A thread for all of Carol's adventures.

Marvel has been kind of all over the place with Carol through the years. She started off as Ms. Marvel, went by Binary for a while, also used the name Warbird for a spell, then back to Ms. Marvel, and now she's Captain Marvel. On top of that, there have been two other characters to use the Ms. Marvel name while Carol was going by something else (Sharon Ventura being the other one besides Kamala)

Oh and then there there's the fact that Carol is actually like the seventh person to use the title of Captain Marvel.

idk I honestly seriously think Marvel may have been on crack. :faint:

That being said, Carol taking on the Captain Marvel moniker in honor of the late Mar-Vell (the original Captain Marvel) was rather fitting, considering he was involved in the incident that gave her her powers in the first place. I know that Marvel really only did this to maintain the copyright, but I'm very glad they did. It was one of the best decisions they've made in a long while with regards to their comics.

In-universe, it was Steve Rogers who urged her to take on the moniker.

And the magnificent Kelly Sue DeConnik has been working magic ever since.

There's a new issue out but I haven't had a chance to read it yet. But I know that Carol just wrapped up shenanigans with the Guardians of the Galaxy in which Rocket revealed that Carol's cat Chewie
was actually an alien.

An alien that laid hundreds of eggs (that all hatched and grew into full-sized cats) because her womb has its own pocket universe. O_o lol

And so there you have it. :awesomonster:

Been reading the the most recent 9 issues, but that's literally all my exposure to the character. I enjoy the hell outta her so far.

I love Carol, but DeConnick's decision to wipe out her memories (presumably so she doesn't have to address the things that make Carol, well, Carol) pissed me off, so I'm currently boycotting this. :monster:

To me, what makes her such an awesome and inspiring chracter is that she does have all that baggage, but she still decided, "You know what, I'm going to be a fucking superhero."

Geez Tres, what DON'T you boycott besides Silver Surfer? :monster:

jkjk

Joking aside, I follow DeConnick on various social media. She seems very much in promotion of empowerment for women, so I can't imagine she did it for the reasons you claim. Perhaps she was setting Carol up to have a clean break just in case Marvel gave the series the axe?

I'm sure one day she'll eventually have all of her memories back. This isn't even the first time Carol has lost them, anyway. :monster:

It was all part of the climax in that first arc before Marvel decided that Captain Marvel needed to go back to #1 after only like 17 issues for some reason. There needed to be a lot at stake for Carol in that arc. DeConnick couldn't very well kill her, so the idea that she may lose her memory, effectively dying without actually dying, was something that could have the desired impact.

I have faith in DeConnick. You never know, she may have something big planned. Carol relearning all of the things she originally forgot could be good character exploration for the new generation of fans that may not have read all of the old stuff.

Side note:

Someone made a Tumblr dedicated to Carol's cat.

So I just read #9 and it was a fun issue. It was pretty much a rock opera in which Carol, her friend Tic, and a rockstar named Lila Cheney (I think Lila has been in other Marvel comics before but I'm not sure...) go to a world where everyone talks in rhyme and they have to save a prince from marrying an evil woman who wants to be queen.

Because gender roles are switched and men have no choice.

David Bowie references abound.

Lila is a mutant who can teleport great distances -- and only great distances -- and pops up in the X-books once every few years. :monster:

It's hard for me to make in-depth comment in these threads from my phone, so here's Carol being a badass with her BFF Jessica Drew.

Not yet, but she still struggles with it. In a previous issue Lila got on her case for being a stalker because Carol told Lila she had read her file. Carol got defensive and said it was because of her memory loss. It's definitely not something that is just going to be forgotten and swept under the rug. I almost posted a pic of it but I didn't want to stir the pot. :monster:

tl;dr Don't worry about it and enjoy the comic. :P

The Christmas one did get kind of weird, but it was still kind fun.

And in the most recent issue

So, I've not been able to get clear details about issue #14 (Chapter 11 of "The Black Vortex"), and I still refuse to buy an issue 'cause of that memory thing. Does anyone know what goes down with Mr. Knife and Thane? Could the Black Vortex restore Carol's memory?

Tennyo

Higher Further Faster
I bought the issue but haven't read it yet because it was a tie in to a story I know nothing about. I flipped through it a tiny bit. I'll read it later and let you know.

Also, you need to get over the memory thing, man. :monster:

Tennyo

One More Day is so much worse though. Carol's memory could get easily come back, and it doesn't change anything in her past.

True enough. Still don't know why this was done in the first place, though.

So, side question: Do you buy physical copies or are you digital only like X?

Extra aside: Let me know if you need/want info on "The Black Vortex" storyline up to this point.

Tennyo

Higher Further Faster
I should probably be digital only.

In fact, if I were a responsible adult I would just wait the extra six months to read everything on the unlimited app. :P

And yeah, could you catch me up on the Black Vortex?

I read the issue. I'll type it all out when I get home later.
The gist of the story up to now is that the Black Vortex is an artifact the Celestials gave to a peaceful alien civilization called the Viscardi billions of years ago. The Celestial who observed them said nothing to them, but responded to their failed aspirations to reach space -- and a request from one of them for help doing so -- by creating the artifact, which imbues whoever submits to it with incredible cosmic power.

