Can you describe (at least) one trait/ability of yours that you cherish and (at least) one ability that you wish you had?
I like the fact that I'm not materialistic: for example, obviously I'm thankful that I can afford my own little roof over my head, but I don't care about "upgrading" and "remodelling" it, and I don't envy people who own fancy things I can't afford.

I wish I was better at connecting with people and showing them I really do like them. I fear I come across as awfully stand-offish.

Did you always want to be a teacher? Did you consider any other career paths? How come you came to be quite the traveller, was it by accident or design?

No! And if you'd told me when I was eighteen that I was going to end up as an English teacher I'd have said shoot me now. Before I went into teaching, I worked in publishing, but it was not what I had imagined, and I was bored. So I went got my PGCE and switched careers and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

I think being a traveller is in my genetic makeup. When I was a tiny kid I would escape from the back yard and roam all over the neighbourhood, and whenever my parents took us visiting anywhere I would always wander away and get lost. I love to get myself lost in strange cities and then gradually figure out where I am and how to get where I need to be. I also like to veer off known routes when driving and just "follow my nose" to discover an alternate route home. If I live in the same place for more than a few years I get antsy and restless.

Also, your take on parenthood is much the same as mine (but worded better), I feel I could take some useful info away from your parental anecdotes, so get sharing (please)! :awesome:

I feel it's like tempting fate to imply that I do parenting well. Anyway... both my boys were complaining the other day that they didn't like how so many people their age were so obsessed with getting drunk, and they didn't particularly enjoy parties where all everybody did was get drunk. I said, "Jeez, what did I do to raise such a pair of sobersides?" and my older said, "You were just always so chill about it."

What he means is that he was younger, round 11 or so, he asked if he could have a beer and I said, "Sure, there's one in the fridge. Here you are." I let him have it because he knew he would hate it. He had one sip and quietly abandoned it. I've also let them have wine when they asked (they didn't like that either) and talked to them very frankly about drugs. My rule is not a blanket "don't do it" but "if you're going to do it, be very clear about what it is you're choosing to do. And remember drugs are illegal. Do you really want to be expelled from school and get a criminal record? Your choice, man."

I just think everybody likes to feel in control of their own lives. You have to let your kids make their own choices even if you know they are making the wrong choice, and then be ready to catch them when they fall.

They've been travelling with me ever since they were born. They are great travelling companions, good with maps, very resourceful. They know how to figure out a new city.

Anything specifically children related ever happen that people who don't travel with youngsters just wouldn't understand?

Well... once we were in a very remote game park in Tanzania with the very last of my 2 year old son's sippy cups. He wouldn't drink from anything except his cup and you can't buy them in Tanzania. While we were at the gate lodge paying the entrance fee, a baboon got into our car (we forgot to close the window) and took the cup. This was a crisis of major proportions. My son started howling, the baboon ran to the edge of the road, and the game warden chased him with a rifle. For a while there was a Mexican stand-off: the game warden staring down his rifle sight at the baboon, the baboon clutching the cup to its chest. (I don't for a moment think the warden intended to shoot the baboon; I think it was just a game of bluff). It was funny because the baboon could have buggered off with the cup, but instead it sat there, hunched over its stolen prize, quite obviously stricken by an attack of conscience. Eventually it tossed the cup back at us with a "man, what's the big deal anyway?" shrug and wandered off.

I threw the cup away, and my son learned to drink from a normal glass.

Do you have a list of places you wanted/want to go, or do they sort of choose you?

Good question. I longed to go live in Africa when I was a little kid, but I kind of grew out of that ambition, and then it chose me anyway. Countries I've lived in have always chosen me: we/I went where the work was.

Do you like action films like 300 or tv series like Spartacus? With swords and fiction?

Yes!! I was introduced to science fiction by my father and I didn't realize my tastes were considered abnormal for a girl until I wrote a book review of Poul Anderson's "The Maker of Universes" for a Grade 6 English project. The teacher, a very "girly girl" couldn't believe I read such stuff.

[quoteHave you ever written fantasy stories?
Yes

If I may, what is your nationality? I can't put my foot on it x__x;

Canadian and British

This is for my family man tips one day, but how do you handle a child with tantrums without resorting to angry yells in return?

I would say ignore them, but that never worked with my kid. If I left the room where he was throwing the tantrum he would run ahead of me to wherever I was going, lie down on the floor there and continue to tantrum. After a while I realized that he actually wanted and needed to have a shouting match, so we'd do that, and then when he'd let out all his rage and frustration we would talk about the problem and try to solve it. I think 2-3 year olds tantrum because it's around that age that they first realize how powerless they really are. Feeling powerless is frightening and horrible. You have to let kids feel they have some real say over what goes in in their lives while at the same time making it clears that they are not in charge.

(same with Carlie, because I work in the airlines) what is your worst experience in the airline industry when you flew with one before?

