General PC Gaming Thrad

We don't have a thread for this (unless we do, in which case someone alert me and I'll get rid of this one). I had to resist the urge to put "master race" in the title.

Anyway I came across this video which is not satire. I repeat not satire.

and this one:

This is the same guy who attacked the XBox pres on twitter for saying he was looking forward to Uncharted 4 XD:

Anyway I wanted to post that video and thought a PC gaming thread would be an appropriate place for it because lulz, then I realised we didn't have one, and now here we are. Most random thread creation reason ever? Who knows.

I couldn't follow what he was saying, is he eating toffee?

But what he said was....er.... don't play PC games because people download games er....

so... thats like don't watch films because some people download films...or something.

And all that stuff about basements, I mean is it any better to be sat on your mums couch surrounded by empty powerade bottles and wotsits, while she has to sit in the back room and watch the small tv that doesn't even have sky on it? So she can only watch QVC yankee candle specials?

Er. No really I've never understood the console/pc xbox/ps etc etc loyalty/rivalry nonsense. To me it's like these people should really be supporting football teams instead - it's that kind of mentality.

But anyway, he sounds a bit simple.

Is this thread, or the first video you posted, anything to do with today's news?

Microsoft to unify PC and Xbox One platforms, ending fixed console hardware

Eesh. I mean, exclusivity is already fairly pointless in this generation given that both consoles are effectively PC's anyway, but that's not good for the XB1. I guess now if you own a PS4 and a PC you don't have to worry about any kind of exclusivity anymore (except Nintendo but they're different), but I don't see this as a good thing for the competitive console market.

I was really hoping the XB1 would up its game a little and the NX would fail horrendously prompting
NINTENDO GOES HANDHELD ONLY AND MAKES CONSOLE GAMES FOR PLAYSTATION
, but a lot's riding on Ninty now to perform well with their new console. In terms of a healthy competitive market I mean.

It's like what's happening with nVidia/AMD graphics cards. nVidia is completely dominating the market, to the point where AMD's cards are barely competing. And that's with AMD winning the console deal for this entire generation :/

But on the other hand, as someone who owns a decent gaming PC but not an XB1, I think it's pretty good news. :) I'm looking forward to trying the free-to-play Forza "Apex" taster/demo/whatever when it comes out.

Re: Nvidia vs. AMD - AMD seems to be the far less douchey company, and I would have liked to have bought one of their cards instead of an NV, but they draw much more power (I only have a 450W PSU) and their Linux drivers are notoriously bad (which is what I was using at the time), so it wasn't really an option. In terms of pure performance (on Windows), though, I think they manage to hold their own against Nvidia.

I mean yeah it's good news for those of us with a gaming PC, but it's not good for the gaming market overall IMO. I suppose it's premature of me to assume that, we'll see how future sales go.

Tbh the only home console I need is my Wii U. Every other game I'd want I can just get on my PC. And I'd rather not have the NX fail horribly. We don't want Sony having a monopoly on the home console industry.

I agree with Lex over all I'm not a fan of a unified platform for Xbox. At least not the way they are currently approaching it with the Universal Windows Platform.

UWP itself is an extremely strict way of enabling DRM. You get 0 access to the .exe, you can count out modding of any sort. Since no access to the .exe you can't use steam overlay for it, meaning no steam controller (if your into that) etc.

It also locks you into an OS you may not want. Want to play the new gears of war game on pc? Get windows 10 to grab it off the Windows Store.

You can already see this in action currently with a game called Gigantic. It used to be available when it was in closed beta on any Windows OS. Then MS started throwing money at them and now its only playable on Win10 and has to be launched from their store. Because reasons.

As for variant SKU's of Xbone for differing performance. That's nice I guess? Stupid but nice.

"Hey guys remember that Console you paid 100$ more for at launch but had worse performance than its cheaper counterpart? Hey well guess what. You can throw more money at it so that it might become on par with the competitor"

I've always loved PC gaming and being able to purchase and create the pc just the way I wanted. On the other hand it was always nice knowing I could buy a console and for the most part be guaranteed to play a video game, albeit probably at garbage framerates.

Xbone trying to be a K-Mart Steam Machine undermines one of its few remaining good qualities in this console generation.

Re: OP, Christ, there are some colossal fuckwads on YouTube. Makes my head hurt.

At the very least, I see this decision to be pushing a lot of genuine future backwards compatibility ala Nintendo's games. My take on it is that Microsoft seem to be trying to leverage the Windows brand in order to attract customers to the Xbox, which works well on paper since Windows is technically one of the largest brands in human history :monster:

Long-term though, I don't think it matters a whole lot. If the box continues to be priced at a mid-range PC level (which it is), and it supports discs in a console-like fashion, it just means more levels of buy-in for consumers as opposed to a decreasing price point for a fixed quantity. While competitors produce the same box with the same level of power, at some point people will wait for an incrementally-better box and bite when it's both decent in value and convenience.
I think it's an interesting choice to make. At least if one company was going to have the bazillion dollars to make such a move, it would be Microsoft. It'll be interesting to see how they can turn a console into an incrementally-improved PC, as opposed to the relative non-starter of a PC turned into a console box (re: Steam Boxes), but maybe it might be different if there's just a single point of design and make, as opposed to a thousand different brands producing a fuckton of random pre-built PCs.

