We've got our first look at Hellboy, and he definitely looks the part. Here's to hoping that the adaptation delivers.

Actor is David Harbour, most recently / probably best known for his role as the cop in Stranger Things. No Del Toro though, so it'll probably be shit :monster:

DO NOT WANT.

The Shape of Water, on the other hand....

I'm fucking annoyed by these bizarre Hollywood decisions. No Hellboy 3 but they'll reboot it despite the first two being absolutely fine and enjoyable and not all that old? I just can't see the point in rebooting a recent film.
Plus the cunt who implied my dad fucked my nan on Facebook annoyed me for some reason. Where did I put my 'Welcome to the Internet' sign?

I get where your coming from, but I also get where the studio is coming from.

Not only is GDT an expensive film maker he isn't a solid brand name. He's a coin flip, yes he has some of the best movies made in the last god knows how many years under his belt, he also has some pretty underwhelming box office performances under his belt (even though those films were great as well).

Heck when you got people like Scorcese struggling to get movies made you know something is inherently wrong in Hollywood right now. It's very very by the numbers. It sort of reminds me of that scene in Fight Club when the Narrator explains whether or not there is a call back for a car etc.

That long winded point is going somewhere I promise. So with GDT being an expensive coin flip , and Super Hero movies (especially ones that require extensive make up and CGI work) being expensive , and considering the million and one movies GDT is working on currently it's understandable why there would be a reboot.

Do you want them to continue the story GDT was telling without him working on it or continue from scratch?

Not to mention this all before we also consider how many projects GDT straight up just doesn't finish. Simply put waiting on him to do Hellboy 3 would take years and would be expensive as all hell. And beyond that we also have to consider the other part of the equation, Hellboy not only isn't "Insert Marvel here", his brand doesn't have the same reach and his name potentially immediately turns off portions of the demographic they are gunning for (kids with uptight parents in the bible belt who are ok with Captain Murica).
It's a tough freaking sale to both make Hellboy and keep GDT onboard with his less than consistent track record both in regard to box office and well... ability to see projects through.

That said the guy they picked up for the role is excellent in Stranger Things, and while I was apprehensive when they announced him for the role some time back I have to admit with the make up on he looks exactly like Ron Pearlman lol.

At least they got the look right and they got a good actor in the role. Now we wait for more info. In so far I think it's pretty premature to write this movie off just yet. It has promise, even if that means we don't get to see GDT's vision for the universe realized.

I personally hated the Hellboy films as Hellboy adaptations. The first one was...decent enough on its own terms, but it ripped the heart out of Hellboy as a person.

He's very direct, yeah, but he's savvy and sensible and kind, and at fifty goddamn years old the BPRD treated him as an adult agent with self-recognizance, thanks, not a thing to be locked in a vault and placated. Brutenholm wouldn't have stood for that shit.

Hellboy is a detective noir superhero who fights gothic monsters. Mostly by punching but also by way of 'huge gun' and sometimes 'mythological and theological expertise.' He's pretty well-read. He's regularly isolated by the fact that his life is insane and people die a lot, but he loves people and makes friends all the time, and they don't even have to be human.

Hellboy plays cards with ghosts and tells them the story of the time he beat a gambling vampire puppet by accidentally getting a straight flush in the middle of combat. Hellboy finds an abandoned house in a mythical Russian hellscape to which he's been banished and deduces there's a domovoi in the stove, talks it out, and then they have a cheery fire and gossip. And not infrequently he notices somebody isn't human but doesn't say anything because it isn't his business, if they aren't hurting anybody. But if it turns out they are he gets so mad. (Mad rarely makes him fight stupid, but it does mess with his judgment about whether it's smart to start a fight in the first place. 'And I was so mad, I thought, why not fight a whole army of skeletons?') He's gruff and informal but rarely actually rude unless you're either his enemy or obviously trying to manipulate him.

Hellboy completely understands that he is the antichrist, and punches the fact in the face as often as possible. Because he will not be coerced and he will not hurt innocent people. Protecting people is why he gets up in the morning, along with the little things like pancakes. He does not have a secret identity.

I mean, lmao, in the first case we ever see him take in the comics, he knocks on a door and is like 'Hello ma'am I'm Agent Hellboy and this is my partner Dr. Abraham Sapien.'

Abe's in a fake beard and big glasses, but Hellboy's just in his coat, no attempt at disguise. Old lady is like, 'Oh, come in Mr. Boy.' (She is in fact in league with the thing that recently killed Hellboy's dad by way of frogs, and also dies of frogs, because her sons have been turned into frog monsters. This is a very Lovecraftian universe.)

The second movie was gorgeous, Mignola's art style would make terrible films, but the plot was a hot mess and this time it was Abe getting a poorly-thought-out romance apparently on the grounds that you can't have a female character be significant without her being wrapped up in an embarrassing romantic subplot. I think del Toro made the wrong decisions about where to be artsy and where to Hollywood it up for this franchise.

I love del Toro's work in general, and I adore his visuals, and whoever he had doing fight choreography for The Golden Army was wow, but the writing and character development choices for those movies were painful, and I'm cautiously excited that a reboot means they'll do my boy justice this time. Or they may fall flat on their faces. Who knows?

I don't really mind a broadening of the interpretation of a particular franchise, as long as the product is good. If the source material hasn't been adapted accurately, that simply means there is room for this to be done in the future.

That doesn't mean much. Even a good story can save films with poor acting (see: Original Star Wars trilogy :P)... (or in Jojovich's case, the Fifth Element, which is an awesome film :watchingu:).

True, but doesn't mean I'm going to enjoy her being in the film in the slightest. What work has she gotten in the past 10-15 years that hasn't been for her husband?

^ I read that and thought you meant Helena Bonham Carter. :monster:

I'm warming to the idea of a reboot now I know who's directing and that they're gunning for an 'R' rating. Gabe that commentary was valid as fuck, Hollywood is in a weird place right now.

Im with Channy. It looks like he has no teeth, i vastly prefer the samurai knot over his stringy hair, and i dunno if its the prosthetics or what, but it looks like he has very little facial movement.

I'll wait for more footage, but as of now, Pearlman seems much more natural in the role.

P.s. A weird lil nitpick, but I dont really like his coat either.

P.p.s. Yeah, rewatching, his forehead prosthetic is just a hat. I doubt he could raise an eyebrow. He's gonna be constantly looking annoyed
