Lore Summary of "The Kids Are Alright"

While reading through "The Kids Are Alright", I finally got tired of having to look up all the actual text of various lore snippets... And ended up making myself a lore document of what I thought was the relevant lore. Some of it is just general lore, other parts are more exclusive to the post-meteorfall world. Some of these definetly deserve threads of their own given what the lore is and how it intersects with the rest of the Compilation.

This is the "directory" for other posts in this thread as the lore doc ended up being ten pages long even in outline format...

Pre-Meteorfall World
Meteorfall
Post-Meteorfall World
The Lifestream
Materia

Nibelheim at the time of the OG
Geography of the Eastern Continent
An Incident in Aerith's Childhood (in the Slums)

Jenova (the Being and the Experiments)
Kadaj
Reunion Experiment

Pre-Meteorfall World
  • slum doctors are not considered trustworthy… even by people in the slums!
  • a ten-year old car runs on fuel… that is stored in drums and *feels* like it has a lot of similarities with oil
  • Nibelehim was chosen to house Shinra’s research facilities because there was a mako reactor there and the area in general was rich in mako
  • potion bottles can be given via gas-filled syringes
SOLDIER
  • kids in general looked up to SOLDIER
    • but not a lot of people tried to become one
  • there were rumors about SOLDIER needing to be submerged in mako to gain their special abilities
  • SOLDIERs were known to fight using materia and magic depending on their training
  • being a 2nd Class SOLDIER was considered not to be a big deal
  • Reno doesn’t know the 2nd Class SOLDIERs
Rufus, the Turks and Shinra
  • Rufus chose the supplies for the army
    • the first knife he held was from here… it’s blade was 20cm long
  • Dr. Drake wanted to be in the Science Department to study Jenova… but was put into the medical department of the army instead
  • soldiers in Shinra’s army liked to have showy scars
  • surgeons in Shinra’s army would usually never operate on members of the general public
  • there was tensions between the Urban Development Department and the Turks
    • really, between most departments and the Turks
  • Dr. Eugene Dimitri used to be an army surgeon in Shinra
    • he’s around 60 years old in TKAA
    • he would scam people by saying they had fake medical issues they needed to pay him to look at in the future
Sector Six Plateside
  • contained company housing for lower level Shin-Ra employees after Midgar was finished
    • company housing would later be moved to Sectors 7 and 5
  • housing was supposed to be demolished, but some rich guy leased it from Shinra for his workers to live in
  • people who live there now came from the slums
    • rent is cheap compared to the rest of plateside Midgar
  • kind of place where people are poor for the plateside, but too rich for the slums live
  • houses are very basic and made out of what looks like brick

Meteorfall
  • lots of rumors flying about… including
    • you’d be safe if you hid in the mako reactors
    • Kalm had an underground shelter built by Shinra
  • the Lifestream caused a lot of damage to Nibelehim
    • Shinra told any people left there to handle the situation on their own
    • most of the “actors” living there died when the Lifestream surged
  • the Lifestream surged up out of Great Glacier leaving behind many deep, interconnected cracks in the ice that lead to the Lifestream

Post-Meteorfall World
  • lots of merchandise is stolen
    • most people try not to think about where merchandise is coming from
  • business is mainly haggling
  • phones are rare post-Metorfall
    • phones still *work*... it’s just that no one is making anymore
    • people with phones don’t get rid of them
    • sometimes warehouses of phones get found and they’re really cheap for a short time… but usually they’re very expensive
  • fruit has been expensive ever since Meteorfall
  • due to the societal upheaval, there was a lot of detective-type industries post-Meteorfall
    • by the time of TKAA, most of that has died down as the world is much calmer
  • main places to get fuel are from Shinra or the WRO… or Corneo…
  • the Gold Saucer is now closed
  • Icicle Inn is burned down by Kadaj
    • Reno is seen heading up the efforts to rebuild it afterwards
  • somehow, people with Geostigma know to go to Aerith’s Church/into her Healing Rain without being told about what it is
Midgar Immediately post-Meteorfall
  • rumors that Midgar would collapse
  • an evacuation advisory had been issued
  • by the fifth day post-Meteorfall, the water mains had stopped working
  • people went down from the Plateside to the Slums by following the railway tracks
  • people in the slums were burning the corpse of people who died from geostigma hear the train station

