Finally watched it. Possibly the greatest "what if comic book villains existed in real life" movie of all time. It connects both to real societal issues and the comic book mythology in smart, fluid ways.
Bruce Wayne going down the pole in the playground was the greatest reference to 60s Batman that I have ever seen. 
Love it.
I suspect that a person not familiar with Batman may view the film as more bleak than those who are familiar with the mythos. Because the rest of us know the story, we know that some years later Batman will rise from the ashes and counteract the evils in society, no matter who is behind them. To those who know these fictional figures, the end of Joker is only the beginning of the story. Gotham's recovery will come, it just so happens that this movie doesn't show that part.
