Member Spotlight #29: Ask Lex anything

In this forum tradition we give a specific member a thread for a week in which they can share whatever information they want about themselves, then answer whatever questions the public asks them. It's sort of an expansion on the "Let's get to know each other" thread by, well, giving one member the spotlight. More information on the concept can be found here.

This week's participant is [member=668]Lex[/member], who has elected to share the following information:
Laifu Story

Hello, I'm Lex. Full name Alexander, people call me Alex, Alexis, Lexi, Lexicon, and Lex IRL. Everyone has their own name for me tbh. Actually my friend Holly calls me Alexio in texts and on birthday cards too.

I'm from Glasgow, which is the biggest city in Scotland. While it's a moderate size, lots of people, not a lot of wide open spaces, it's surrounded by lochs and countryside so the people here also have a bit of a small-town mentality, it's an odd mix. Glasgow is known for its high crime rate, I was born in one of the roughest areas and grew up in an OK one.

I had three very good friends and a lot of on/off friends in primary school as well as kids who lived around the corner/ on the same street. Two of them actually also turned out to be gay much later in life after we lost contact (one male, one female), the one I kept in touch with a bit is a Lawyer living in London. The people around my street I was friendly with are either dead or in prison or living off the state with an average of 5 children. Tell a lie - one is a nurse.

I was a bit of a loner at the start of Secondary school. I applied and got into numerous private schools which I couldn't go to because my parents couldn't afford it and they earned too much money for me to be granted a scholarship. Two of the previously mentioned good friends went to the private school - one was from a single parent family and the other had a mother who worked there. Going to Secondary school with people I didn't really get along with wasn't much of a hoot :P I came out of my shell when I was around 12/13, listened to a lot of different kinds of music and found my niche among the misfit metal loving crowd. I came out (more like was forced out) when I was 13 and someone I knew shared a note I had written to a friend. The teacher caught them passing it and read it out to the class. Before he knew what it was, it was too late. People tried to bully me for years and I developed a bit of an iron skin, but then most of the kids started to respect my wit because I started shouting back after a few months. I found myself oddly popular. I was part of a misfit crowd but I was also in all the school shows, the choir, got really good grades in subjects that were perceived to be difficult. By the time I was 15 I was friendly with just about everyone in my year, and everyone in the school knew who I was. I've since learned that two people I knew quite well in my classes were gay, but were in the closet at school. I resent them slightly because of the shit I went through and they never had my back. I understand they were scared but that resentment doesn't just evaporate because I happen to understand. I still hope karma gets them.

I left school at 16 due to a shitty teacher and worked for a year-ish at an office. I moved to Big American Coffee Company(tm) while I went to college, did an access course after some trial and error with other stuff and went to University a few years later. Started working for Well-Known Telecommunications Company(tm) while at Uni. Left during 3rd year, finished uni a couple of years later and here we are.

Relationships

Covered elsewhere I guess. Rocky, odd, tragic and bad situations. Haven't had one for a few years, haven't been as miserable :P. Doesn't mean I don't covet cuddles and spooning from time to time.

I'm attracted to masculinity - or I guess what society calls masculinity. I like men taller than me with broad shoulders who look like they could break you in half by touching you. Personality wise I like guys who are mainly laid back but can hold their own in an argument, and will tell me to shut up when I'm being an idiot. I don't care all that much about intelligence (re: academia) or what they do for a living, just how observant they are in a relationship. And number one thing: loyalty. I don't think I'm much of a poly person in terms of relationships, but I've never tried it.

Media

Music: I love everything from Pantera to Beyoncé, and I love the looks on some of my old friend's faces who are into like Slipknot and Korn etc (who I also love) when I start belting out a pop tune. With music I feel unlimited, I'm into everything. My mission is to stick my middle finger up at every person who judges a certain kind of music, which goes from the trendy friends who say some metal is just noise and screaming, to the metal crowd who condescendingly say that it's all computer noises. There's more to it and they know they like some of the stuff they pretend they hate. If I hear it and I like it, I listen to it. Fuck the haters. The only genres I don't like too much are Jazz and Rap, but like everything there are exceptions. I don't like the sound of a saxophone which is why Jazz bothers me, and Eminem's popularity makes me want to shove knives in my ears so rap bothers me (I know there's better rap, but sometimes things colour your experiences with it). I always liked ICP and Cypress Hill and Missy Elliott. Not so crazy about the super popular rap.

