game, the world is divided into two major continents and referred to as the World of Balance. The northern continent is punctuated by a series of mountain ranges and contains many of the locations accessible to the player. Halfway through the game, the world's geographical layout is altered, resulting in its two large continents splitting into several islands of various size situated around a larger continent at their center.

This altered layout of the game's locations is referred to as the World of Ruin. In contrast to the medieval settings featured in previous Final Fantasy titles, Final Fantasy VI is set in a steampunk environment. The structure of society parallels that of the latter half of the 19th century, with opera and the fine arts serving as recurring motifs throughout the game, and a level of technology comparable to that of the Second Industrial Revolution. Railroads are in place and a coal mining operation is run in the northern town of Narshe. Additionally, several examples of modern engineering and weaponry (such as a chainsaw, power drill, and automatic crossbow) have been developed in the Kingdom of Figaro. However, communication systems have not reached significant levels of development, with letters sent by way of carrier pigeon serving as the most common means of long-distance communication.

One thousand years before the events of the game, three goddesses who served as the source of all magic in the world were at war with one another in a conflict known as the War of the Magi. This quarrel released magical energy into the world, transforming any human touched by it into an Esper, who were used as soldiers by the goddesses. Eventually repenting of the war, the goddesses returned free will to the Espers and turned themselves to stone. Their only request was that the Espers ensure their power remain sealed so that it could not be misused again.

After the war ended, the Espers departed to a hidden land, taking the statues of the gods with them and sealing the entrance to their world, leaving behind the remaining humans. Cut off from magic, the humans build a society based on technology. At the opening of the game, the most powerful technology is in the hands of the Empire, a cruel and expanding dictatorship led by Emperor Gestahl and his court magician Kefka. Approximately eighteen years before the events of the game begin, the barrier between the Esper's land and the rest of the world weakened. Soon after, Gestahl takes advantage of this and attacks the Espers' land, capturing several of them. Using the Espers as a power source, Gestahl initiated a research program to combine magic with machinery and infuse humans with magical powers, the result being a technology known as Magitek.

Kefka was infused with magic, becoming one of the prototypes in a line of soldiers called Magitek Knights. The process was still experimental in the prototype phase and as a result, Kefka's sanity was impaired. At the opening of the game, the Empire is on the verge of rediscovering the full potential of magic by reopening the gateway to the world of the espers. However, the Empire's rule is opposed by the Returners, a group of rebels seeking to overthrow the Empire and free its territories.

I only ask that flamwars don't start and no character bashing or story (that means the game :<) happens. :(

Alright, so let us discuss Final Fantasy VI, ask questions, seek help, share what we like about it and more ;P

I didn't write that, silly :P
I copy and pasted from a popular FF site. I'm gonna edit everything tomorrow, its pretty late here :)

Celes is clearly the best character. 8D

Anyways though, I could talk forever about how amazing VI is. Loved the characters, loved the plot, I don't really have any complaints about it. It's one of those games you can play over and over and it never gets old. =w=

I love Terra. I'm not particularly hot on having a female as the main character. That's something to be debated: who was the main character in FFVI. But the story sort of revolved around Terra's magic. Anyways...not a fan of female protagonists, but I liked Terra a lot. She's so mystical. =]

That's the point of the thread — to discuss Final Fantasy VI. :)

The main character (Or protagonist) is (So I think and the fact that she's appeared in Dissidia) would have to be Terra, or maybe Celes/Locke. But I'd like to say "Edgar" only 'cause he's my second favorite in the whole game :awesome:

So anyway, why do ya think Terra's mystical? I'd love to hear it because I really love discussing anything related to Final Fantasy VI with others or other fans. :D

Well I mean Terra is the *first* in-party protagonist in the whole series to be half human and half something else. Or maybe I'm totally wrong there. I never played anything before FFVI.

Ultimately...having a half-esper in your party is super neat. It's almost as neat as having Red XIII in your party, but this isn't about FFVII. =]

Ah, got ya. ^^

If you train her just right, you can have her immune to all element statues; holy, fire, ice, bolt and so on. Also with the Soul of Thamasa and the Gold Hairpin, she's gets really strong.

Plus, if you get the cursed shield and break the curse you can get her — or anyone else — unstoppable. :awesome:

Sabin (Vossler mentioned him) can be extremely powerful as well, even without Genji Glove. There are about three or two other ways.

(I agree with you on that one, only I think Terra being in a party is a lot better, but Red XIII is the freakin' bomb!)

I'm kind of so-so about non human characters.

