General Fuckery

Hey guys,

In an effort to raise activity (read: the good kind of activity), we've contemplated reducing the amount of sections, concentrating activity. Amongst the sections named, some of the (superfluous) sections in the RP section were named, and these are currently undergoing review.

Next to that, General Fuckery was named as well. It's low on activity (with most posts being from several days slash more than a week ago), and even though I have to agree that it has some threads that were amusing, there's a lot of them that were just hardly worth the effort of opening, some provocative, some argumentative, etc. All that were things we specifically said we didn't want the section to have.

As such, we're considering shutting it down, in an effort to declutter the forums index and concentrate activity back to the other sections.

And yeah, I know RP has relatively even less activity, but it compensates that with quality.

We'll also move some sections around, to give them some kinda preference / organization, but you'll see that yourself, nothing serious.

I wasn't really that upset about it XD But the stuff in there now, if you ask me makes even less sense half the time. Besides we did fine without it. and it didn't become the huge success most people thought it would be.

maybe instead of closing GF you should just run it the way it was supposed to be run, so people can do light-hearted off-topic conversation without having to worry about a mod closing their topic because it's 'spam' (i.e. the mod is in a bad mood that day). It was getting enough activity at first because the only threads that were getting closed really were stupid, but the last time I bothered looking, half the stuff in there got closed, and that kind of killed any enthusiasm I might have had to check.

disclaimer: I realise there were a lot really stupid Atticus thread, but even then not all of those deserved to get closed.

It should just be replaced with a goddamn shoutbox, imho.

Actually, I'm gonna agree with Road and Kenobi here. My mind's been changed.

Kenobi and Road raised the good point that by opening a chat box, we can free up the board of the spam, since the shout box will catch it.

With that, we'll close GF, and hell, the Chit Chat thread for good. That makes the most sense and is a fair trade.

That's a terrible idea. Just because there's a shoutbox doesn't mean people won't have impulses to make off-topic posts. There's a huge difference between a real-time chat and a relaxed thread where you can toss off responses on an hour-by-hour basis. The two aren't even remotely comparable.

I still haven't gotten a rational explanation of why spam is a thing to be avoided. Light-hearted conversation in one part of the board may just encourage people to make more serious posts in another. At least, I find I'm a lot more willing to make long serious replies to a board if there's a place to let off steam on the same board as well. And my eight years of message board administration indicate I'm hardly the only one.

Spamming in a shout box =/= spamming in a thread. It just doesn't have the same effect. Besides, there has been a number of quality spam posts made (referring to FCF, but it's not exclusive) that are fun to go back and look at. A shoutbox, however, is not something you can just go and look back on. Unless you has powahs.

Thing with memorable spam is that it's flooded out by a hundred posts following it. It's only memorable to those that happen to see it when it occurs.

And you could say 'lulz spam archive', but it too would be flooded.

But I'd just like to point out that GF's activity has been terribly low - lower even than the RP section, which seems to be reserved for literate elitist bastards only. It seems the literate elitist bastard's activity exceeds that of those in favor of a spam section, in whichever form it occurs.

As to the closing of some of the sections.... .... just leave open one subforum, call it the ultimate subforum of death and destruction and see what comes of it.
