Every game has them. The definitive trump card ability that the final boss hurls at you in the epic final confrontations of Final Fantasy. Well okay...maybe not ALL of them, as I don't remember Chaos having one unique skill as all of his moves were based on the Four Fiends but nonetheless...

Which one was truly the most memorable and awesome unique attacks a final boss has hurled at the heroes in Final Fantasy?

My own choice are Supernova from FFVII and Great Attractor from FFVIII. Sephiroth's ability that shows him systematically destroying each planet in the solar system after a subsequent mathematic calculation blew my mind when I first played it.

Then in FFVIII, when Ultimecia somehow pulls each planet in the solar system towards the battle field causing some bizarre gravitational flux also did the same thing :monster:

So yeah, post your thoughts and vote plz.

... I don't even remember this.... I do remember casting zombie on Yu Yevon and he ended up doing 9999 damage to himself trying to heal himself :monster:

Guess I have to pick Seph since it's the only other one up there I know.

I picked Seph because there's nothing more memorable than that 15 minute wait after the cutscene, only to realize you're still alive, and his Fallen Angel attack did worse damage cause it sent you into panic mode. :monster:

I hated supernova, all that fanfare for so little.

Meh.

True. But I'm biased because I didn't encounter any of those other bosses except for Jecht and I thought it was meh.

I chose Big Bang. That was hell. :rage:

I would've chosen Seph's, but then I realized the beauty of having the time to make a sandwich while watching the planet explode. =)

It terms of sheer scale, Sephiroth's Super Nova is best. But for all his theatrics the attack is kinda lame. It's Gravity based, so for all his cinematics of destroying the Solar System, it can't actually kill you, wtf?

Giving an honorable mention to Supernova for the similar OH SHI- cringe factor when I first saw Seph open up with that bad boy. At the time there was simply nothing like it. Now I still lol at how over-the-top it is, combined with the fact that I could make myself a sandwich, take a shower, walk the dog etc before the animation ended. :hohum:

I'd also mention Grand Cross because status-changing effects are a fun twist, imo. I remember Necron's version fucking me up pretty badly, too, even though equipping anti-status abilities made it fairly managable.

Kefka's at the bottom because I rememeber Forsaken/Goner being a total joke despite all the build-up. Shoulda just spammed Fallen One--and Ultima for that matter. Forgot about that.

In the end, the winner is Big Bang for me as well. Fucking ouch.

Zeromus is the only final boss where I always had to have two people healing each round the entire battle. I probably could've just levelled up more but I never really enjoyed FFIV's battle system enough to bother doing that. Definitely the hardest entry of the series I completed.

Of course, the SNES release we got as FF"II" was pretty much a joke.

Big Bang is so broken. Zeromus is like Kuja, in that he just repeatedly spams with no real rhyme or reason. It's just "BIG BANG!!!!! BLACK HOLE!!! BIO!!! BIG BANG!!! BIG BANG!! BIG BANG!!!" ad infinitum.

Kuja spams Flare Star like its going out of style and it really is pretty vicious.

While Sephiroth's Supernova is gravity based, the fact that it not only puts you in critical, but stamps several negative status effects on you, make it very vicious. People sometimes forget that it has that added punch too. I guess most people have ribbons equipped at the time, so they don't notice :monster:

Nothing sucks like having an entire team in critical while they're toads, petrified, and silenced.

And for all of Necron's randomness and lack of real explanation to his presence, he does have a cool theme and attack. XD

Zeromus doesn't really have any rhyme or reason to his attacks, but that's exactly what makes Big Bang so dangerous. If he does Big Bang twice in a row and you haven't healed, you're pretty much irrevocably fucked, because you won't have enough characters left standing to bring everyone else back to consciousness and win the battle.

Some final adversaries attack with more purpose, but Grand Cross (both versions) is really the only one that comes close to matching the devastation of Big Bang. Even then, it isn't used nearly as frequently as Big Bang so it's still not as much of an annoyance.

I noticed that the one time I forgot to put my Ribbons on. Still doesn't matter.

"OHNOTEHSUPERNOVA!"

Ribbons, your status effects fail. Oh no, I'm in critical health, I guess I'll chuck one of my four or five Megalixirs I've been saving up all game. Oh, and look, my Limit meters are fully charges. Cloud, Tifa, Red XIII - pwn his ass. GG Sephy, bye.

Heartless Angel and Super Nova are nice, but they ultimately can't kill you, and when an attack doesn't kill you, that's a problem. Sure Sephiroth *did* have other moves that could kill you - one at a time. Shadow Flare, the wing smack, Deen, all tough stuff that can only hit one guy at a time.

With stuff like Big Bang, Grand Cross, Forsaken, Great Attractor, Flare Star and...like, half of Vayne's shit, I'd like to be able to see a final boss wipe my entire team out in one attack. I don't *want* it to happen, but that possibility should be mandatory IMO. Bosses should be able to potentially kill off the entire party in one bloe. Sephy can't do that. He can weaken them like shit...but he can't kill them all at once. He can kill them one at a time....but not all at once.

Necron's Grand Cross.

All those random status effects that it causes still make sweat drops roll down my forehead whenever the animation starts.
Instant death, characters burning or in rage or being confused...fuck, how I hate all of those. >_>

Supernova looked really awesome, and it's a great way for kids to learn the planets in the Solar System too. :wackymonster:

...Although I remember laughing at Sephiroth when exploding the Sun didn't kill me.

Supernova lasted too long to be awesome.
I enjoyed Ultimecia's attack much more, Great Attractor went pow pow and crushed my dreams. =3

I can't remember Ultimecia's party piece. I'll have to Youtube that.

I voted for Necron's Grand Cross. That seriously messed me up, at the time. Supernova, on the other hand, although spectacular at first is just too damn time-consuming. Plus KOTR laughs in the face of Sephiroth's cheap tricks.

This. Plus the fact that you can kill Sephiroth before he has a chance to cast it. I prefer ultimate attacks to be a mandatory event that you have to brace yourself for.

I like it when final boss battles are a bit...frantic. And not just with one or two close calls, but repeated close calls. The kind where yours hands continue to shake for a few minutes after beating it. That's the standard I'm holding these ultimate attacks to, and not so much aesthetics (although some points go towards imagination).