The best non humans came from FFVI, FFVII, and FFIX.
The best moogles come from VI and IX; they had personality. Mog and Terra were super awesome. Red XIII and Cait Sith are two of my favorite characters in the whole series; for some reason, they're very memorable. I'm not really sure what to think of Quina, as the playable non human in FFIX, but...the game was full of different races, and they were cute enough. :glomp:

The worst non humans came from FFVIII (did that game even have any?) and FFXII.
Did FFVIII have non humans? The only ones I can think of are the Shumis. I thought that the Moombas and the Pupus were cute but they didn't play a big enough roll. FFXII was too...serious; I enjoy the gameplay, but not even the main protagonists were fun.

That leaves FFX then...of all the games I've played. I didn't get on with Khimari very well (as a main character), but the game did have a fair variety of non numans.

Did I ramble?

Dark and Divine in another thread about FFVI said:
My favourite FF game, along with VII and IX.

I loved the plot, the characters, the battle sistem, the music...basically everything.

It had a lot of memorable moments, like the Opera Scene and the destruction of the world (That little cutscene with a space view of the planet with continents being teared apart is just breathtaking).

And it has one of my favourite themes of the series (Dancing Mad)

It also has my favourite FF female protagonist (Terra) and one of my three favourite characters of all media in general (Kefka).

I'm a big FFVI nerd. Easily one of my favorite in the series.

Cecil from FFIV

Sabin (Vossler mentioned him) can be extremely powerful as well, even without Genji Glove. There are about three or two other ways.

Sabin is a big fan favorite, and I like him too, but pound for pound, compared to all of the other characters and all of the possibilities within the characters, Sabin is actually pretty low tier.

Yes, he may be the weakest, but he is defiantly strong if trained well.

Have you've train Gau to the max and well with the Espers? If you get him all of his Rage skills, he is also very powerful. I beat Kefka with him, Relm and Moogle. Really easy that way :awesome:

Oh right. Wasn't Cecil some kind of moon man? O.o

Yes, he is half Lunarian, I do believe.

I was partway up a replay some months ago, I never finished it the first time. Which is a shame.

If there's any game that Square should make a remake of (or a minor graphical update, perhaps), it's this.

You can get it for the PSP which is even better. I don't have an itouch. I haven't ascended to that level of existence yet.

:awesome: Fan agreement.

I would like a complete remake (without them utterly screwing up the story line) or as you said, a minor graphic update. Like actual CGI movies.

It would be the bee's knees if I could see the part at the end when everyone gathers up in front of Kefka. That scene is awesome

This reminds me of when people get in debates about who is the main heroine in FFVII, Aerith or Tifa? I think they share the main heroine role... the creators have actually stated that for FFVII, but haven't for FFVI (as far as I kow) but I think it's obvious that they both share the role... I mean it's not like that's a bad thing, so I don't get why people insist on picking a side and being so adament about making their point. Celes and Terra both contribute a lot to the story-line and both have very important roles... is it so bad that the game have two heroines? XD

I think that's part of the fun of FF6, and what sets it apart. Most FFs have an obvious main character whom you're playing as for most, if not all, of the game. Many FFs have pre-set parties, and you're stuck with certain characters during certain points of the game.

FF6 is cool because for the most part, you aren't forced to play as any particular character. On top of that, depending on whom you bring to different parts of the game, you might see an extra cutscene or get a different conversation.

That being said, I still say Terra would be the main character of FF6. You start the game with her, and you can't end the game without her. ... Well you can, but she shows up anyway.

For some reason, when I first played FFVI all those many years ago, I really wanted Locke and Terra to be a couple. I guess it's because I percieved both of them as the main characters. And now that I play it many years later, I can't seem to figure out who the main character is. I mean, I think the game revolves around Terra and her magick, but she's also kind of distant (somehow) from the rest of the characters.

The reason I'm led to believe that Celes and Terra are both the main characters, is because it mostly focuses on their life, their drama and their pains and needs.

Its been said (in one of the adventure guide books I do believe) that Celes and Terra are so close (was in the Empire before the crown) that they were considered "sisters". But Celes felt guilt (this is were it gets fishy) for not trying to stop Kefka from putting the crown on Terra.

Another part of one of the guide books said that Terra was only 14-15 when the crown was put on and she went through training while an reliable source says that she was kept up in bars in the laboratories under going hurtful experiments much like what happened to Maduin and the rest of the Espers.

Ah, a post I will have to agree with. That was the first thing (second really) that made me love this game above others (V and IV very close). You could literally play the story with any team you wished. Except for when you wake up with Celes.

After that, totally freedom. And as you said, if you leave Terra and beat Kefka, she ends up coming and saving the day like a true hero :glomp:

For some reason, when I first played FFVI all those many years ago, I really wanted Locke and Terra to be a couple. I guess it's because I percieved both of them as the main characters. I remember when my brother bought the game for me. I shared a birthday with my younger brother and we both loved VII and VIII, so we asked our parents for another FF title, this time older.

