Guiness' Top 50 Game Characters

Well, technically it's not Guiness' picks, but rather voting arranged by Guinness. Nothing mind-blowing, some things are interesting about it, given that this was just for popular vote. I'm surprised that certain characters remain on the radar enough for the general public to vote for them such as Spyro, and even Pac-Man. I'm glad to see Sonic still makes the top 10.

On the other hand, none of those Call of Duty characters have any business being on this list, sorry. I also don't think Master Chief deserves the #3 spot but that's at least more arguable that the CoD characters. I don't think even Nathan Drake should be quite as high as he is.
I don't think Ash Ketchum or Naruto should count, either.

*shrug* No big deal or anything, I thought maybe its interesting to see what the people like these days :monster:

1. Mario (Donkey Kong, Nintendo, 1981)
2. Link (The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo, 1986)
3. Master Chief (Halo: Combat Evolved, Microsoft, 2001)
4. Solid Snake (Metal Gear, Konami, 1987)
5. Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII, Square, 1997)
6. PAC-Man (PAC-Man, Namco, 1980)
7. Lara Croft (Tomb Raider, Eidos 1996)
8. Gordon Freeman (Half-Life, Valve, 1998)
9. Kratos (God of War, Sony, 2005)
10. Sonic (Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega, 1990)
THE REST

I'm pretty much ok with the whole top ten. In my opinion a few could be rearranged, but what's important is that they are all up there. Master Chief deserves his spot imo.

What surprises me are the CoD characters like you said Force. I've played all of the games and NONE of those characters are interesting or memorable enough to put in this list.

The other thing is Commander Shepard. Like where the fuck is Shepard on the list?

There are atleast 20 characters on the list that are FAR less awesome, and perhaps shouldn't even be on the list in comparison to shep, but w/e.

Seems to be a mishmash of iconic video game characters and LOOK AT ME THIS IS MY FAVORITE CHARACTER HE R BEST EVARRRR ignoring anything said character may or may not have done plot-wise.

I mean really, I can't take a list seriously that doesn't have Commander Shepard, Lucas, Ness, or Naoto Shirogane.

As soon as I see manga-turned-videogame characters I laugh at any list.

Also, no Layton? No Phoenix Wright? Dante is below CoD and GTA characters? Altair below Naruto? Srsly?

Meh.

I think Dante should have been higher up... Sephiroth shouldn't be on the list at all. Lots of other things I disagree with. Meh, pretty much what Aki said.

Captain Price is the only COD character that really deserved a place, and MUCH lower down than that.

But no Phoenix Wright or Doom Marine? No King of All Cosmos, John Marston, Bayonetta or Commander Shepard?

NO FUCKING PYRAMID HEAD???

Poor show list. Poor show.

I always named him Ash because Red is a silly name, but still, I agree he shouldn't be on the list. (Not for your screenname of course, I just mean for when I would play :monster:)

Sephiroth's presence on the list shouldn't be a surprise - again this was by popular vote. Call of Duty characters still surprise me because not a single one of them is memorable. The only one I remember is Soap and that's only because his name is Soap. And Celes, Naruto should most certainly not be on there...but Altair isn't all that great a character. He's been improved posthumously, but in his own game he's not particularly interesting :monster:

As for Shepard, I dunno, I'm not sure I'd include her on the list because she isn't...a character. She's you, or whoever you feel like pretending to be. I feel like giving it to Shepard would be akin to giving it to the "hero" of Oblivion or Dragon Age. The only difference is the character has a defined name.
At the same time, like I said, I dunno. Because the likes of Mario, Sonic, and Pac-man aren't "characters" as we tend to think of them either. And Link doesn't even speak. But still they are in a very different kind of game, thre's no call for them to really have a personality. Shepard does have a personality, it's just not a fixed one, so therefore is kind of hard to pin down as a character.

That said, this was done by popular vote and Mass Effect is a popular game, so I'm still surprised the Commander's not on there.

oh yeah, im sorry, i didn't realize what huge contributions to their games with their personalities the prince and a fucking sackboy are.

...Did you just....stop reading before the next paragraph or something?
why even write a paragraph describing how shepard is a self-insert thing when a sackboy is even more of an avatar than shep

ur argument holds no water is all im saying besides the fact that this list was compiled by twelve year olds who don't enjoy games with too much thinking

Actually Shepard has a static personality. All the morality has to do with it are the moral decisions you make along the way. It's still a preestablish character.

It's not different than the decision you have to make for link, when it comes to the first fork in the road; whether to go left or right. You control the character, but you can't impose on who they are.

You got to take these things with a grain of salt, that and my list would probably be greatly different from any of your lists, and so on, etc. These things are made up for attention and controversy.

I'm...sorry I don't recall exactly where I advocated Sackboy's placement on the list....

Eh, I don't know. Without trying to sound too philosophical isn't making those kinds of decisions exactly what determines the character? I dunno, letting someone go or killing them seems different than whether you go left or right first.

just that shepard not being on there was understandable because of a lack of personality.

But what part of "I'm still surprised the Commander's not on there" says that Shepards absence is understandable? I said that I didn't know if I would include Shepard on the list. I don't know why that resulted in the sarcastic remark referring to a point that I didn't make.

Soap McTavish didn't even get a personality until the second game.

tbh Price should be switched with Soap and Cole should be switched with Marcus.

Soap was a non speaking character in the first and then even in the second it wasn't like you spend the entire game appreciating how his voice booms over the radio telling you to take out the enemy quietly.

Naruto? Really? That's sad. Why would they even put someone like him on the list? I always thought Naruto sucked as a character. There's got to be someone else they could put instead of him...

And yay. Spyro and Crash made the list.

Have any of you noticed that a large majority of the characters that made the list are ones we're all familar with, like Link, Mario and Cloud? I was looking at the full list, and a good portion of them are older ones.

Yeah this is bullshit. Even though you can decide what shepard says at times, the character still has a defined personality(hell, you could argue he/she can have three if you play as Paragon, Renegade, or a mix of both) of its own as stated by Bioware themselves.

Whatever impact the player has on Shepard's choices and ultimately who the character is are minimal. Whether you do it as a badass or a generally nice space Marine, Shepard is still the savior of the Citadel and the advocate of humanity.

People give these games too much credit for their superficial "choices" and customization. Shepard is not you, and the games generally progress down the same paths no matter what you do. You are heavily confined to the dialogue and decisions the game restricts you to, and have very little actual freedom with the character itself. The game simply lets you choose which version of Shepard you play as, you don't really make your own.

Of course I don't know why I'd expect someone who didn't play the first game to know that :monster:

That said these lists are garbage and I never understand why people give them the time of day. These threads always consist of nothing but bitching about how stupid the lists are, when we can all just assume it's stupid and not even waste a minute thinking about it.