I've never had any really bad experiences, just long long boring flights. I guess my worst experience was flying from London to Sudan with BA and the Egyptian guy in the seat next to me got really drunk and started hitting on me, and then when I told him to back off he actually hit me. I went to the stewardess and she moved me to an empty seat in First Class. Nowadays I think they might have given him a much harder time, but we were in Egyptian air space and I don't think any of us felt it was worth the hassle reporting it to the police, especially since I was only touching down before flying on to another country. The stewards could not have been nicer or kinder. I have never had a bad experience on BA.

Once when we laying over on the ground in Mozambique the guy three rows in front of us refused to turn off his cell phone and was very aggressive to the stewardess, so they got the police who took the man off the plane. That was incredibly satisfying to witness.

*first time I've asked anyone a question*

Did you always want to be a teacher?

No. When I was at unit it was the last thing I wanted to be.
I went for one of those assessments where they tell you what kind of job you're intellectually and psychologically fit for, and I got "computer programmer". I regret now that I didn't follow this advice, but at the time I was in denial about being a big fat nerd. So I went into publishing instead and was bored.

Do you enjoy teaching?

Yes. I love it. But I think I might not love it so much if I hadn't done other things first. There are people at my school who came into that school straight out of teacher training college. I think they feel a little constrained sometimes. It's a shame, because it's so easy to travel the world as a teacher. There are decent jobs everywhere.

How did you become a teacher in Canada?

I have a PGCE from the University of Surrey, Roehampton institute. I also had a certain number of years experience (I think it's 3 or 4). The Ontario College of Teachers recognizes UK qualifications as the equivalent of Canadian qualifications, so UK-trained teachers (and also Australian, New Zealand, and USA teachers) don't have to gain any additional qualifications in order to work here. But jobs are almost impossible to find. We produce way more teachers than we need. The majority of my colleagues spent a year or two in the UK right after training college in order to get experience, because they couldn't even get on the supply lists here. It's a well-paid, secure job and the Ontario Teacher Pension's Plan is quite literally the best in the world.

If you were to change careers, what would you move to ideally?

Director of Square Enix merchandising division

How often do you roll your eyes at the shenanigans on TLS?

Honestly, never.

What part of Canada do you live in?

On the shore of Lake Ontario just south-west of Toronto.

What is Canada like to live in?

Nice. Super-easy. Comfortable. A bit smug. We think we have the moral edge on Americans. In my neck of the woods Canadians like to drink and we're big on conspicuous consumption and conspicuous charity. However we have a huge, huge blind spot and that is the First Nations communities in their midst.

Houses are big - my house would be considered average in the Uk and it's considered tiny here. Public transport is awful. The beer is so-so, but we have some good micro-breweries now. The winter sports scene is amazing if you like that kind of thing (I don't). Canadian Netflix doesn't offer as many shows or movies as USA Netflix and Canadian Target is a really cheap and nasty version of American Target. Public facilities like libraries, swimming pools, parks and rec, public tennis courts etc.. are all fabulous. The traffic is terrible and Canadians are rather bad drivers. I have never seen so many road accidents!

But you have to remember that I live in the narrow strip of conurbation that runs more or less all the way from Montreal to Niagara Falls. I think something like 50% of our entire population lives here. It's not representative of Canada as a whole. The Maritimes, the Prairies and BC are completely different.

Why do you want to move to the UK?
<3

Because all my closest friends are there and I love it and I'm homesick. Canada is a really awesome country, don't get me wrong, but I just never loved it the way I love England.

Of all the countries you have lived in, which one was your favourite?

England and Zimbabwe

Which country to each of your boys like best?

The older one likes England. The younger one likes Zimbabwe.

Which would be the best to retire in?

If you were getting your pension in hard currency, Zimbabwe. The only time I ever felt truly rich was when Zimbabwe was gong through hyper-inflation and I was earning US dollars. On pay day we would change our money on the black market (the Grade 6 social studies teacher had a system in place) and then we'd have to spend it asap because by the next day it would have lost a quarter of its value.

Did you take your dog to live with you in other countries? Which countries are more dog-friendly?

I find Canada to be quite dog-unfriendly. Their leash laws are draconian and their so-called free-run dog parks are like miserable featureless prison yards that no dog would want to run around in. There is a surfeit of vets in my area and they're all trying to pay off their vet school bills by scamming you into paying for treatments your pet doesn't need. I've become very cynical about vets.

The UK is pretty dog friendly, but the most dog-friendly was France, where you can take your dog anywhere, even into restaurants. Some may find this unhygienic but frankly I love it.

Yes my dog has travelled with us everywhere. That was the commitment we made when we brought him into our family: that we would never leave him behind.

Do you eat licorice IRL or did it just sound fancy for a name?

No, I don't like licorice. I don't know why I picked it; I think there was a bag of the stuff sitting on the table when I was casting around for a user name, and it seemed as good as any other.

Does your dog like to cuddle?

He likes to wrestle, kill skunks, and steal chocolate.

Why do you like Tseng so much? (He is my least favorite Turk)

I don't honestly know. Reno was my first favourite. But for a fanfic writer Tseng makes a really good viewpoint character because he knows all the major characters in the story and has been a player in all the key events, but at the same time he's not an agent of change, he is an observer, and he doesn't make things happen so much as react to events that happen.