Movies: Enjoy, but they're my least favourite form of media. I get less excitement from a movie than I do anything else. I typically like horrors and psychological thrillers. Not so much into comedies, but that's only because I can't stand Will Ferrell, that guy with the black hair from Zoolander and Adam Sandler in anything post Billy Madison, so that's 95% of all comedies out the window.

TV Shows: Covered these in another thread.

Video Games: I like them all except sports games, I'm not into them. Favourites are pretty obvious :P

Ask me anything, I'm an open book :monster:
Feel free to ask whatever you'd like. This thread will be up for approximately a week before we move onto our next participant. :monster:

What is your favorite song by Korn?

OMG why have you done this to me! :D

I loved Korn so much when I was around 14-16 but I still listen to them this day. From the earlier stuff I like Blind, Freak on a Leash, Got the Life, A.D.I.D.A.S and Here to Stay. Also Thoughtless but that falls somewhere in between. I had a bit of a love affair with Take a Look in the Mirror when it came out.

I genuinely like that whole album, but I have a special place in my heart for Let's Do This Now (because bagpipe intro hello) and "Y'all Want a Single". I saw them at Download the one time it came to Glasgow and it was one of my favourite gigs ever.

If I had to pick one it'd probably be Here to Stay, but there's also Y'all Want a Single - me and my friends used to go to an under's alternative nightclub called the Cathouse here in Glasgow and we'd often hear that on our way up to the dancefloor dressed in our broken fishnet/ leather gear and fire up the stairs to dance. A lot of memories of music due to that place, which is awesome.

What's the best class to play in FFXIV? (I've considered giving the game another go).

I'm not sure yet. I still prefer Dragoon over everything else, but I've had a lot of fun as a Warrior (Tank) and White Mage (Healer obviously). I've played every class aside from Rogue and Ninja, and Black Mage (Thaumaturge) is also really interesting. Dragoon is still my favourite though.

Your favourite drink?

Alcoholic: Varies. I used to like Southern Comfort and now I like Bulleit Bourbon. I used to have a thing with Malibu and flirted with Havanna Club 18 which was of the very tasty variety, but that stuff is expensive. My favourite proper whiskey (Scottish) is Auchentoshen. Man it's so tasty to sip, you should all try it.

Non-alcoholic: I actually really really like water. I don't drink nearly as much of it as I should because while Scottish tap water is known to be among the freshest in the world, the taste of it varies from house to house and I don't trust mine. It tastes metallic, too many minerals. And because we can drink our tap water all day every day with no adverse effects I don't like paying for bottled water XD. Studying water is interesting though, I found out that the reason North American teeth tend to be whiter than elsewhere is because the tap water is pumped with a lot of fluorine to kill toxins (fluorine whitens teeth). My favourite unhealthy drink is Irn Bru. The real stuff is illegal in North America due to some sort of FDA rule about sugar per ml.

Favourite day of the year?

Crap I have absolutely no idea. It's not Christmas because being around my family gives me anxiety, it's not my Birthday because those can be hit or miss and it's not any sort of public holiday that I can remember right now. Turns out I don't have a favourite specific day. My favourite day would consist of sex, breakfast, out for lunch, walk somewhere with coffee, back to home for some gaming, dinner, gaming, boxset binge, sex, shower, sleep. So any day where that happens in that order of events (only the sex needs to contain another person, not the rest of it) would be my favourite.

You liked Korn as an angsty teenager too? How is this relevant to your favourite nut and/or legume?

What other guilty pleasures (of the past and present) do you have that we are likely not aware of?

What are your ideal features of a woman, if you had no choice but to have sex with one? Mwahaha.

You liked Korn as an angsty teenager too? How is this relevant to your favourite nut and/or legume?

I did! And it's decidedly not. I don't eat either of those food groups unless they're stealthily contained in other foods I eat (which they often are).

What other guilty pleasures (of the past and present) do you have that we are likely not aware of?

Well I've recently revealed to you all my love of cheesy American TV shows such as Grey's Anatomy. I could go deeper and confess that I've read 11 of the 13 Sookie Stackhouse novels (that's what True Blood is based on for the uninitiated). I've also read every one of Sharon Osbournes autobiographies. Perhaps most shamefully, I've read Katie Price's. While they were awfully written, they were interesting and I quite like her. Teri Hatcher's is another I've read, and I wish I could get that time back.

