Mighty Grunt

Mighty Grunt: man or machine?

The Mighty Grunt doesn't look human either before or after it loses its armour. SE made their Shinra infantrymen - and SOLDIERS - look like human beings, so you'd think that if Mighty Grunt was supposed to be human, it would look like one.

Mighty Grunt without its armour looks a bit like one of the makonoids:

Is there any canon information about whether Mighty Grunt is a man or a machine? Or are we free to imagine it as some ghastly synthesis of man and machine, the joint brainchild of Scarlet and Dr Frankenhojo?

Armor =/= Exo-skeleton suit.

Just because He lost the armor doesnt mean he cant still be under some sort of mechanical suit :monster:

Humans also cant really ball up and roll around everywhere very well..

But Samus Aran still pulls it off :monster:

I think it's open to interpretation. IIRC in the 1st bombing mission Cloud says he just wants to get out of there before roboguards come. Now that could mean that there are robotic guards or it could just be a colloquial term for guys in exosuits. Plus a good number of shinra enemies are robotic such as Air Buster. I agree it's confusing when the field models look like toytown guards.

I'm guessing youre asking for fanfic purposes? I dont think anyone will be rending their garments if you use a little artistic licence :monster:

From the Japanese name, I would say person. (強化戦闘員 [kyouka sentouin], it seems strange to me to refer to a machine as 'in'.)

So definitely not merely a machine then - but the creature inside it may not be a fully sentient, untampered-with human being.

You surmise right, Octo. I think I'll make a post about it in the Turks' thread.

I always figured the Mighty Grunt was a bio-mechanized human - you know Hojo with his 'science'!

I always wanted to know what kind of horrible machinations of science these things were:

Humans in suits. You fight a model that's an ordinary 'red' officer inside the rocket when you're trying to stop the launch, he/she is an ordinary human that talks to you, but the in battle model is one of those.

Licorice: In BC, a soldier asks Scarlet to wait before firing her cannon thing so that mighty grunts can move out of the way. I doubt he/she would care if they were just machines.

Yes, I know. In fact, I've watched the last few episodes of BC quite a few times now, and only yesterday did it occur to me to wonder what exactly those red things were. I'd always kind of assumed they were soldiers - or SOLDIERs. I didn't know what they were called. Because I wanted to find out what their attacks consisted of and what status effects could be used against them, I looked up their picture on the wiki, and to my surprise discovered they're Mighty Grunts. The name "mighty grunt" does make them sound like souped-up humans or humans in super-armour - but you have to admit that the thing that comes out of their armour in the OG looks even less human than the makonoids do. There's evidence on both sides, which is why I wondered if there was some canon ruling on what they are.

...then why are they standing like that?

I'm amazed she cares even if they're humans.

It happens. If the mighty grunts were just machines, why does one need a keycard in the Shinra building? On the other hand, maybe some of them are machines and some are in suits, no real reason they have to be one or the other.

The Shinra security forces are pretty confusing. It gets even worse when you look at the enemies you fight outside of Midgar. That weird bipedal tank thing with the machine guns shows up outside Midgar as well as in the first reactor (that miniboss fight). Plus the weird blue dudes pictured a little way up, and of course the Mighty Grunts. I'm not sure whether they're more man or more machine or more monster or just a combination, but Shinra is pretty fucked up regardless.

Call it fantasy elements and handwave it away, imo.