If you were a Turk what would your weapon of choice be?

I would love to be a real sharp-shooter with a semi-automatic. I'd love to learn how to fire a gun and get good at it.

Out all the Turks who do you think you would get along with the best?

Veld because we can compare notes about what it's like trying to control a bunch of kids.

Whats it like giving birth? I want kids but that is the only thing holding me back. PAINNN!

I am the wrong person to ask. My whole family gives birth pretty quickly and with very little pain. That's why I ended up having my first son in the car on the way to hospital: when I called the hospital to tell them I thought I was in labour, they told me that if I was in labour I would KNOW because it would HURT and since it wasn't hurting the baby probably wasn't anywhere near being born and I should just go back to sleep. So like a good girl I did what they said, and by the time I finally got in the car to head for the hospital he was literally fifteen minutes away from popping out. We had to pull into the car park of a pub on the A30 so my husband could catch him as he came out.

And then when the ambulance people came they were all snarky because they felt it was a call-out that could have been avoided - like it was MY fault I didn't get to the hospital on time.

Both times I gave birth naturally I felt I could have run a marathon afterwards, I had that much adrenaline coursing through my system. It took me a bit longer to get back on my feet after the Cesarian - 12 hours.

I'd much rather have a baby than go to the dentist!

I have not read this thread yet, so apple-orgies if my questions are repeated.

1. Will you be my mentor? I feel I should follow you and learn from your wonderful foundation of calm and practicalicles.

TBH I think you are more equipped to be a mentor than in need of one.
You must find your own fulcrum in this life, grasshopper, and create your own balance.

2. If you agree to be my mentor/life guide does this rule out sex?

Yes.

3. Do you like Firefly/Serenity? Thoughts on the injustice of it all?

I loved it so much!! Why no more? Why cut short? Such characters! Very setting! Much charm. I don't know the story of why there was only one season - or half a season; I thought Joss Whedon was someone who got whatever he wanted. It just seems like there was so much still waiting to be done with that cast and that world.

4. HAve you ever had an unexplained bruise - what did you think might have happened? (I generally accuse aliens, myself)

No, I always know where my bruise came from.

5. Canada is a pretty cool country - why did you leave?

My parents are also tumbleweeds by nature. My father got a job in Afghanistan and then we were based in the Uk, which is where my mum comes from, and I went to school there. But I was really, really glad to go; I felt as if Canada was on the edge of the world and Britain was right at the heart of it. I still kind of feel that.

6. Where would you like your children to live in the future? Same country as you or free roaming the globe?

I am pretty sure my older son will end up in Japan and my younger one will travel the world working for the UN or as a diplomat. Those are their plans, anyway.

7. What song(s) makes you grind the junk in yo' trunk? Apart from Shaggy's Mr Boombastic - everyone gyrates to that one.

Shaka Demus and Plier's version of "Twist and Shout".

Soul Limbo by Booker T and the MGs

8. What question do you fear for a complicated answer in this thread?

Do I have a favourite child?

9. What is it about the Turks you love so much? Individual characters? Or sorta
the idea of badass henchmen with a possible conscience? Or you just like types that can be bossed around?

I like the fact that they're all such individuals but they're really tight with each other and they seem to actually like each other. Plus, as far as the games go they're much less developed, as characters, than Avalanche, which gave my imagination more scope. I've always been fascinated by how and why people end up on the side of evil, but I also felt that "evil" in FFVII was not a black and white concept. Avalanche isn't all good and Shinra isn't all evil, and I was interested in looking at situations in which the end might justify the means, and where the limits to that position would be.

It really bothers me in Before Crisis that they're all so willing to risk the entire world on the very slim chance that they might be able to save the life of Veld's daughter. That's such an un-Turk-like thing to do.

10. Has your experience of being with your kids' father tainted you against future love? Made you wary? Empowered you? Something else?

Well, my trust sinew is busted beyond mending. I don't think you can love someone if you can't trust them, and I don't trust anyone, so.... On the other hand it's also been empowering because I've found that I'm really happy living alone, on my own terms, doing my own thing - so much happier than I was for almost all of my time with him that I reckon I'm really just not cut out for cohabiting. I often wonder if I would feel differently if I didn't have the kids, though.

11. How awesome is fruit?

Fruit goes with everything. It especially goes with chocolate. Is there a fruit that doesn't go with chocolate? (Grapefuit, maybe?). Also, bananas are proof that god exists and she has a sense of humour. I just found out recently that bananas tasted different, and better, in the 1940s because the standard market variety was a breed of banana, called Gros Michel, which got killed off by a virus in the 1950s, just like the Great French Wine Blight of the 19th century. The bananas we eat nowadays are the breed growers fell back on when the best bananas shrivelled and died. Also, all banana trees are clones of each other. Also, they're not really trees!

Do you wonder where Carlie is due to a lack of questions regarding orgies and threesomes?

If you could create an essay question for your students (if you don't do so already), what would it be?

I think Carlie can tell I'm not that kind of girl.

I would ask them, "Why do you always feel so anxious?" The answers would be instructive for all of us, I think.
