Apparently the book is about two young adults called Evan and Kirie who were born in a town near the wasteland and open a private detective agency in Edge.
Some guy gets killed and they contact the Turks or something like that. Cloud and Tifa apparently make an appearance as well.
I'm totally doing to do something slightly useful at long last.

Reno and Rude. The universally loved Shinra Company is back!

2 years since that fateful day.
Evan and Kyrie are two young people among a group running a detective agency in Edge, a city that has sprung up in the wastelands.
Following these two, Reno and Rude from the Turks as well as the heroes from FFVII such as Cloud and Tifa return in a new story!

Well that doesn't look too safe.
Guys like him die for some real stupid reasons.
Remember when we used to be like that?
Hey, partner?

The young staff of the Mireille Detective Agency advertise their with a particular gimmick: "We Read the Lifestream"
During a certain case, they come into contact with the Shinra Company's Investigation Sector of the General Affairs Department, commonly known as the Turks.
A brand-new full-length novel focusing on the Turks, and they aim to restore the company in order to repay a debt to the world, and a group of young people living in a world in ruins.
The little bit of dialogue-seeming stuff looks like either Reno or Rude, but doesn't have the characteristic speak ticks to be Reno and seems kind of talkative for Rude. I'd say Rude (even if it's just in his head) if I had to.

Not that I have to, it might just be a bit of marketing copy that's not in the actual book :awesome:

Let's just hope that the reason the 'guy' died wasn't because he's the last remnant of an experimental clone army that Hojo accidentally left in the stationery cupboard. Unless, of course, he's Genesis.

The 'read the Lifestream' thing sounds like it might have some mileage, and could bring them into conflict with Cloud if he suspected they were treading on Aerith's spiritual toes.

Just to clear that up, according to this the guy (Evan, perhaps?) that's been talked about hasn't died. People who are like this guy die for stupid reasons, but this guy specifically isn't dead. It was just a general statement. I guess he was doing something that they thought was reckless and daft, and nearly got himself killed, which triggers this comment.

Oh good, it's a FULL LENGTH novel, I hate those half length ones... seriously what does that even mean?

Anyway, this sounds... okay maybe this isn't the best word but it sounds cute :monster:
I'm wondering if this is going to lead into the next compilation title?

I guess it means the same thing to novels that "feature length" means for movies.

I guess that makes sense... now I feel stupid... okay I'll say something really mind blowing to make myself feel smart.

You guys ready

Look at the title. Replace the word "TURKS" with "Extra terrestrials" and you get a completely different story :monster:

okay I'll stop it's not funny anymore...
But really, this sounds interesting. So interesting that I'm making a turks Sims 3 family. ... anyone know where I can find a Yazoo?

I guess it's to emphasize that it isn't just a novella, a la the On the Way to a Smile stories.
This.

The original iterations of OTWTAS were just Denzel and Tifa's chapters, and they were called '小説 (shousetsu)' which is a general word for novels, but obviously those aren't what we'd call novels. Same with Maiden.... [snip]. By calling it a full-length novel specifically ('長編小説' chouhen shousetsu), you're letting people know it's going to be something more substantial in size.

tl;dr = don't question my choice of words :sadpanda:

On the fence about new characters. It's good in a way because now they won't damage my lovelies anymore than they already have and, like Vivi said, I'll want Cloud dead all over again if this takes place post AC/C and he's still down in the dumps.

But, it's also a chance to show us some character growth. I kind of want it to be post AC/C. Pre AC/C Cloud and Tifa would probably just bug the hell out of me to the point where I'd rather they didn't make an appearance at all.

Still, Reno and Rude in their shenannigans. I AM EXCITE :D

I wasn't questioning your choice, I was questioning theirs :monster:

Do we know when in the Compilation this story takes place?

SUPER late to this conversation, but I, for one welcome our new characters and content.

It's nice to have some REAL news in the FFVII-story universe again, finally.