(now in the army :( ) went out to Hastings and bought us the Anthology version of FFVI & FFV, even the classic version for the SNES.

I played V first because I loved the older looking titles more and I remember saying that If I played FFVI, I'd be the master in the house.

I got half way through V when my younger brother couldn't beat a certain part in the game. So I helped him out and totally owned all the bosses my first try. So I though, "why not" and started my own file.

When you (Locke) first met up with Terra I rolled my eyes. My brother asked why I scoffed and I said: "Well, I was hoping for a title that didn't really have a romance in it that influenced the story line" and he said: "Actually, that guy turns out to like another girl-"

"Don't ruin" I said and played on, about to give up on the game until I saw Edgar and then Celes. I remember I named Celes "Shego" because she reminded me of her. Later on, after all the scenes and after I mastered the game, I was "hm...turned out the main guy loved another person he didn't see in the beginning of the game" and I was shocked. Most titles did different, even when they weren't FF titles.

Sorry for the long post :awesome:

I love talking FFVI to others :glomp:

So just beat this game for the first time and thought I'd bump this thread with my tl;dr thoughts on it 'cause this is a good fucking game and you people need to talk about it more.

:awesome:

Story: Typical FF stuff with the power of love and saving the world. Sometimes I found I couldn't stop playing because I had to find out what happens next; sometimes I found it just boring, which has to do with...

Gameplay: Hate on XIII all you want, but the battle system was fun, which is something I can't really say for pretty much every other FF game, VI (and VII) included. As with all the other numbered FFs I've played, I found myself often running away from battles just because they were over more quickly.

That said, I liked the Espers/magic learning system and the dual relic slots, which I found allowed for a lot customization of character roles. I also liked the variety given by the different special skills, though I found some skills a lot more useful than others.

I also found the game got a helluva lot easier once it went to the World of Ruin. The boss on the floating continent (Atma? IIRC) was fucking hard, like holy shit my face hard, but then everything after that was a breeze. The hardest fight in the second half was the one against that evil painting, because it possessed Celes, who was pretty much invincible to everything and it took me ten minutes to kill her. It was a bit of a challenge when I had to split up my 4 main guys (Celes, Sabin, Edgar, Locke) for the final dungeon, but once I stopped caring about the other people in my party and just let them stay dead it was a breeze.

The Kefka fight in particular was almost disappointingly easy (Celes with Gem Box/Quick: ULTIMA ULTIMA ULTIMA ULTIMA osmose ULTIMA ULTIMA ULTIMA etc). I wasn't particularly high level (low/mid 40s) so...I dunno, maybe I just got lucky, but yeah.

Characters: The thing about this game is it had so many characters I didn't give a shit about half of them. That said, CELES IS POSSIBLY THE BEST THING EVER. I liked Locke, Edgar, Sabin, Terra, Setzer, and Shadow, Cyan was okay, but the rest can go diaf and I really wouldn't be too upset. It's somewhat disconcerting for me to play an FF and feel so little investment in so many characters, but the good ones made up for it.

Back to Celes - seriously one of my all time favourite characters. The Opera is probably my favourite FF scene of all time, and coupled with the Solitary Island section, her defiance in the face of Kefka's madness the Empire's corruption, her desperation to prove her loyalty, her longing to be accepted for who she is - easily the most fascinating character in the game.

Kefka is just fucking awesome. There's something refreshing about a nice, simplistic, totally batshit villain who just wants to destroy things because he can, and a couple of his lines made me lol.

Music: Ohhhhh fuck yes. Overall I liked VII's soundtrack more but this game had some great tracks. Here's some linkspam as I gush over some of my faves.

I've had the Distant Worlds version of this (Opera - Maria and Draco) on my iPod for a while and always liked it, but now I love it so much more.

Possibly my favourite track from the whole soundtrack.

Really captured Kefka's craziness. Makes me imagine being trapped in some evil toy factory with the evil toy master swinging around from the rafters and grinning like a fucking lunatic.

This theme gave more background on Shadow's character than the game itself.

Aw yeah jazz it up. Impossible for me to listen to it and not start tapping my foot.

Other random stuff: I loved how just a few simple sprite animations could bring so much to the characters.

I didn't know that there was a 'fast fish' and a 'slow fish' and that if you fed Cid the fast one he would live. When I went down to the shore I only saw one fish - a slow one - so I just grabbed it. And he died, and Celes threw herself off a cliff. And after that I looked at the walkthrough and went...well oops. XD

I have never laughed so hard at an ability as I did at 'Bum Rush'. Lmfao.

Shoulda left for the world map and grinded on Solitary Island. The encounters give great experience.
