Nomura Comments on FF versus 13

This month’s newest issue of GameInformer features an interview with Tetsuya Nomura, director of Final Fantasy Versus XIII. While the interview was predominantly about the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 3D, Nomura did have some words for Versus fans eagerly anticipating more news about the title.

“We would like to ask for your patience on an official announcement for this title. It always takes time when tackling the challenge of doing something completely new, but we are doing our best to bring information to the fans as quickly as we can. Your patience is greatly appreciated.”

Originally announced in 2006 for Japan, Final Fantasy Versus XIII development is now underway by Square Enix’s 1st Production Department. It should be noted however, that the game was absent from Square Enix’s E3 2012 lineup via IGN.

This would make Tokyo Game Show 2012 the most likely venue for Square Enix to blow the lid off Versus information.

We would like to ask for you patience????? I think we've given you enough patience concerning this, would it kill them to be honest and go "yeah we fucked up somewhere and probably shouldn't have announced it 6 years ago when we don't know what the fuck we're doing"

Making an immersive, huge, epic game is nothing new. You just don't know how to do it efficiently. Get some help. Or cancel the project and move some workers and game design ideas over to other titles that are in the works. Bleh.

To be honest if Nomura said this months ago it just makes it even more facepalm worthy.

I'm actually pretty sure I read that quote as early as the announcement of XIII-2 - yes, I'm talking well over a year ago. I could be mistaken but I definitely remember reading the parts about asking the fans for patience and trying to do something new.

In fact, I'm positive that quote is really old now. Because I remember the site I read it on, someone commenting below it saying something along the lines of Nomura being all "shut up fans this is my baby". I'm going to try doing a search to see if I can find it any earlier, and I'll edit this post if I do.

EDIT: A google search showed me that every website with a part of the quote posted is around 1 day ago. So I'm more than likely wrong. I was so sure I'd read it before though.

In all fairness, the last time fans eagerly waited on the release of square's next big final fantasy; they gave us XIII.
Is anyone really surprised that they Probably had to start from scratch after hearing the feedback fans gave that game?

They must feel that after all the hype for this game, and the lack of signficant critical and financial success for their more recent games, they just can't afford to screw up on this one. Better to make us wait and wait and then give us an amazing game that will gobsmack all their critics, than make us wait and then give us something mediocre.

And honestly, if they can come out with something amazing, I don't mind waiting. I do have other stuff to get on with in the meantime.

I recall FF12 taking awhile. SE even had to start the production on that game over from scratch fixing the monsters AI and battle system. And they still managed to release that game in about 3-4 years. Yeah it took awhile, but at the same time they were actually giving us screen shots and info about what was happening and why they were taking so long.

I dont get why theres such a disconnect with this game. Im pretty sure there probably not even working on it

That's cool and all, but its been almost half the decade now for this game to come out. It's apparent that this game is doomed to either be shelved or be in development hell for another 2-4 years. Sometimes that cannot be good for the game itself, as seen with Duke Nukem. The love and vibe it had in 2006 will be lost or totally gone from the time this game actually gets released. I think the love and hype was satiated with XIII-2 and the Type-O that's coming out. I can no longer see this game as something worth waiting for.

I can barely remember a time when there was actual news about this game as opposed to news about possible future news.
