Munatik
Beacause I am a puppet
Usually when I pop a new game into a console or my PC, I have some general idea of what to expect. It may be a franchise I'm already familiar with, or one that gives a clear inkling in the title and/or on the front and back cover. And, before I buy, I usually make an effort to inform myself about a game that piques my interest.
There are, however, some games I've played and, minus having done the proper research, made me go
To be fair, most of these were games I did not purchase myself but received as gifts.
One example is a little-known game called Treasures of the Deep. It was a Christmas gift. I had not even heard of it, but based on the cover:
I thought, "Aww, this will be a cute little underwater adventure."
Wrong.
Well, okay, the training level/noob cave and the first couple levels were sort of what you might expect. You dive after a valuable treasure, and naturally there are obstacles like sharks and pirates. I was cool with that, though I was a bit disconcerted by the fact that besides using nets and a harpoon gun, you could also choose to blow your opponents into bloody bits with various missiles and mines.
But suddenly, it goes from being a nice little adventure to something quite dark, creepy, and even downright scary. It starts when you have to raid a terribly dark underwater tomb and have to fight a mutant fish. Then a real story randomly kicks in about a terrorist plot that you have to unravel and defeat in some of the darkest oceans on Earth. There's even a mission that involves recovering bodies after a plane crash. To top it off, there is also a bonus level where you go on bloody little rampage as a great white shark, ripping apart cute little seals and humpback whales alike for points.
What the hell, Namco? What happened to my nice little underwater adventure? Instead of Treasures of the Deep, it's more like Terrorists of the Deep. Don't get me wrong, it was still a pretty fun game, but WTF.
Okay, so what I want to know is: have any of you had a similar experience? The game can be obscure or not, the surprise minor or major. Share!