What are your ideal features of a woman, if you had no choice but to have sex with one? Mwahaha.

This question doesn't bother me at all, because I'm secure enough in my homosexuality to be able to answer it Ghost. The same cannot be said for the time I asked this question to you. WALKED INTO THAT ONE DIDN'T YOU.

I don't think I'd have a hair colour preference. I did have a girlfriend when I was younger and she had red hair. Not ginger, but like a very dark red. I feel like I would like to date girls with long jet black hair that curls at the bottom but has some volume. Poker straight annoys me because it's far too manufactured looking (I see the hypocrisy in what I'm saying here :D). Perhaps she has a side fringe. She'd be one to two inches shorter than me with a pair of heels on. Let's go for C-D cup breasts as a nice medium size, most of my friends have humongous knockers and they're nothing but a burden. I favour any eye colour that isn't brown, and I think with the look I've created so far very light blue or green eyes would look quite amazing. She'd probably have wide hips.

This assumes an idealised (in my head) version of a straight man that I'm attracted to's partner. I am essentially imagining the woman that the straight version of what I'm attracted to is attracted to.

What's your favourite sports video game?

I had some version of a manager game on the N64, and I enjoyed that. There was no futile running around on a pitch, but the statistics and the teams and the transfers and the costs I found interesting. Something Manager 64.

I also find SSX enjoyable. And if Tony Hawk's Pro Skater counts, I played all of those and loved them up until the PS2 era. 3 was by far my favourite.

What particular academic field would you like to learn more about?

Astrophysics and all of its derivatives.

You can't stand Will Ferrell? I thought I knew you Lex, I'm not sure our friendship is gonna survive this bombshell revelation. Ben Stiller I'm assuming is the guy you're referring to from Zoolander.

My hatred for Will Ferrell is an irrational one. I hate his stupid hair and his stupid face. And most of all I hate that he's the same character in every single movie. And the fact that he's not even remotely funny, ever. Especially when he's interviewed. He's an absolute dick. I think about bad things happening to him and it makes me happy. Ben Stiller I care less about, but he also annoys me.

Favourite non-FF game?

It has to be Mass Effect now. I love a lot of franchises but Mass Effect took over my life. I love it.

Favourite non-FF world to live in?

Mass Effect. Or if we go non-video game, probably something containing magic or vampirism like Practical Magic or The Vampire Diaries. This probably reveals some sort of deep rooted psychological vanity that has immediately made me less appealing to a lot of you, but Mass Effect wins in every case except FFVII so :D. I understand that these aren't particularly nice worlds to live in, but I imagine myself going in with the knowledge that I currently have. If you take that away I think I'd pick Mass Effect.

Early to bed, or late sleeper?

Late sleeper, every time. I think it's a bit of an illness tbh. I went to bed at 11pm last night and lay awake until 7am. 8 hours lying in bed because I tried to go to bed early. If I'd gone at 3am I would have slept right away.

You're convicted of a crime you didn't commit and sentenced to death, what are your last words, last person you ask to see, and last meal?

"I am innocent", my lawyer because I'm innocent, and maybe a pizza or something.

If it's something I did actually do, "I have no regrets and I had my reasons, suck it bitches", my lover and accomplice, and maybe a pizza or something.

Top 5 anime?

I've only watched about 5 so this should be easy.

Pokémon
Digimon
Fullmetal Alchemist
Dragonball Z
That Vampire One With The Guns That Yop Made Me Watch

Well that makes 5 exactly, bugger me. Of those 5, Digimon was the fave and Pokémon falls to the bottom. I can only handle episodes that contain both Brock and Misty or either of them on their own. Any Pokémon beyond whatever number Togepi is annoys me.

Top 5 books? (Or series)

I'm sorry, I have awfully teenage/ predictable answers to this question.

Sookie Stackhouse Novels
Hunger Games Novels
Harry Potter
Alex Cross Novels
Tolkein

Pick any one character from FF7 (and/or the compilation) for a room-mate, tell us why them?