Of course, this boils down to the fact that Microsoft can generate excuses to put out revisions that cover for hardware deficiencies in the initial design brief, which has basically been the albatross around their neck in sales ever since Year One, :monster:.

Since no access to the .exe you can't use steam overlay for it, meaning no steam controller (if your into that) etc.

I agree in that I think the lack of modding might be a problem, but man does the Steam Controller feel like a hot mess of shitty garbage. To be a little more on-topic, I feel like so far Valve's track record with hardware has been pretty poor despite their incredible profile of software. They keep relying on third parties to produce their non-gaming content (understandable since they don't seem to have the manpower for it), and it keeps biting them in the ass.

I had a dream about the Steam Controller last night, of all things. I tried it out in a store and basically repeated exactly what I've read in reviews: that regardless of its technical merits (or otherwise), it doesn't feel as well-made as Xbox or Playstation controllers. But I liked the triggers on the back of it. I have weird dreams sometimes. :monster:

Windows might be one of the largest brands in history but you won't find many people who are actually enthusiastic about it. For most people, it's something they just have to have.

I'll be honest, I like Windows 10 more than I thought I would, and after having used it for a while I'm less inclined to run back to 7. I can see how the XBox app/ windows store feel intuitive to access and such. It remains incredibly unlikely that I'll buy an "XBox game", because I've developed an intense dislike for anything that doesn't come through Steam (looking at you SE and EA) even though I'm starting to become disillusioned with Steam in general.

On that note, I'm currently beta testing the PS4's 3.5 system software, and when that launches it'll have PC remote play and a Windows 10 app to boot. Looking forward to seeing the glorious logo on my start menu :monster:

For now, the foul play app is available.

Cross-posted from the PS4 thread because I didn't want to derail it any further than it already had been:

Of course it's related to that. But you can't pretend this decision to "unify platforms" isn't code for "our consoles haven't sold enough so we're releasing everything on PC now too". The knock-on effect being "hey Playstation, after years of telling you to go fuck yourself let's allow players to play together since older online titles will be unplayable if we don't piggyback on your userbase too".

Also there's talk of them selling these games on PC exclusively through the Windows store and using the UWP API to block certain applications. They've tried to go in that direction before and nobody will be surprised if they do so again. Epic are going nuts about it. Here's a Jimsplanation:

I don't think you can pretend that the sole reason (or even the main reason) for this move is due to the idea that "our consoles haven't sold enough", especially given that this has been Microsoft's initiative back when Windows 8 was still a thing and the 360 was at its peak.
Also important to note is that XBO growth is still paced well ahead of the 360 within the same time frame, and the userbase growth is just as robust - the only problem is that it's not as meteoric as the PS4's (which I'm pretty sure is breaking some sort of history record), and no first-party platform holder is going to boast sales data out loud when they're sitting in second place to their direct competitor. The idea that Microsoft are somehow afraid that their userbase isn't big enough for software retention is anecdotal at best.

Another thing is that Tim Sweeney (not as a representative of his company, but as his own man) wrote a much less dramatic article on the nature of UWPs and how to make them A Good Thing, after he cooled down post-Guardian editorial. As it stands currently developing through the UWP system is entirely optional and side-loading of apps through non-Windows Store means is enabled by default (a change they implemented in an earlier build of Windows 10).
Even Sweeney mentions that the potential is there for better security and better ease of use for those who aren't willing to engage in the fiddly bits of PC gaming (aka everyone who isn't a professional or an enthusiast aka a large portion of the gaming population), but there just needs to be more time and explanation involved in Microsoft's future policy. In its current state the "walled garden" that Gabe Newell complained about way back when and which is being echoed here is just the same level of conjecture based on what could have happened last time.

Durante's complaints and issues are entirely valid (the lack of moddability is a major sticking point which continues to concern me) but even on the aspect of performance problems, progress is being made. Things like forced V-sync and lack of SLI support are already being directly addressed. Rise of the Tomb Raider was pretty much the very first AAA game to be released alongside the current app-focused structure of the Windows Store, so it doesn't seem implausible that problem elements will be improved over time.

Plus, given the overwhelming financial sucess (/s) from their attempt to lock out RT from Win32 useability completely, I strongly doubt that Microsoft are going to somehow abolish or phase out Win32 application development anytime soon, much less even attempt to shut out competition from other digital distribution channels like Steam (which practically holds a monopoly on the PC gaming space at this point). Seems like a really distant point at the bottom of this incredibly theoretical slippery slope given their complete failure the first time around, unless (as Sweeney said) the UWP API incentivises its use with the same openness and a similar degree of ease of access that the Win32 system uses.