I don't think they've said anything about when it takes place, except it has to be post-original game in the AC/DC/OTWTAS era (because lolz, Edge is there).

re: to be honest I'd rather they made some new characters than making the old ones do everything all the time, because after a certain point that's crossing the line. Still want to see old characters, but "Cloud saves the world from Sephiroth for the 50th time", not so much.

Sephiroth never sleeps~ :awesome:

...so this is a full-length book? I certainly hope it's written better than Maiden because that's a long ass time to entertain us. Broken egg hearts :\

Don't get me wrong, I'm sick of Cloud vs Sephiroth too. What was sticking in my craw was the idea that a "biography*" about the Turks - who we don't really know that much about, would end up focusing on new characters instead. That would be just plain irritating. Especially if like has already been said, sacrifices are made to original characters and the story line to try and shoehorn in some 'important' new character.

Obviously this is all speculation now. I'm just hoping that these Evan and Kirie characters are well written, but not in a way that detracts from the Turks themselves.

It's just that SE retconning Genesis into the Nibelheim incident, it seems that nothing is sacred

EDIT
* I'm hoping that some of our Japanese speakers can help me out here. I know what lateral means, and what biography means, but I'm having a hard time getting my head around the concept of a "lateral biography"

I googled the phrase and this came up: http://enjoyjpn.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5&products_id=7732 Something to do with some manga I'm unfamiliar with. Is/are Lateral Biographys a common thing in Japanese manga? I'm just trying to get an idea of what it might actually mean.

Double EDIT:

I didn't get that at first but then I went and looked at Maiden and all I can say is fuuuuucking hell.

This is supposed to be a great news but why am I feeling indifferent? I would have loved myself some more Red XIII though but he was already featured on the OTWTAS so... :(

Here's to hoping this one will bode well.

(Aww I like Genesis)

It is possible that Lateral Biography might be similar to Gaidens (the wikipedia definition):
Gaiden (外伝?, pronounced [ɡaideɴ])[1] is a Japanese-language word meaning "side story" or "tale", used to refer to an anecdote or supplementary biography of a person. This use of gaiden is commonly used in popular Japanese fiction to refer to a spin-off (canonical or otherwise) of a previously published work that is neither officially considered a sequel nor a prequel. However, some gaiden are retold stories in the perspective of a different character, similar to that of a flashback.

Fuck it! I don't like Gacktenesis.

I don't like that he's so obsessed with "Loveless". Can't he drop that stupid book for a moment?

I don't like that he's in the Nibelheim Reactor. It was just supposed to be Sephiroth, dammit!

I don't like that he keeps on holding that pear and not taking a bite. Seriously, didn't it irritate you watching his pear-ful hand?

I don't like that he woke up at the end of DoC (not that I like DoC). Can't he just not rest in pieces?

I just don't like the guy. I attribute the inconsistencies of CC to his existence. Yeah, yeah... his fans can throw pears at me, I still don't like the guy.

EDIT: okay, I just realized this is totally irrelevant but what the hell. I'll just let this one stand.

It's by Nojima, so it's going to be a lot more plainly written (maybe overly so in the eyes of some) than Matsuyama's :awesome:

Lateral Biography: The books Japanese name is 'gaiden', so what Theozilla said :monster: Side-story about the Turks.

Ooooh. If Cloud and Tifa are in it this could mean big juicy things for the LTD!

I had this thought before reading your post. Just imagine the possibilities if this is set after AC or DC. We could have a Turk witnessing a C/T kiss. Or something even better like a baby. Wouldn't that be hilarious?

That sound you hear would be a certain segment of the fandom

Hey, I would love it if they cleaned up Before Crisis' stupidity. But they probably won't, and I'm not going to buy a 3DS anyway so I guess it doesn't matter.

I'm on it. *makes the frontpage update*

Edit: Done. I may have made a mistake or two, as I did this in haste (plus I'm fairly new to this thing of taking responsibility to publish news), so do point out anything that needs correcting.
