Looks like they've pulled the trigger on not using his script anymore either (thus having to undo all the pre-production work done based on it).

That's not necessarily script-related. If they don't have a director lined up, it doesn't make sense to put costs into preproduction when you don't know when filming will actually start. It doesnt make sense to pay for a bunch of work if nothing past that stage is set up yet.
