Godzilla (1956)

- The WEAPONS

Species (1995)

- alien transmissions in Species appeared helpful at first like how Jenova made itself to appear helpful
- alien in female form (Jenova)
- in the movie alien DNA was spliced with human DNA to create a hybrid, just like how Hojo injected Jenova cells into Lucrecia's embryo
- alien can morph between human female and original form (Jenova)
- original form is frightening (Jenova)
- Jenova's biomechanical feel is borrowed from H.R. Giger's design

Notice the similiarities in the hair and the overall feel

You can see similarities between anything when your looking for them, it doesnt mean the ideas were borrowed :monster:

I know the knee jerk reaction to this topic might be "HEY JUST BECAUSE THEY'RE SIMILAR DOESN'T MEAN SAKAGUCHI MY KAAAAAAWAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIII", but hey, art borrows from other art. It's not an insult to notice the VERY LIKELY possibility that something was borrowed from something else. It happens, and very often Japanese developers will be up front about it.

That's like pretending that

wasn't inspired by

when entire characters from the Chrono series were named after rock stars. Come on, playa. Something can be borrowed/inspired and still be awesome.

I read somewhere that FFVII deliberately borrowed from Fritz Lang's 'Metropolis' in its design of Midgar, and that there are many visual similarities. It's so long since I've seen that film that I can't remember much about it, but I do recall an underclass being kept "down below".

Here's a piece of the original concept art for "Metropolis". Midgar looks fairly similar, but then again, so do many big modern cities.

This one is a little bit more of a long shot, but what about Taxi Driver (1976). The whole Wall Market thing, going in and saving Tifa and Aeris from a pimp could have been inspired by the movie.

I would say The Thing as well a Parasite Eve, though the latter is not a movie.

No one mentioning Akira or Blade Runner?
Definately an Akira reference with the playground in Wall Market and Akira´s hideout which resembles even if only a little bit Jenova´s place.
And Blade Runner on the opening scene and I even think the whole city of Midgar.