Rufus, the Turks and Shinra
  • Rufus is called “Doofus Shinra”
    • people think he died when the Shinra Building blew up
  • people are stilled scared of the idea of the Turks
    • they know they are/were Shinra’s dark side and are called for when Shinra needed violence to solve problems
    • Even thinks Reno and Rude are only capitalizing on the Turk name for the effects it has on people
  • people think Shirna is wanting to make a profit off of Geostimga painkillers (they aren’t… they know it’s foolish to try that :P)
  • there’s rumors that Shinra was the one who collapsed the Sector 7 plate
  • a lot of people claim to be working for Shinra… none of them but the Turks have a lot of influence
    • people think Shinra is weak because there’s no president to hold it together anymore
  • the Turks say that how many Turks there is is one of Shinra’s biggest secrets
  • the Turks are investigating people who call themselves Ancients
    • they are leaving the people who are faking it alone
  • the Turks say there are still people from the Science Department around who would like to do experiments on Cetra… the bad kind of experiments
  • Shinra is down to three helicopters
    • the rest were looted in the first six months after Meteorfall
    • one is at Healin, the other two are in Midgar in a warehouse in Sector 8
  • Elena has a lot of scars from her time as a Turk
    • Tseng definitely notices them
  • Dr. Eugene Dimitri *still* has outdated info on what Red XIII is
    • he thinks he is a wild beast still
    • he knows Red XIII used to be something the people in the Science Department were playing with
  • Tseng wonders why so many talented people in Shinra Medical Team have defective personalities
  • the Turks do have wiretaps
WRO (World Regenesis Organization)
  • people know the leader of the WRO used to be someone high up in Shinra
  • some people think the WRO and Shinra are connected and that WRO isn’t that much different from Shinra

Edge
  • people still think it was Kilmister’s idea to build Edge, not Rufus’ idea
  • the Turks are the ones managing the construction of the plaza… along with a bunch of volunteers
  • the street 7th Heaven is on is the oldest street in Edge… and has the niecest paving job
    • some of the houses on that street are so nice, you’d have no idea they were built from scrap material
    • that street feels like it could be back in old Midgar in Sector 7 (probably plateside?)
  • Strife Delivery Service posts flyers on bulletin boards around Edge and even the Midgar slums
    • the flyers have the number for 7th Heaven on them
    • Strife Delivery Service has a long-distance OK clause
    • Denzel and Marlene are the ones who answer the phone :D
Under Junon
  • started a ocean shipping business after Meteorfall
    • it replaced the air shipping business of Shinra which ran on mako
  • Under Junon now is very prosperous
  • there are Costa del Sol-stye beach houses there now
Nibelheim
  • the people now living in Nibelheim were people who settled there after Meteorfall
    • except Gould Arde, an ex-SOLDIER
  • monsters are *still* an issue
Wall Market/Don Corneo
  • Wall Market doesn’t feel like a market anymore… it’s not longer busy
  • Don Corneo still keeps pictures of all the women he’s been with on his wall
    • he uses them as blackmail material
    • and has copies of all of them
  • Don Corneo is *terrified* of Cloud
    • he blames meeting Cloud as the start of his downfall
  • Tifa didn’t know Corneo was still alive
    • she’s not worried about him doing anything to her because she has Cloud

Geostigma Painkillers
  • based on stimulants that Shinra issued to SOLDIER
  • designed to be able to be mass-produced easily
  • method of manufacture and distribution is to be released to WRO and other places for free
  • Elena was the one who came up with the project idea
  • Researchers were from Shinra’s Science and Chemistry Departments
    • they are decent people who really did want to do the research on it
  • painkillers are sensitive to changes in temperature… which dulls the effectiveness
  • using them too often makes them stop working (builds up a tolerance?)
  • a quarter tablet is enough for a kid… otherwise they will overdose
Cloud
  • is described as steely-eyed and emotionless
  • doesn’t like small-talk
  • has the Fenrir by now
Red XIII
  • people think he looks like a bright red dog... wolf… lion… thing
  • and his tail is on fire

