Help? JORG & JINT Script Comparison

Instead of immediately jumping on the translation giants, I thought I'd give the novices a chance to shine.

I am currently working on the page that compares the Japanese script of FFVII's initial release (JORG) and its second release, FFVII International (JINT). Some parts require translation commentary to be understood by the non-Japanese speakers, others do not.

- CURRENT DRAFT (please excuse the sketchy commentary)

Compared to, say, a fully translated developer interview or a guide book section, there isn't much work needed here, though it is still essential to include a detailed commentary about the changes that were made JORG -> JINT.

You can Ctrl+F search for the word "TRANSLATION" in all caps to find the sections where I find retranslations and/or commentary to be vital. If the translation giants INSIST jumping on the task, then that's ok too of course. :monster:

While I am anxious to learn Japanese myself, there is just too much else going on right now for me to get on with that process and writing the commentary myself. One last KELP before I contact the big bosses.

One deal that I figured out by playing the submarine minigame, but which should be obvious to translators I reckon, is that in JORG Level 1 and Level 3 have you controlling the sonar yourself by pressing the Circle/OK button. If you don't use the sonar, you can't see mines and enemy subs. The others levels have the sonar on automatically. In all post-JORG releases, the sonar is never controlled by the player.

I think this "これに負けるとやばいそ" is "If we lose this, we're in danger/it's dangerous."

Changing to ぞ adds emphasis, like really dangerous

Just to take a small part, the following are simply what seems to be corrections of typos:

『プレミアムハード』を手にいれた! 『プレミアムハート』を手にいれた! Received “Premium Heart”!
('Hard' to 'Heart')

「どうやら事態が変わったらしい。 「どうやら事態が変わったらしい。 “The situation has changed.
奴らこれで終わりにする気らしい。 奴らこれで終わりにする気らしい。 Looks like the enemy is set to attack.
 これに負けるとやばいそ」 これに負けるとやばいぞ」 If we lose here, it’s over.”#
('so' to 'zo' -- 'so' like that would be meaningless AFAIK, whereas 'zo' is a masculine sentence ending particle that adds emphasis/assertion)

バブ パブ Icicle Inn Bar
('bub' to 'pub')

「おっ、ちゃかりしてるなあ! 「おっ、ちゃっかりしてるなあ! “What nerve!
もう地図をはがしてるんだな」 もう地図をはがしてるんだな」 You already tore down the map.”
('chakari' to 'chakkari' -- the latter is the correct spelling)

(On this subject, there was this in the article text:
All the mission selections are different, in that they lack the part within parentheses. Aside from that, nothing has been changed.)

Thank you both very much, Pixel and Hito. :D

I will update the draft tomorrow to actually look presentable. Right now I have a semi-headache and strained eyes though from working hard on other parts of the Versions Guide.

Unsure of the difference you pointed out. Do you mean that the original phrasing is odd and would be the equivalent of Yuffie saying
"this is making I dizzy"
instead of the more natural
"this is making me dizzy" ?

Pagoda (5TOWER)
シェイク
Shake
「ま、ちっとは大人になって帰ってきな!」
"So, the rude man has returned."
Is this a gender-neutral sentence? If so, I wonder if the translation could be "the rude woman" has returned. Shake has a tendency to express dislike towards Yuffie.

Shake
“Heh! Punk.
I'm more of an adult than some bimbo girl!”

...

Shake
“'bout the only thing you do really good is breathe!
Are you sure you wanna fight?”

...

Shake
“She IS a kid.”

Is there any way that knowledge of the context can change this translation?

In the final game, the materia isn't owned by a monster, but rather the ghost ship has a Guide Book which can then be traded for the Underwater materia.

Is there a way for the translation to be naturally changed to fit the actual sidequest, or is Shake's line hinting at a different form of the sidequest where the materia was to be acquired directly from the monster?

The translation is correct but it may not necessarily be hinting at a different form of the quest. "It seems a monster has it" may be meant to steer you in the right direction while also leaving room for the fact that you don't get the materia directly from the monster.

The "rude man" line is Adult. I just saw Cloud in the picture. It could be a comment on the fact that Yuffie is a "grown up".

「ま、ちっとは大人になって帰ってきな!」
This is 'come back when you've grown up a bit'.

Yuffie's line seems to have been changed to make the personal pronoun consistent with the rest of the game (アタシ).

Shake's lines about the materia all sounds like information that's been heard from someone/where else (・・・って、・・・らしい).

Haha It's so obvious looking at it now. I should really look at what's going on in the scene. I just figured they had arrived in the pagoda

Alright, almost finished.

What remains in the field script is a translation and analysis for this line which was changed. See full line in the article draft.

As for the battle/menu script, it would be neat to have a transcription and translation of the Choco/Mog summon description which was changed.
(I know already that the change is from "Non-Elemental" to "Wind".)

Highwind script:

Original -
If it's a chocobo you raised yourself, you can transport it to all sorts of places with the Highwind.

International -
Although you can only bring a chocobo onboard and transport it somewhere.

(On my phone, so I haven't looked at the surrounding lines.)

Choco/Mog:
敵全体に無属性ダメージ
Non-elemental damage to all enemies

敵全体に風属性ダメージ
Wind elemental damage to all enemies

(does 'wind elemental' sound right? idk)

Looking at some other things:

「あ、そうそう。 チョコぼうは使ってますか?」
“Oh, yeah, yeah. Are you using Chocobos?”

This isn't about chocobos, but if you are using the chocobo stable ('choco-bou' being a play on words, where 'bou' means a room, that you lose in English unless you did something like 'chocobox' or idk).

There is a slight difference 捜 and 探:
捜 is looking for something/someone that you have lost or has gone missing
探 is looking for something/someone that you want or would like

「ここが小屋なのです。
 ………ポジションカーソルより
There’s the hut/cabin.
………at the cursor position.

I would say the より here is 'from...', as in this is a message 'from the position cursor'.

Typo in the article text:

If you speak to the old woman in Under Junon when Tifa is leader
I don't know if '...is the leader' might sound better.