I work best with someone who is more spontaneous and either inspires or makes me actually do things, so I'm going to throw Zack out there. He's the kind of dude that would jump up and go, let's go out and have a night on the town. I need someone like that. My flatmates in the past are typically like that (Aerith would also fit very well here). If I'm going for someone who's more of a pub-goer/cinema type socialiser but who'll leave me to my own devices when needed, I'd go with Tifa over any other.

Tough choices section - pick only one (these might not be tough for everyone, :P):
FF7OG and ACC, or CC and Last Order?

You could pit the OG against every other title and it would win every time, no contest. I don't hate the Compilation as much as a lot of other people, but I could quite happily erase it all from existence and not feel much of a loss. If I did that to FFVII my life would literally be completely different. I feel like it influenced me so much at that age. When I say "it blew my mind" I actually mean "It blew my mind wide open" in the sense that it introduced me to concepts and things I wouldn't have learned anywhere else at the time. I guess you can never know if that's true, but I do feel like it had a very profound impact on my life.

Star Wars Odds, or Evens?

Cue the lynch mob, but Odds.

First experience of videogames?

Got a Sega Mega Drive with Sonic the Hedgehog for my 4th Christmas. Fell in love with it. Still love Sonic to this day, even though it's ranged from mildly enjoyable to absolutely terrible since the golden years.

What is your proudest achievement? Biggest failure?

Finishing Uni under extreme pressure.
Biggest failure is probably not trying harder to repair my relationship with my family, but we're too different and any attempts I've made have gone down the drain. It's hard sometimes but I'm over it.

Is there such a thing as 'gaydar' or is it a big load of bollocks?

I honestly don't know. I think if you have gay friends you're just more likely to notice other homosexual men based on stereotypical qualities, but there have been times that I've known that someone was gay or at least same-sex leaning when they don't exhibit any of these qualities and others have sworn up and down that they're "totally straight". Maybe there's something chemical about it idk. There have been studies done where only the faces of people were shown and random participants were asked to identify whether the person was gay or straight, and on average there was something like a 90% success rate. So there could be something in the biology of it.

You have the chance to earn a billion dollars, but you have to kill a kitten and/or puppy first (which ever you are more sympathetic to). What do you do?

What is your favourite language?

What question(s) would you ask any world leader(s) in a globally televised address?

You realise a gun-toting spree killer is in the building you're occupying. There is a gun available to you. Do you grab the gun and confront the killer, or do you run away?

You are one of ten hostages to a gunman who claims to have a bomb in a duffel bag. You are also aware there's always a chance a fellow hostage is a sleeper unit in allegiance with the hostage-taker. Escape is not an immediate option (doors are locked, and would take hours to unlock unnoticed). A person has already been killed, so you know the hostage-taker ain't kidding around. There's no communication to the outside world, and so it is assumed the police haven't acted as they are unaware of any deaths so far. All the world knows is the hostage-taker will kill a random person every hour if their demands aren't met. When the gun isn't pointed at you, and with no idea of the strength or skill of the hostage-taker, do you attempt to wrestle them, or do you continue to obey their orders?

Purely because I love her story, and I love listening to her speak. Plus she's awesome :D

Because flying across the room and slamming into enemies is pretty amazing. Also the mechanics surrounding the best time to do it in both games is super interesting.

There are a lot of different species there and I like the look of the city. If they question wasn't a planet I would have chosen the citadel.

Sticking to your OGuns, I see :D

That should show you all how much I love FFVII :D

It was on campus at uni. I my friend was sitting reading a paper, the dude sat down about a metre away (on a long cement bench), gradually moved closer, and reached out and squeezed. I my friend got up and just walked away. Not my type :P.

Actually I'd still have gotten up and walked away if it was my type e.g. a female, 'cause I just don't like that sort of stuff, hehe. But that makes me think - what if it were a female?

Well it's really super creepy no matter which way you slice it, but it's commonplace in a gay bar tbh. One of my LTR's started this way, I was up ordering a drink at the bar, that happened, I did the "what the hell" eyebrows and then there was laughter and discussion. But it is a violation of personal space and if it had happened to me on a park bench things would probably have gone differently.

If you were a superhero, what would your codename be and what would your powers/abilities be?

The power to fly and to be in space without suffering any ill effects. Also would probably want immortality so I could actually get to different solar systems/ galaxies and actually see them XD.

If I had to stay on earth, I'd extend my life by ten times the normal amount so I could do all the things I actually want to do - do a shitload of degrees, visit every country etc.