The Lifestream
  • people do believe that the memories and knowledge of the dead merge with the Lifestream
  • since Meteorfall, the Turks believe the Lifestream has a will of its own
    • they think the Lifestream is what saved the Planet from Meteor
  • people know from Meteorfall that the Lifestream isn’t always kind
  • Black Lifestream can show up in water that isn’t even connected to the Lifestream
    • it makes the bottom of a lake much deeper than it should be
    • moving through it can feel like something is pushing back against you
  • the Lifestream looks white when Even and Kyrie fall into it
  • it’s not warm or cold, it just feels comfortable
  • there’s voices in the Lifestream
    • but muffled… like plugging your ears in a crowd
    • it’s not unpleasant to listen too (anymore)
  • the Lifestream heals the wound in Even’s shoulder completely
  • the Lifestream is “underneath” the water under the Great Glacier
  • Even and Kyrie feel connected to the Planet while being in it
  • Even notes that the Lifestream isn’t angry currently
  • Even says being part of the Planet (while dissolved in it) is another form of Life
    • really, he says when he fell into the Lifestream, he was dissolved into it… which was when he realized this
  • Jenova’s Arm sinks into the Lifestream with… seemingly no issues on the Lifestream’s end
  • the Lifestream bubbles up around Kadaj like it’s alive and… dissolves him into particles of light
  • the Spring in Aerith’s Church goes down to the Lifestream
    • it looks like it has no bottom
Materia
  • Shops did sell materia pre-Meteorfall
    • most came from Shinra
  • it is semi-translucent
  • it is also slightly elastic…
  • when materia is held (not used!), it feels like power comes forth from it

Nibelheim at the time of the OG
  • there were at least 15 people working for Shinra at Nibelheim
    • one of them was a 2nd Class SOLDIER, Gould Arde
    • Annette (Even’s mother)’s job was to watch the Sephrioth Copies
  • Shinra paid a lot of money to the “actors” to live there
    • half of it was paid up-front to Annette
  • the “actors” couldn’t tell anyone where they were going, including their families
  • they were to live there for one year
  • if they told anyone… they got killed for it
Geography off the Eastern Continent
  • it takes at least two hours by car to get from Midgar to Healin Lodge
  • when the Lifestream erupted out of the ground, it changed the terrain all over the world
    • most of this new terrain hasn’t been mapped yet
    • Tifa has a map that is accurate though
  • pre-Meteorfall, the mountains blocked the direct route from Midgar to Junon… so the only route was to the east of Midgar
    • it took days to travel to Junon from Midgar
  • post-Meteorfall, driving from Midgar to Junon takes two days if they stop for the night
An Incident in Aerith’s Childhood (in the Slums)
  • Aerith and Kyrie knew each other as kids and Kyrie would play in Aerith’s Church
  • one day Aerith told Kyrie to go home out of nowhere
  • when Kyrie went home, she saw her parent’s bodies were being carried to the house
    • Kyrie was 10 when this happened (dates?!?!)
  • Kyrie told her grandmother about the Lifestream and the Cetra and thought Aerith was a Cetra
  • when Kyrie saw Aerith next, she told Aerith “you creep me out” and stopped going to the Church
  • after the Sector 7 collapse, she went to the Church and found out the Turks had taken Aerith