Within a year, the Viscardi had destroyed their own race with infighting after acquiring the power of the Black Vortex. Gara, the only one still alive, is also the one who requested the Celestial's help. She doesn't understand why this has happened, and demands answers from the Celestial, who leaves without reply.

In the present, Star-Lord's dick of a father, J'Son of Spartax, is the intergalactic gangster known as Mister Knife. He's been working with Thane, the Earthborn Inhuman son of Thanos, to acquire the Black Vortex and achieve all their goals.

Peter and Kitty (who have been dating) sneak aboard his ship, where they witness Mister Knife cosmically enhance his Slaughter Lords and prepare to do the same for Thane. Kitty and Peter jump in before Thane can get his upgrade, and phase out with the artifact.

Mister Knife sends the Slaughter Lords after them, and both Peter and Kitty call their respective teams for help. Both the Guardians (including Captain Marvel) and the X-Men show up, the X-Men consisting of members from both teams (Storm, Beast, Magik, O5 Beast, O5 Angel, O5 Jean, O5 Iceman and X-23).

The two teams convene on Spartax and debate what should be done with the Black Vortex. Some want to use its power to stop the villains, others want it destroyed, unwilling to risk another situation like the Phoenix Five.

The Slaughter Lords show up to kill them all before a decision can be made. Star-Lord sends out a call for more help, but Gamora ends up submitting to the Black Vortex for the power to fight these villains off. Soon, the present day Beast does the same. Nova (Sam Alexander) shows up to help while O5 Angel submits to the Vortex as well.

Those now imbued with the Vortex's power speak distantly, as though warped, and try talking the other X-Men and Guardians into submitting to the relic.

The Black Vortex ends up stolen by Ronan the Accuser, who arrives unexpectedly with a powerful Kree force, and who then takes the artifact back to Hala, the Kree homeworld, where the Supreme Intelligence declares that no one will be allowed to use the Vortex again. The three X-Men and Guardians now with cosmic powers launch an attack on Hala, killing an untold number of people.

Meanwhile, some of those heroes not under the Vortex's sway try to convince the Supreme Intelligence to let them take the Vortex, but end up having to steal it. O5 Cyclops and his father, Corsair, have met up with the teams by now and are ready to help too, though the Slaughter Lords capture O5 Cyclops, Groot and O5 Iceman.

Mister Knife rains missiles down on Hala, which allows the heroes' theft of the Black Vortex to work out -- but he's obviously not doing it for that purpose. Nova is able to get the artifact offworld and evade the Slaughter Lords for a while, but Hala is destroyed and the Supreme Intelligence killed along with most of the planet's population.

The Vortex ends up back in Mister Knife's possession and Thane gets his upgrade. He then uses his power to encase things in amber by doing it to the whole planet of Spartax, including to Corsair. Kitty escapes thanks to her phasing ability.

Mister Knife has also been working with the Brood, who plan to burrow through the amber around the Spartoi people and implant their eggs.

Onboard Mister Knife's ship, O5 Cyclops, Groot and O5 Iceman break free and find the Vortex. Deciding that the only way to escape is to accept its power, they do so, but are seemingly able to avoid going nuts because they went into it with a little more awareness of what they were doing and why they were doing so.

As all this has been going on, the older Beast realizes -- thanks to his new cosmic awareness -- just how much he fucked up space-time by bringing the O5 X-Men to the present. The other heroes are able to talk reason into him, Gamora and O5 Angel, who agree to help fight the bad guys.

And I think that more or less takes us up to where we are in the present, with Carol trying to keep the Vortex away from Mister Knife and Thane.
Okay so I suddenly can't find my copy, so I will go off memory the best I can.

Basically, most of this issue was Carol trying to keep the vortex away from everyone else. She ends up crashing on a large space whale where J'son surrounds her with multiple copies of himself and tries to shoot her. She dives behind the vortex for cover, and it is activated. She sees her "ultimate self" or whatever and almost submits to it, especially since she's pretty outgunned. However, she decides she doesn't need the power-up in order to kick J'son's ass (and promptly tells him this after the fact) and decides to opt out of submitting to the vortex.

Thane shows up, J'son tells him to kill Carol. Carol tries reasoning with Thane, telling him that J'son can't be trusted and is only in it for himself, blah blah.

Then this other random dude pops up out of nowhere and starts analyzing the situation, trying to help Thane discern who can be trusted. He comes to the conclusion that neither Carol nor J'son can be trusted, and tells Thane to encase them both in Amber and sort it out later. I'm assuming this dude was a figment of Thane's imagination because Carol asks Thane who he is talking to.

Anyway, Gara shows up before all this can happen. She tells J'son that she is there to save them. J'son tells her to piss off because he doesn't need her help and she then punches him into space for being stupid.

It ends with Carol taking off with the vortex being pursued by Gara. Apparently Kitty has a plan to save Spartax but needs the vortex to do it, so Carol basically just needs to outrun Gara.

I can't remember what happened to Thane.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna go watch Daredevil. :monster:
