[insert stock Rufus post game post here]

The impression I get from most FF games is that every town basically fends for itself. They're all fortified, travelling is dangerous due to all the wildlife, so everywhere is mostly on its own, even if they're nominally under control of somebody.

Yet...

Wutai had a sophisticated enough war machine to keep up with Shinra for years, enough people were buying coal to keep Corel running, complete with railroad. Cosmo Canyon has complex machinery.

I get the impression that the reason ShinRa and Wutai ever got into a war was because Wutai had possibly had expansionist ambitions, and began trying to take chunks out of the Central Continent. Unprepared for such an invasion, they turned to ShinRa for help.

Otherwise I can't really fathom why ShinRa would have a fuck-off nuke-canon pointed directly in the wrong direction against it's only known enemy, unless Wutai had already seriously taken enough of the CC to be a considerable nuke-worthy threat.

Bur yeah, there's a whole 2,000 years of precious little recorded history.

Nearly all FFs are fairly anachronistic, VII is especially so. But I don't think a focus on telling a particular story over worldbuilding is inherently flawed. XII has the best world-building (outside MMOs, perhaps), and it took me 10+ years and a remaster to get into it because I found the main cast and their quest so forgettable.

This could be it, I always tended to think that Wutai must have had a highly impressive navy that required such a shoreline defense. Junon and Costa del Sol are the only towns RIGHT on the water, after all. But yeah, it's still kinda lulzy.

Hopefully this exact kind of stuff gets an explanation in the Remake. At the very least, it would be nice to see some of what we already have in there fleshed out a bit more. What is the point of Fort Condor? Can we make the Junon cannon a bit more functional?

Honestly the main thing I want from this game is to be able to explore the world after "completing" the game. It was pretty sad that after beating the game you just go back to your last save. A lot of games did that back then, and some still do, but that's always been something I really wanted out of the game. I'm not always a fan of DLC, but when it comes to my favorite game of all time I would definitely welcome it.

As for the story, I wouldn't mind them expanding on Crisis Core but I would rather them just do a separate HD remaster of Crisis Core for PS4. They're going to have to expand the story a bit if they want each episode/part to be full length games anyways, so maybe expand on the characters we already have. I also don't want this to be the end of Final Fantasy VII. I'd welcome a sequel when all these remake parts are done with open arms.

Chrono Trigger did that and I still find it rather chilling.

Well, Lavos and Jenova seem to pick up a lot of traits from each other. I do think one thing it could be implied that Jenova is a corrupted goddess of a previous lifestream.

In Venezuela, the state oil company didn't take over the government and then run the country into the ground. In a centrally planned socialist economy the state owns and directs the means of production. The state may become a conglomeration, but that's different from a conglomeration becoming a state.

That's a technical difference. But once the public lose the democratic control over government policy, this difference largely stops meaning anything. A party starting out as democratically elected doesn't really mean anything after it's continued for years without the consent of the public. That's indistinguishable from a self-interested corporation.

I'm still gonna stick resolutely on the "Colonialist" idea, only with a company instead of a kingdom. It reminds me vividly of East India Company.

Colonialism isn't a particular economic system though, and so isn't mutually exclusive of either socialism or capitalism. The British Empire did colonialism through a heavily capitalist model, whereas the Soviet Union did colonialism through a state socialist model.

I don't see why they haven't already done this. You can only play Crisis Core on PSP. Not even on Vita (officially). It would seem like an obvious and easy thing to do leading up to the 7 remake.

Of course you can in principle. But a very large number of state-socialist countries have ended up as dictatorships, because complete centralized economic power makes it so easy for a dictator to take control.

Economic System is standard terminology: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_system
Depends how you define it as to how many there are, and whether you include potential systems as well as existing ones. You can include full communism and full anarcho-capitalism as economic systems if you're talking pure theory, but neither have ever worked and probably never would.

I sense this is slightly off topic now though!

It qualifies as story content, since we're probably going to get a healthy dose of history exposition across the trilogy.

I'll ask this here, but what are people expecting as far as unique abilities per character?

I hope Barret and Cid both swear a lot like in the original.
I hope Cloud's hair is just as spiky as in the original, but bounces now.
I hope Yuffie does her silly fake punching animation she does that they copied into Crisis Core too.
I hope Aerith has auto-life ability.
I hope Tifa still has anti-gravity magic ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Yeah, I always felt that way. Transcendental alien parasite nearly annihilates an ancient race, and subsequently greedy people try to harness the alien's power and get fucked over in the end by the alien. There's gotta be some cool crossover fic out there..

I don't remember Tifa having anti-grav- ohh. :monster:

Also in both stories an important member dies. However, Chrono Trigger you have the option of allowing that character to be brought back.

Lol I was mostly just goofing. I think Tifa should look like her Advent Children version (but in the original outfit). That was a good more realistic depiction of her character that still felt like the same person.
I don't know if they could realistically recreate the '2 watermelons in a plastic bag' situation from the original game's cutscenes without it seeming really out of place in the modern realistic style they're going for.

I hope they don't go for the two watermelons in a bag look. It was bad enough the way people made fun of her when she was just a bunch of polygons. Tifa is a profound character and its a pity so many people can't see past her tits.