Jenova (the Being and the Experiments)
  • the Science Department knows Jenova can read the human consciousness and control it
  • they also know that she came from space and was called the “calamity from the skies”
  • a number of experiments were conducted with Jenova’s Cells
    • including whatever experiments *produced* the arm
  • one of Jenova’s mummified arms has been cut of above the elbow
    • it’s definitely a woman’s arm
    • it seems dried up in some places, but in others it looks fresh
    • Dr. Drake says the mummy is both a human woman and also Jenova
    • the arm is still *warm* to the touch
    • somehow, Annette Townsend came into possession of the arm during her involvement with the Reunion Project
    • the arm ultimately sinks into the Lifestream
  • Hojo knows how Jenova destroyed the Cetra!!!!!
    • she would take the form of someone important to a person (or a dead person) to get close to them
    • then she would gain their trust and start to influence them
      • like “someone bears a grudge against you, someone wants to kill you
    • that caused people to get suspicious about other people
    • and then they would all fight each other
  • Tseng wonders if Jenova did that to Hojo which was why Hojo went crazy
  • both Jenova Cells and Tissue were put into the human body as part of different experiments
  • Hojo conducted the experiments at his own discretion
    • because of this, most of the details about the experiments have been lost

Kadaj
  • Kadaj has Mimic like Sephrioth did… he can make people see people from their past
    • people who didn’t see the person in life see Kadaj as Kadaj
  • Kadaj can read people’s minds like Jenova can
    • sometimes this requires him to touch someone
    • other times he can do this just by being near people
    • he sees the memories they remember
    • he can feel their emotional states as well
    • sometimes people can feel him “pulling” something out of their mind when he does this
  • Tseng immediately thinks of Sephrioth when he sees Kadaj
  • Kadaj can numb major wounds by touching people
    • we’re talking a gunshot wound that totalled someone’s shoulder
    • and the person in question did not have Jenova Cells in them either
  • he can reverse the numbness when he wants to later
  • even Kadaj thinks something is nasty about Sephrioth
    • he hears Sephiroth’s name in the Lifestream and doesn’t seem to know he’s part of Sephrioth
  • Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz’s names are based on people Kyrie knew from her past
    • Kadaj *does not* look the Kadaj Kyrie knew… so Yazoo and Loz probably don’t either
  • he can form weapons from thin air
  • and also teleport at fast speeds
    • we’re talking teleporting from the ground to balancing on the nose of a moving helicopter
  • he can move *through* people like they’re not there
  • Kadaj is obsessed with finding parts of Jenova’s body
  • he goes nuts when her arm falls into the Lifestream… and goes into the Lifestream after it
  • he “dies” by being… engulfed… by the Lifestream and forcibly dissolved by it

Reunion Experiment
  • Even’s mom, Annette Townsend, was watching over the Sephiroth Copies
    • she was supposed to bring everyone *back* to Nibelheim afterwards
    • including arranging vehicles for the Sephiroth Copies
  • in Icicle Inn, the residents noticed a lot of people coming in who were muttering to themselves and donned black, hooded clothes
  • she gave up and left for home… but then returned two months later
  • not all the Sephrioth Copies made it to the Northern Crater
    • some of them got lost in the ice caves underneath the Great Glacier
  • Annette went looking for the lost copies
  • Shinra has records on who the Sephrioth Copies were before they were turned into Sephiroth Copies
  • the Copies Annette was keeping an eye on were from Nibelheim, but she found the bodies of other Copies who weren’t from Nibelheim too
  • Vincent Valentine, Cid Highwind and Barret Wallace helped Annette get to and from Icicle Inn and Midgar
  • Annette died down in the ice caves near the dead Sephiroth Clones
    • she is curled around something that is still warm
    • it turns out to be the arm of Jenova from the Jenova experiment previously mentioned

One point that was clarified in the Yen Press release.
Kyrie and Aerith weren't exactly childhood friends.
As a child, she would play at the church with her friends, and Aerith, who was always there tending to the flowers, would often talk with them.
Makes a bit more sense since Aerith is 5 years older than Kyrie.

So that woman isn't Jenova but someone infected by it? Is there any conclusion about who that woman was? A infected Cetra?

Nibelheim info.
Nick Foley was the one in charge of the resettlement project.

And yeah.
Junon was a thriving fishing village that was renamed Under Junon when the fortified city was built on top of it.

So that woman isn't Jenova but someone infected by it? Is there any conclusion about who that woman was? A infected Cetra?

My interpretation is that it was just Jenova's arm, and that a woman was the last form Jenova took as a shape shifter.
So it was just the arm of the Jenova we all know as she appears in Hojo's lab.
