Looks like J.J.Abrams' next film is gonna be another part of this Cloverfield thing he's doing: http://www.thewrap.com/jj-abrams-god-particle-next-film-cloverfield-series-exclusive/

“God Particle” is about a team of astronauts who make a “shocking discovery” and end up fighting for survival in what is described as an altered reality. Julis Onah (“The Girl Is in Trouble”) directed from a script by Oren Uziel. It stars David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ziyi Zhang, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Brühl and Chris O’Dowd.

The film is set to open wide on Feb. 24, 2017 — though footage from the project is expected to be presented to reporters on Thursday in New York. Studio head Brad Grey will personally present highlights from the upcoming slate at the event, and do a similar event on Nov. 2 in Los Angeles on the Paramount lot.

The article's insinuation that Cinematic Universes are uncharted territory is patently false. Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino have both been fostering their own continuities for over 20 years, and Hitchcock linked many of his movies about as overtly as Abrams. Other examples are Manhunter/Silence of the Lambs, The Fugitive/U.S. Marshals, Hunt for Red October/Clear and Present Danger/The Sun of all Fears/The Patriot/Jack Ryan, the Evil Dead trilogy, Soldier/Blade Runner, Knocked Up/This is 40, and so on.

Not to poopoo Cloverfield, I liked both films. They don't need to be groundbreaking to be interesting.

Off topic, but isn't it implied that Alien also takes place in the same universe as Blade Runner? Something like the bios of the Nostromo crew mention people working for Tyrell corp at one point :monster:

Huh! And Firefly was intended to be a prequel series to Alien: Resurrection (besides word of God evidence there is the Weyland/Utani symbol on the turret in Serenity Valley). Okay I now have a "River is a Replicant" theory.

That's a pretty diverse cast, and yay for Ziyi Zhang, it feels like forever since she's been in something (dubbed or not) <3

This was pretty entertaining. It had some weird moments that felt Deus Ex-y more than something that properly meshed with the setting
Why did the Foosball things suddenly spin like crazy? Why did the picture of the crew on the station change, if it was still their station? Why did Chris O'Dowd's arm keep moving after their parallel universe crew crashed, and how did his parallel universe counterpart know they needed to look inside the dead Russian? Why did Monk die from one shot, but the German survived two? Also, I know it's a budget thing, but space stations spin to simulate gravity, and the design of the spinning sections on this was utterly pointless.

Overall it was an enjoyable time, and starts stronger than it ends (aside from maybe the VERY end). Much like J.J. Abrams' other stuff, it's more interesting for some conceptual stuff than it is about understandably connecting into the fabric of what came before it.

I enjoyed it. Though as always I'm ok with turning my brain off and going for a ride. Which often leads to me letting a lot of things slide (i.e. I enjoyed the Death Note Netflix movie).

That said I agree a ton with you X.

There was so much stuff that just happens and theres no real reasonable way to even make it... make sense?

Basically all of the strange phenomena on the ship can't just be hand waved away by dimension hopping. As you noted the picture or the foosball table. But even other stuff like how Mundy lost his arm in the wall? The fuck is that? Volky's eye thing, or his migraine?

I think the displacement stuff can be handwaved away though, atleast the Worms and the Gyro. I'm not sure how Jensen ends up on the Shephard though, maybe I misunderstood but it seems her Shephard had crashed way before the main one ended up in their universe(like 14 months earlier right?). So did it just pull her out of that universes past as well?

Regarding the design of the Shephard, to add to your point. How in the fuck do they even get into their cabins? The cabins are all in the spinning portion and things hauling a metric ton of ass. How can they ever safely connect and enter that haha.

Out of curiosity how do you guys feel about Cloverfield 4? It's been reported that the movie is done filming and will be taking place in WW2.

https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/cloverfield-4-takes-place-ww2-filming-finished-already/

Considering the events in this film, especially with Donal Logues dialogue on the news at the beginning, Cloverfield seems primed to have an infinite amount of possibilities now.

I'm fine if they do totally crazy weird stuff with it at this point. I just think that with their ARGs and other stuff they originally had a LOT of potential to make a well-interconnected universe of plot threads and other fun things, but at this point, they're clearly incapable of doing so, so I'm ok if they're just launching full-steam-ahead with the "crazy scenarios because of reasons" form of interconnection.