You say you don't like movies as much as TV shows, but what movies do you really love?

Practical Magic is one of my favourite movies, I find it comforting. I also like the last two Harry Potter films, Avatar (the one with blue people) and Serenity. More recently I've loved Interstellar and Dallas Buyers Club is pretty amazing. Jared Leto is brilliant.

Do you have a gaming/movie/TV backlog that you need to go through?

I do often think "I should be doing this instead" or "I should be playing this instead" but at the end of the day you're enjoying media so I don't really care all that much.

Let's be serious here, how many times have you realistically played through the ME trilogy?

From beginning to end, six or seven times. From the start of two to the end, two or three times. I tried different classes starting from two after the release of ME3 but before the release of ME1 on the PS3.

Marvel or DC?

I don't know the difference tbh, I'm not a comic person. I found some of the movies semi-enjoyable but I often get bored during them. Not quite enough man candy for those skin tight costumes imo. Hemsworth and Hugh Jackson being the exception.

Sweet or salted popcorn?

Not a popcorn fan, but if I had to choose I'd go with sweet.

Beer or wine?

Depends on the beer or the wine. If I go into a random bar and the order is "beer or wine" I'd go with beer. If it's peroni (which I love) vs. a medium sweet white zinfandel, I want the wine. Martini Asti technically isn't either, but it's a cross between a wine and a champagne without the bitter taste/ aftertaste. Everyone should try it.

Chocolate or crisps?

Chocolate all the way. I'm not a fan of crisps.

Since I know you're a huge fan of the Buffyverse (:D), would you date a vampire, werewolf, demon or witch?

Demon or Witch because I feel like they're more powerful (what does that say about me XD).

Related to the previous question, who from that universe would you date?

Angel, Spike, Doyle, maybe Riley. This is based on attractiveness and not whether they're a demon or whatever (obviously). There are no attractive male witches in the Buffyverse. Which sucks.

Got any books you'd recommend?

If anyone wants an easy read and doesn't mind a bit of cheese, the Sookie Stackhouse novels are enjoyable.

You have the chance to earn a billion dollars, but you have to kill a kitten and/or puppy first (which ever you are more sympathetic to). What do you do?

I wouldn't be able to do it. I'm not copping out here, but I'd rather be poor :P. If I had a gun to my head, I'd let them shoot me. I can't stand any kind of animal cruelty.

What is your favourite language?

Oh I have loads, but I love the way Hebrew sounds. I find it pleasing to the ear when it's spoken. I've watched a few Israeli LGBT films and that was a super interesting experience. Would recommend Out in the Dark.

What question(s) would you ask any world leader(s) in a globally televised address?

I would go to town on David Cameron but I'm not sure what exactly I would say to him. There would be lots of "how do you justify this" etc. The end goal would be to make him stammer. That stuff is all controlled though :<

You realise a gun-toting spree killer is in the building you're occupying. There is a gun available to you. Do you grab the gun and confront the killer, or do you run away?

I like to think I'd grab the gun then run away tbh, if there are other people around then I'd try to make sure they got away. If I was alone I'd just run.

I often eyeroll at situations like this where someone has tried to play the hero (they're always American, they always die), but it depends on the situation. I would wait until I saw some sort of opportunity to get out, and I guess if you can't trust anyone your only option is to wait for the authorities to do their job. If people are frequently being killed, then it might turn time to do the kamikaze thing and try to take him out.

You see a burning tanker truck is on its side with visible fumes coming out of the tank section. Within the radius of the fumes there appears to be the truck driver's body. What do you do?

You have the chance to graffiti something and not get caught. What do you graffiti, if you choose to do so? :P.

Assess the situation lmao. Ask myself why Ghost is making all this bad shit happen to me. Then maybe try and save them.

I just happened to think of these questions when it was your turn. That's all :awesome:. Here are some nicer ones :P.

You have a feature wall in your ideal house, which you happen to own. What do you put on it?

Would your ideal house even have a feature wall?

Would your ideal house have a garden?

What kind of architectural style would your ideal house have? Is there style from a particular period in time and/or region of the world that takes your fancy? If of your own design out of your head, do describe.

If you were to give your ideal house a name, what would it be?

You're given enough money to buy your ideal clothes. What clothes do you buy?
